The "Is pizza healthy?" debate:

United States

I have been thinking about this since yesterday when my Papa John's craving was finally satisfied. I know that pizza is thought of as an unhealthy food, but really it is just like any other food. Its all in how you prepare it. American pizza is VERY unhealthy for us, because they don't care about ingredient quality or MSG risks, things like that. $$$ is what counts to them. However, Italian style pizzas are much better for you. Made with olive oil and sundried tomatoes, eggplants and whatever other veggies with little meat and cheese on it. VERY healthy for you. So, yes pizza can be healthy for you. :)

We generally make our own which can be a lot better for you than buying it at the pizza place. But even then it is MODERATION. You can't sit there and eat the whole pizza just like you can't eat a lot of anything and expect it to be good for you! I LOVE pizza. Unfortunatly, I like it from the pizza place more than my own...lol

I quite agree, but Italian style tends to be single serving small rounds. Not the huge pizzas we get. lol. I too prefer the ones out at restaurants, but this was a much needed pizza. I been craving it since January. lol. It's the garlic butter, not the pizza....

You sound like my wife in your craving for pizza. I can not eat traditional pizza because I can not eat wheat so I make little pizzas on corn tortillas. But I am not always in agreement as to what is junk food. A lot of American Pizza is not that healthy especially when you considered that most people eat the pepperoni and cheese pizzas with no vegetables. But if you have it loaded with veggies instead of sausages you should have a nutritious meal. And of coarse if you make it yourself and use low fat cheese it makes it even a better choice. I never heard of using garlic butter on pizza as someone said but that is definitly a no-no if you are trying to be healthy. Try ordering your Papa John's Pizza loaded with vegetables and enjoy it.

I dont honestly know what differences there are of an american pizza to other pizzas in the world. But generally speaking, i think that it would depend on the ingredients put in the pizza that would determine if its healthy or not. If the toppings are more on bacons, then for me its would be very fatty. Vegetable or seafood pizzas for me are the healthiest since they are less fatty or oliy.

I'm not sure where you are from, but here we have cooking programs and they tend to show all kinds of foods. So that is how I know the comparison.

I agree. Our American version of pizza, the pizzas you get from restaurant chains, are really not all that great for your health. Some are better than others, depending on the toppings, but still not great. Italian style pizzas, yum, and much healthier! Unos Chicago Grill restaurants have some flatbread pizzas similar to this style, which taste really great and are much healthier than standard American pizza. I love the eggplant one!

The best pizza I ever had was at a small restaurant in the French Alps. The crust was whole grain and thin and light and crisp with olive oil and fresh tomatoes, basil, mushrooms, garlic, and cheese. It was delicious and healthy and has been the standard I hold nearly all pizza to ever since! LOL! The way I look at it, though, even the least healthy of pizza isn't all that bad for you. IN MODERATION, of course. Even pizza from American franchises, like Papa John's, can be a healthy choice, though. The trick is to get a thinner crust, and keep your toppings to lots of veggies, skip the garlic butter (maybe sprinkle garlic powder on it instead?), and only have a few slices. It's well balanced in terms of the food pyramid, at least, and I find focusing on that gets me further than worrying about how many carbs and how much saturated versus unsaturated fats there are in terms of good health. The hardest part is not over doing the portion sizes, but the occasional overindulgence (stress on occasional) doesn't hurt anyone. ;)

I don't really think it's all that unhealthy as part of a carefully controlled diet. As long as your getting your vegetables and fruit in the rest of your diet I don't see why not. I like a pizza about once a fortnight. I think the Italian ones are the best, they make them without having all the additives that the processed Pizza's contain to make the flavours stronger. Italian pizzeria's just use fresh herbs and spices. A vegetarian Pizza is my favourite.
