Why do people get tattoos?

Everywhere I go I see people with tattoos. I think that in most cases they are ugly. When I ask people why they get all their tattoos they say its to be different. How is it being different when just about everyone has them?...

Sidewinder6661 They are not attractive to everybody, and not everybody likes them, but they are becoming more and more popular and thankfully (in my opinion) more socially acceptable. I'm proud of my ink and wouldn't change any of it, and I plan on getting many more tattoos...
