i have check engine light on in my car ,how i could know the code of troubelshooting.(the car is Pontiac ,model 1995)

wvadennis I have a 2000 Volkswagen Beetle and have had a check engine light for more than 2 years...Volkswagen told me it would cost more than $600. to fix this. I asked what would happen if I didn't get it fixed. The reply was that someday it wouldn't start...2 years...
