Tell me about widgets!

I know Yahoo has them and that's how I first found out about them. But who has the best widgets and can you use widgets from a bunch of different sites or only one site? i.e. Only Yahoo widgets? I am trying to be better at managing my time and being organized and I think these would help if I could learn to use them more.

I love Yahoo widgets. You can do a quick search of their gallery and find one to do almost anything you like. I've got several I used for work that keep me organized and on top of things but I've also got some I play around with just for entertainment.

What is a widget? Is it a buzz word? Can you give me an example of a widget? I may be able to answer your question if I know what a widget is. I've been using yahoo for a while now but this is the first time I've come across a yahoo widget. I'm about to learn something new today. :o)
