I came across this article when I was reading the news today and just thought I'd share it. Smoking in public places has been banned here in Ireland since 2004 and a study was done which has been published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. It says that pollution in Dublin pubs has dropped by 83% since the smoking ban was introduced and the health of bar workers has significantly improved. Well, we probably all knew that! But there's the evidence..:) http://www.rte.ie/aertel/115-01.html

I don't think smoking bans hurt bars and restaurants all that much. People aren't going to sit at home eating TV dinners because they can't smoke in their favorite restaurant. I personally used to avoid bars *because* of all the smoke. And people I know who are waitresses, bartenders, and musicians don't have a choice of not going to a restaurant or bar, becauseit's where they work. They used to have to breathe that stuff 8 or 12 hours a day.

I definitely prefer being in pubs now, it's great not to worry about all the cr@p you're inhaling.

I wonder if the owners of bars, restaurants, coffee shops, etc. have also noticed that their earnings/incomes/rceipts have also dropped!

Actually that's not the case. Many pubs etc have outside areas where people can smoke..:)

Well, I am not very surprised about that because second hand smoke does more damage. So, I think it is good that more places are doing that, people will be a lot healthier in the end.

That is fantastic! I really wish they would do that all over the world.

I am so glad to hear this! I hope that they ban it in our state. If smokers want to harm their lungs it doesn't give them the right to harm non-smokers. I personally feel like I can't breathe when I am eating somewhere and someone starts smoking. I don't know how people that have asthma can even be around smokers and be able to breathe. And as said above they are now saying that second hand smoke is really bad.
