Did you have a dressing up box as a child?

When I was little, all my friends and I had a box or drawer in our rooms full of 'dressing up clothes'. These might be old evening skirts belonging to our mums, cut open so we could wear them like capes, or silly hats, strings of beads etc that we could use in our games of make believe. My mum was great at sewing and she also made garments that suited a whole range of characters. We were always going over to a friend's house to play dressing up.
Did you have a dressing up box? Those of you with kids, do your children have a dressing up box? its so important that children express their sense of make believe and excercise their imaginations. A dressing up box is a fantastic way to do this, and it can be very cheap to put together. It doesnt need to have 'official' costumes, just things that the children can use as props, their imagiantionw ill do the rest.

I absolutely had a dress-up box! Mine had old bridesmaid dresses, slips, hats, costume jewlery in it. I played dress up all the time. It's good for kids to stretch their brains that way. They need to use their imagination and role-play. Most of the things in my dress-up box were just old things my mother couldn't use or wear anymore. For instance, most bridesmaid dresses can never be worn again. Or an old slip that doesn't fit! Little girls love to wear grown-up clothes. Plus, this way, your little girl won't be tempted to play with your real clothes and mess them up. They have their own.

My mum's bridal veil ended up in ours. The thing we wore most though was a long red velvet evening skirt, that got turned into a cape. in that we were superheroes, royalty, you name it.

It's funny how kids can turn anything into a cape. I used to use a half-slip as a cape, lol!

I didn't when I was a child but my boys do. They get great use out of it and whenever we have theme days at school or it is Halloween or a theme party, they are usually able to pull something out of the box with very little need for anything extra.
I also think it is hilarious when one of them will come barelling downstairs in full battle regalia, for no reason at all.

Its great to see children using their imaginations rather than relying on tv to do all their thinking for them :)

I never had a dress up box, poor me. But my 7 year old has one, she looooves to play dress up. She gets home from school and changes her clothes right away. She loves to dress up like a princess most of all. She has all the disney character clothes plus many more. I love to watch her imagination wander it's so fun.

I used to love the dress-up box we had when I was younger. There weren't any costume things or even anything fancy, simply old clothes that mum and dad didn't wear anymore. But as a young child I loved wearing grown up clothes and role-play.
