How to get someone to quit smoking? Do they get defensive?

My Dad has been smoking for many years. I remember a year back I was asking him if he would ever quit, etc, and it just made him angry. Whats some ways I can leave subtle hints or anyway I can make him at least think about it?

jake1234 simple tactics like destorying or sabotaging the cigarette packets he has will put him off it , if ure willing to do it for quite a while.. Like planting something awful in it, therefore he has to go out of his way to buy a new pack!.. so then do it again!!...
