Is it normal for a cat to growl like a dog?

My cat is strange. If you walk to close to her she growls. If you pet her at the wrong place she growls. I find this to be very strange. I have never before seen a cat that growls...Anybody out there have a cat that growls? Please...

RC_Stinger My cat is really big, and he "growls" when he is upset. But hes the only cat i've ever seen do that! Lol, but at least I know i'm not alone! RC
