SimbaTheLion It doesn't take long at all, and that's just to get started off. Once you've got a reasonable amount to play with, it's much more flexible.

SimbaTheLion It helps if you have a large bulk of them. Irons can go for 25 each in bulk without too much trouble. You can even make a profit from steels from the shop, selling at around 40gp per in bulk.
