My partner says he is buying a boat - what would you do

I love my partner very much but he is a hare brain and although we usually end up neither losing or making money the nervous strain of his adventures is rather vast. His latest mad scheme is that he is going to buy a boat with 12 rooms. He is more than capable of refitting the rooms but he has no more idea of how to keep a boat afloat than the average submarine operator. He now says it was a wind up, but his friend is sending information to him over the internet about this wretched boat. So, is the friend carrying on the wind up on his own, or is the little horror up to new mischief? What do you think?

I think it's a brilliant idea, although I'm a big fan of boats and have worked in the industry for many years so I guess I would be. I would jump at the chance of doing something like this, although I can understand it could be a worry for you and if you don't like the sea all the worse. I have known people that have done up boats like these and one of them is round the carribean just at the moment! My idea of bliss if you ask me! I think with a little guidance you can put your mind to anything, however, if this is going to make you financially worse off then I do think it might be worth putting it on hold as anything to do with boats is 10 times more expensive than you think! I think like with most men this could be a pie in the sky plan, that he'll more than likely forget in a few days, especially when he finds out the cost of actually mooring the boats and just general maintainance work costs. Just humour him and perhaps get him to focus on other things like suggest a room needs redecorating or something lol! Good luck!

Well, I am GLAD you suffered. You are ruining my streeet cred. here. I was spitting feathers and all you can do is laugh. Oh, I must be a very frightening lady when I am on the war path, I don't think! Yes, revenge is sweet, and is a dish best served cold, so just you wait! He IS up to something anyway, there is a boat which has sunk and he is thinking of raising the darned thing as he can have it for free if he manages it! I think I preferred the 10 berth on a floating boat groan.

I would have to sink his battleship in no uncertain terms, stop his access to any cash quick! I truely hope this is a wind up if its going to cause you unhappiness. Let me know how you oget on, bless you!

I can imagine you did too. I'd go spare, let his friend spend his pennies but not yours, fine if it gives them an interest and keep them from under your feet as long as it's not costing you a fortune. I think boats van be quite expensive and to keep one that size rented out could dbecome a problem. Maybe you could turn it into a houseboat and go live in it, haha.

I did more than go spare! Trouble is, I know his so called wind ups and they always have a grain of truth. Also I would not put anything past him. He really is qualified and able in most construction, building and decorating fields and I always try to turn off any programmes about property development etc because the gleam in his eyes scares me! Naturally I welcome a project that would keep him and the rest of the relatives from under my feet, but inevitably there is a huge amount of paperwork in anything he undertakes. He gets the ideas, then Muggins does everything else!

Sink his battleships, I did more than that I called him up hill and down dale. I was absolutely livid. However, his little friend has a nest egg burning a hole in his pockets, so there is a real danger he really will buy something stoooopid to do up. We have lots to do already! If I thought we could actually finance a 10 berth ship I would back it like a shot, but I worked out things in my head and very quickly thought flippin 'eck!

hahahahahaha thats funny. you could give it back to him in telling him you did buy a big place for this boat and you want to have it there, because you think to open a hotel with restaurant. so he needs to learn cooking lol see what he says then

Well, Marlyse, I am glad you think all this is funny because I nearly threw a fit! and Gabs laughed her tiny little white Essex heels off. As to the hotel and restaurant I am afraid that would not frighten him as his parents had a chain of fish and chip shops and he is a master in the art of fast food. Sigh. I know where I did tell him to put his boat, but I can't print it on Mylot lolololol.

You are so funny Marlyse, I hope if you do stop over in UK before your epic move to New Zealand we do manage to meet up. I can't remember if I told you, I later found out that there really IS a boat, it is on the bottom of a shallow river, having sunk, the owner can not afford to have it raised but if Other Half can raise it he can have it. Now THAT worries me even more than a 10 berth boat, I can tell you!

When isn't he up to mischief! I am having a so called quiet day here today while he is out but he has made so much mess "reorganising" the rooms that I can not relax and just play on the computer, the horror! I bet he will come back with ideas about another property he has seen. When he has ideas about the pennies to buy it with, then we shall see! As to the boat, heaven help him. There really IS one boat which is at the bottom of a river . . .

i do not think there is nothing wrong with what he wants to do but the question is would he able to build the boat and after hes done would be able to get in the water without it sinking? if this is going to cause financial trouble then would tell him this is not the time to do this. if i am with someone and they want to do something i am 100% behind them but you also have to be reasonable at the same time. maybe he will get the information and realize this is not something that he can do but on the other hand he could do this and have a nice boat to take out on the water. sounds like this would be a big boat.

At the moment I want him to concentrate on the businesses he has and which have a very good chance of success, and maybe later get a boat, a SMALL one, if that is still what he wants. No way does he have time for a boat at this point, no way!

The only thing I can think of that would be advantage to you is fix it up and live in it as you like the beaches that would be so fun to have a house boat! Just make sure there are no holes in the bottom of it lol BUt a boat with all he has to do with redoing cars? Taking on more than he can chew huh?

Well, it would be fun to have a house boat but I would never get to use it, I would be too busy running the sites, and also it would be the equivalent of a Money Pit, I am absolutely certain. Yes, he has just bought another two cars, the little treasure. What I couldn't do with my sites with that cash! Sigh. Never mind, keeps him out of real mischief like trying to buy old castles - do not ask, was a nightmare!

Oh dear I think someone is up to mischief here so I think that you had best be careful of what your hubby will do with this boat and if it can make money for you two then it would be ok but just keep your eyes open so that nothing escapes you, but if it was my husband well he could make some money out of the boat here on Sydney waterways.

Well, maybe he could make money in Sydney but I reckon in the wet, windy and totally unpredictable UK it would be a huge loss. You are quite right about the mischief, if you scroll up you will see a partner in crime in that mischief. but he is up to something! I shall find out when it is too late. If he tries to dress it up as a birthday present for me I may very well do something rather violent! Then again, he can run very fast lol.
