Are Horror Movies Scary Anymore?

April 10, 2007 5:52pm CST
I just watched the Exorcist on DVD and really enjoyed it but I have noticed that so called 'horror' movies are no longer scary. Recently I watched 'The Exorcim of Emily Rose' and although scary in places, it just didnt thrill me like films used to. I think too much money and time is put into special effects and the story really suffers. I would love a really scary movie but rarely get them. It's a shame. What do you think?

That was good although it was a strange mix of courtroom drama and horror!

I agree Citygirl..finding a TRULY good, edge of your seat, give you nightmares and afraid of the dark again movies are SO hard to come by...There are movies with gore etc in them but nothing SCARY....It sucks in a big way really cause I'm quite frankly sick and tired of these so called horror movies (that are rate PG13) that they've been coming out with the past few yrs...its depressing LOL

I agree. That is probably why the Exorcist still makes a impression with some people. And films such as the Omen and so on. I think maybe the makers of films such as 'Final Destination' try to make them gory so the kids (who are easily pleased!) will go. Where are the storylines I ask!

I agree. The horror movies aren't as scarry as what they use to be when I was a teenager. Or maybe I just don't get scared as easy as I use to.

They are. It's just that we've become desensitized to their effects. Think about it: if you had never seen The Exorcist, some of the modern films would pack more of a punch.

I haven't. I just find there is too much gore in them, so the story is weaker and the genuine frights are absent. That is why I liked the Sixth Sense, it was old fashioned scares rather then just relying on bloody make up and gory ways of killing people.

I've never met a movie that actually scared me. I think the key isn't even to be scary... it's to leave you on the edge of your seat. There's movies like that out there still I just think everyones got their own views on it.
