I have purchased a new computer (hard drive, keyboard, mouse). I am in the process of getting my old computer ready to be taken away. In other words I am saving any documents that are on my hard drive onto diskette. I cannot save onto CD as my burners are not operating properly. They will not save.
I am having trouble saving some photographs on diskette. I am getting a "write error". Does anyone know what this means? How do I fix it? Do I need to save them on a website online somewhere? Is that my only option?
Also, what about all my favourites? Is there anyway I can "save" these? Can I save them on diskette or print them out? Or do I have to handwrite all the links down and input them one at a time when I hook up my new computer?
I am very nervous about this change and losing everything that is in here, not to mention using new programs (Windows XP, Microsoft Office 2003).
Does anyone have any advice?

Hi there patgalca, congratulations on ur new computer!
I know it can be nervewrecking when it comes to migrating files from one pc to another... been there, done that!
I was thinking that a better option would be to hook both pcs up to a network and then transfer the files from one pc to another.. but then again i dont know what setting you're in... but anyway...
When it comes to the pictures u cant save... are u sure the files arent too big for a diskette? Or maybe they're locked?
As for your favorites, u can go into C:\\Documents an Settings\YourUserName\ (well at least thats the path in XP (if you're using another operating system then the path should be a little different) and then copy the folder "Favorites" to your diskette and then save it in your user folder on your new pc...
Hope this was helpful... if you need anything just let me know!
And again, congrats on your new pc!!!

I'll check it out. I am actually with Windows 98 right now. I am changing over to XP. I have two options as far as hooking two computers up to one network to transfer... take them to Staples for a charge of $80 and be without a computer for at 48 hours, or see if my computer techie neighbour can do it in a day and risk that he charges me $60 an hour and doesn't take more than one hour to do it. Right now I'm trying to do all that I can by myself before I bring in the professionals. LOL!
How can the photos be locked? I have transferred photos to diskette before, and did manage to for some of them but the most important ones I cannot seem to transfer.
Thanks for your input.

If I may add, if you give or sell your old computer to someone you don't know, make sure that you wipe your hard drive to erase all important information that he can store, like credit card number, bank account, etc.
Just do a little search, there is tons of free software that can do that for you.

Personally if it was me i think to save sometime i would to yahoo or one of the others and save my pictures online , then put them in your new computer when you get it . Yahoo also has a place you can save your favorites.I am sure some of the others do as well.
I am a little nervous too my husband just bought me a computer with Vista on it . i go pick it up from where he is working on Friday. Here the pics and things are no problem because we already have 3 computers on a network.

Why are you taking so much pain of doing it manually one by one, which is both time consuming and troubleshooting. Have a look at www.acronis.com & download it's Acronis True Image & read how to use it. You can take back up of your hard disk entirely even if it fails to boot. I think this is easiest way to do all the data transfer from one machine to antother. Just search for any torrent site & download it & enjoy..

When I wanted to shift over some info from my old computer to new computer I had pretty much the same problem ..
I found the fastest way to swap over info was to copy and paste into a gmail 'compose email' page .. save it once all the info was loaded in (and with gmail you can store LOADSA info) ... then quickly swap computers and then I was able to simply download the info straight into the new computer .. I reckon I saved hours of 'mucking around' saving and storing stuff .. and I am sure any email server would work the same .. the info is as safe as houses (although I admit I didn't put any 'very sensitive' info into my email account just in case) ...
It's easy peasy and as fast as any other kind of method ...

Hello patgalca, in my opinion this problem might be cause by your floppy drive problem , or sometime even a new floppy disk also could cause the "write error". What is suggest is you might want to buy a thumb drive to save or backup your data.

The problem was the old diskette. I used a new one. I have now set up my new computer and we transferred the stuff from the disk onto the hard drive so after a whole lot of "freak outs" everything seems to be under control now. Thanks everyone for your help.

why don't you just network the two computers and copy all the stuff off your old computer straight onto your new computer?

Hi.
Photographs have big files so they cannot fit in one diskette as the size is overwhelming. you could try purchasing a USB flash disk where you can transfer all your files, buy the one that has a big memory. I have a USB flash disk/ drive that has a size of a normal hardisk or 40 gig.

I think that the best thing you can do, is get another hard drive from a friend or something, hook it up to the old computer and transfer all that you want to the new hard drive. A lot of time there are problems of not enough space in floppy, and images are taking a lot of space. You even have an easier solution, just go and buy a disc on key, and transfer everything you want to the disc on key.

Look at the side of the disk. There is a catch of sort. Just move it the other way...
