As i walked in the campus on the way to class this afternoon, holding my umbrella,i started to count how many girls were doing the same thing as well.to say the least,90% of us use umbrella to protect ourselves from too much sunshine and UV.i know lots of you, especially ppl from western countrie,do enjoy sunshine rather than hiding from it.but have you ever thought about the negative result it might bring?such as skin disease.isnt it sensible to use umbrella?
maybe you use sun glasses and hat instead.just ur habit or they are more convenient?or only sunscreen?

There was a time when the parasol was mandatory for Southern ladies of good breeding. And in the south, you still occasionally see a woman using an umbrella for shade. But usually, they're different from the ones used for rain. Made of prettier fabric and frillier. It's considered old fashioned but it was a very popular thing about 100 years ago in the United States.

You also see lots of parasols in British films about the last century. I'd love to see the parasol return to fashion, and I think it will happen as the climate continues to warm up in some parts of the world.

in the UK they are mostly used by ladies who tend to dress in more victorian or edwardian inspired clothing.
you do get some strange looks carrying a parasol, but I get strange looks anyway.
fair to say it's more popular with goths, who quite often want to have lovely pale skin.

Hi, I come from Malayia, a tropical country. People here uses umbrella under the sun and rain quite commonly. You can actually feel the pain on ur skin if you walk under the sun at 1-3pm without a shade.
Anyway, i am the tanned type of girl. So, I don't like to carry umbrella. I will usually put sunscreen lotion if i remember.

I see few people use umbrellas on sunny days. Frankly using umbrellas on a sunny day is a girl think ( I think). I never see a guy show off his umbrella on a bright sunny day, because that just looks un-manly. Also its not just a Chinese thing, I seen a couple western ladies and south American ladies use an umbrella on a sunny day. It does seem to help keep out the harmful UV rays, but I it probably makes for sense to just use some UV blocking lotion or cream.

hi
u c i am an indian and we r brown skinned people. so if uwe dont use umbrella on sunny days our skin become all the more darker n finally we will become very dark. so we always use umbrella if we have one. so i dont think its just a chineese thing
and talking about western countries u see they r so fair that according to them the concept of beauty is 'tanned skin' so to have tan on their skin they prefer sun bathing or to say they love sunshine. yes they may wear sun glass to protect their eyes from the glare of the sun thats all n also how much sun they face their skin wont become as dark as ours, cause they r very fair. so they need not be afraid that they will turn dark. so they need not use umbrella.and in them those for eg girls who r that beauty consious may use sun screens thats all

I was born in Tahiti, a hot tropical island in French Polynesia. And after almost 14 years, we moved here in the Philippines. I must admit, as a western govern island, the use of an umbrella is only for rain. And I was surprised of people here in the Philippines who uses umbrellas for a sunny day. I found it weird at first. But as I got use to it, here is the other way around, you look stupid without an umbrella under a hot sunny day. I don't know why(^^,LOL) I think it really depends on the trends and upbringing of the country. But I don't use an umbrella sometimes. It feels good to have the warm of the sun on your skin, while my friends are running after shadows. (^^,)

living in a country with a tropical climate, i can say well enough that umbrellas aren't just for rainy days. its also very useful for sunny days! too much contact with sunlight especially during lunch time or afternoon is very harmful to the skin. you can even really feel that it wont do any good. as what they say, too much of something isn't good. =)

Hi, as a gal u must understand how precious your skin is particularly when u r in India or any tropical country. The sun in western countries is enjoyable indeed and so people there rather sensibly do not use umbrella.Like we here enjoy coolness of the water under shower on scorching sunny days, people in western countries enjoy the soothing touch of sun in their usually cold surrounding. And that's the reason,u must know, why sun bathing is a craze in those countries. The scorching
sun in our country appears intolerable only because of the reason that several delicate tissues just below the soft skin especially facial skin get injured if directly exposed to the sun rays. Only an umbrella can save u and certainly not sun glasses or hats.

No it's not a chinese thing. People here in the Philippines use umbrella when the sun is high in the sky to protect their skin from the UV rays also probably because they don't like feeling really hot as the weather nowadays are. My head aches a lot if ever I go out without using an umbrella to protect me from the sun's rays, I'm not sure why though.

I think I read something a few years back about Australians starting to use umbrellas in the summer because they have such a high rate of skin cancer there. I plan to start using one this summer, but I'm looking for something a little better looking than a plain umbrella. There are stores online that sell parasols, which are fancy umbrellas for the sun, but so far, I haven't found one I like, and they're usually pretty expensive.
I have health problems that get worse with the heat, and a hat just doesn't help me very much, so I'm going to try to keep the sun off my whole body instead of just my head.

No-one here uses an umbrella when it's sunny, just sunglasses. Most people here (even women) don't even wear hats to protect themselves, but I do. For the rest I just use sunscreen and I'm all good.
I think it's a great idea to use an umbrella (because then you've also automatically got some shade), but here it's considered old fashioned.

That is definitely an Asian thing! I'm Asian and grw up in an Asian country. When I was growing up, we didn't use any sunscreen or hats but we definitely used the umbrella A LOT. But living in western countries, I don't even own an umbrella now. When it's hot, I just slap on some sunscreen and wear a har. I do the same for my kid too. I tihnk it's just easier. Plus, it will look really odd if I'm the only one using an umbrella on a nice, sunny day. Growing up in the tropics, the sun, heat and humidity is more of a nuisance but in many countries, the sun is glorious and every time it comes out shining, everyone is out playing! As for me, I prefer hiding in the house! LOL!!

No, I think this is a girl thing. The ladies normally want to shield themselves from the sun. So this has nothing to do with the race. :P

I prefer using umbrella if the weather are so heat, and sunny. Sun is very dangerous for our skin right now, since the ozon layer are thinner every day. Using sunscreen also very important to avoid red skin and peeled off, well... that's hurt my skin.
Maybe in western country, they just feel only one week sunny day, so enjoy the sun is still ok. But in tropical country.. u will bored with heat and humidity.
