Why would you pay that much when...

Tonight I was winning a bid on a laptop computer for my hubby when all of the sudden with 15 minutes to go it jumps from $600 to over $3000. I'm not complaining that I didn't win the auction but why would someone pay that much when you can go to best buy or www.bestbuy.com and get the same exact computer with a bag and a wireless mouse for only $594 plus tax? I just don't get it.
I'm wondering if the seller didn't have a buddy go in and jack the price up just so he could make more money. The laptop wasn't even worth that much. I doesn't make sense.
Has this happened to anyone else on here?

It could be someone was trying to jack up the price like you suggested, but that would be unethical and against ebay ruled. But then again, there are many unethical people on that site.
It might also be that someone got caught up in the bidding and just went crazy. Did you check the bid history?

Yes, it was me at 600 and then the next person was 2999.00. The last person to bid was at 3049.00

OK, you got me stumped. Like I said, maybe they just got caught up in the bidding. I did that once, was going back and forth for a dinner plate for my china set. I entered my bid and then thought what the heck am I doing? I just bid 20.00 for a dinner plate that usually goes for 5 - 10 dollars. Fortunately the other person bid again and I let him have it.

The price of a laptop computer being that high is ridiculous! Obviously for the seller, it was either worth it in value or someone may have run the bid up. Usually at the last minute people will bid and they already have a set bid.
Try to bid on items through the middle of the week when less people are online to cause the bid to rise that high. I have bid on items and lost them at the last minute because they bid much more than I would even consider bidding. I guess some people feel things are that valuable. I wouldn't have paid it either.

My guess is the buyer won't pay. I can't stand selling electronics on Ebay. Half of the winners never pay! If not more. I would go through BestBuy and get the one for $594 before buying a laptop on Ebay. I hate to say that, because I'm a fulltime Ebay Seller - but it's truly the way I feel.

Thanks for the heads up on that one. I will tell my hubby since he was the one that was wanting a new laptop.

It is true that it's against ebay TOs but it doesn't mean they can't do it. Yeah it's better if you just purchase it from bestbuy. Plus you would really know that you're buying what your money's worth.

It's never happened to me but it would bug me if it did. If I could buy the same thing at Best Buy for %584 then there is no way I would buy it on e-bay.

i don't get a bid on internet to buy anything,i think it is a cheat, the price in a very low at first a bid, when time go out ,the price will grow up quickly,i believe the seller have many friends to help him to give a high price, and make the price up.

This hadn't happened to me, but I've heard of it happening to others. People pay weird amounts for things on Ebay, and I've never been sure why. I mean, sometimes I'll pay more if it's something I can't easily get and really want, but for a computer?
I think someone was running a scam on the seller. I can't imagine even a seller who is cheating trying to bump up their bids that high.

I would venture to say that it was someone trying to run a scam on the seller. I have had this happen when I was selling a laptop. These people come in and bid really high on your laptop and once they win, then email with some sob story about how they are buying it for their relitive who is in Nigeria, and could you please mail it right away because they have to leave Nigeria soon. Then once you mail it, the go through PayPal to get a refund, which I am sad to say is extremely easy, and the seller is left with nothing.
It really sucks that people actually fall for this kind of stuff but it happens all the time.

This has happened to me before, it gets me upset.
About the seller having a buddy jack the price up, that is against Ebay TOS!
I thought ebay was for getting good products for cheap prices? Certainly not in this situation.

Having a buddy go in and bid (also known as "shill bidding") is against eBay rules and is cause to get someone's account suspended.
I have been a buyer and seller on eBay for nine years, and it's a "mysterious place," for lack of a better description... some people seem to get caught up in "auction fever," which seems to involve momentarily losing their mind and common sense, and being possessed by an "I must WIN!" compulsion. I haven't really seen it much in current commercial products like computers-- but I sold a vintage camera (highly collectible, I grant you) that involved four people in a last-minute bidding war to win it. The $1400+ closing price was about three times what I could have bought the same camera for at a second-hand camera store. As a seller of collectible items, I would say that I average selling at least TWO items a month for what I'd describe as a "stupid price." I have also been outbid as a buyer many times... and wondered just WHO would pay so much for an item.

yes yesterday in fact I was bidding on a camera I put in 16.99 and someone came in at the last minute and bid 60. now you can get it for 60 at a store without shipping but now they will have to pay more then what they would have to at the store. Not sure why people do that but I was wondering the samething if maybe its them or a friend trying to get the bids up more but why do it at the last minute?

It doesn't happen to me before. But what always bother me is, the seller often give a very low price, for example USD99.99 for T1 Sony Digital camera, but when u bid, there is a reserve value. If your bid is below the reserve value, the seller ain't going to sell to you. Well, as a buyer, if there is a reserve value, why do we have to place our bid...
It shouldn't name an auction tho.
However, wear the shoe as a seller, i'm glad that there is an option for reserve price, as having this, i won't lose money. Paying for reserve price is only US5 flat. Seller rather losing US5 rather than selling it lower than market value like USD30+

Pretty sure you hit the nail right on the head. He either had someone bid it up or he changed his mind about selling it to begin with.
I have a question how do you put a link in your post?

It is calle dshill bidding, personaly I think it happens ALOT! Some beg to differ. I have bid on something worth $65 bidding at $40 then in the last 5 min it jumps to some outrageuos fee. The seller doesn't want to get stuck selling the item for nothing I guess....it annoys me but what can we do about it.

I had this happen to me as a seller I was selling a xbox and a lot of extra and was watching it closely at the end. It was going for about $300 and in the last second it went to $700. It turned out to be a spamer. So from personal experience don't emeditaily (sp) think that it is the saler it could very well be a scammer.

I also buy and sel on ebay, and have had people get their itme then get their money back from paypal, first stateing their card was stolen then it wasnt, they even left great feedback before requesting a refund from paypal! i do have a laptop,i spent 6 months researching different laptops before buying one. its a 1300 dollar laptop, but i wouldnt have considered even looking for one on ebay. soemthings are worth the extra travel to buy.soem folks really do have trouble gettign out of the houseand would rather pay alot for things than go out to a store.others ,like me,live very far from town, and then all we have are soem touristy shops,a walmart, and several grocery stores. to actually get to mall is an hour and a half drive, one way!even then we cant always find the things we want, like sponge bob skates,or full metal alchemist merchandise,so i do look at ebay for hard ot find things. i also make alo of jewelr, and to buy beads, and silver wire,i would have to drive at least 2-3 hours to get to a store with a wide variety of beads,so 90 percent of my supplies i order online or buy off ebay.
