Why do the Irish hate the English?

During our one week stay in Ireland, I noticed that the Irish does not seem to get along with the British. What is the reason that despite they are neighbors and talk the same language, there seems to be a hidden "animosity"...

SiamWarrior A lot of IRA members were both Catholic and Protestant so Religion was never a issue, the British goverment preferred to portray it that way.
