5 year old Child loses sight in one eye at SCHOOL!

At my son's school, two five year olds were playing with steel airplanes unattended. One five year old stabbed the other in the eye with the plane. The teacher puts a wet paper towel over the child's eye and tells him to go to the office. The nurse looks at the child and sends the child BACK to class! Two HOURS later they call the child's mother. TWO HOURS!!
She comes to pick up her son, takes him to the hospital and he has to be transferred to the childrens hospital for emergancy surgery!!! The airplane speared this childs eye and he has lost ALL sight in that eye!!!
Initally the mother was told that they were playing with PAPER airplanes not metal ones. They didn't tell her the truth until 3 days later.
Would you not be FURIOUS???? I mean I would of went to that school and probably ended up in jail! How could they be so negligent? This child has lost sight in that eye FOREVER and they were so irresponsible the way they handled it.
Now, I've been having some problems with my son being pushed down and kicked in the stomach by 5 other boys and noone seen anything...they are only 8-9 years old. Who is watching these kids??? Obviously NOONE!!!
I'm seriously thinking about jerking them out of school if something isn't done about this sort of thing. You expect your kids to be SAFE at school. But, they aren't. Noone ever sees or knows about anything. None of the teachers seem to care or pay attention. Your going to see me on the news if my kids get hurt badly because of their neglect!!!
How do you feel about this?

Accidents do happen, I would not be furious about that. I would be more furious that I was not told the truth. This is unexcusable. I would have been on them for lieing to me!!

I agree the whole situation was handled wrong. The parents should have been called immediately. The accident happened. It would not make me mad. The fact of the following actions is what would have sent me through the roof. I guess I wasn't clear enough sorry. I think the school and the teacher should be held accountable.

I got chills reading this. This is terrible! First off, why were these kids playing with metal airplanes?
And as you said, where are the teachers/supervisors at this school!! The nurse obviously is useless! I would be starting a huge scandal if this happened to my child. The teacher, the nurse, and the principal were all negligent! They did not even tell the parent the truth about what happened for 3 days!!! I can't get over this. I think I would be on the phone to my lawyers trying to get these individuals to claim some responsibility and to be dismissed from their jobs. Obviously, the teacher was allowing these kids to play with metal airplanes which is so dangerous! The nurse couldn't evaluate the situation properly and the principal didn't even call the parents when it happened. I would be very leary about sending my kids to that school.

The parent's are suing, that's how everyone found out about it, it's on the front page of the paper! And that was my question...Why were there metal airplanes in a kindergarten class? That's just a recipe for disaster! I just can't believe that they didn't call the parents right away! I mean this child's eye had to of been bleeding and red...it's an eye injury, I would of called an ambulance immediately!!

I was a preschool teacher and if anyone brought in metal airplanes, they would have been put in my drawer until they were given directly to the parents. I am so sick about hearing this! I know that as a teacher you can't see every incident, but come on~ the teacher had to have seen these kids playing with the airplanes.

Pisses me off!
I would make sure that school pays for what has happened.
You said your kids go to this school? Call the news station and make it public. The news would love to have this story. This is just sad. I can't believe they were so careless and waited 2 hrs? I would be pisssed!

If I was in your position I would take my child out of the school and either teach them at home or find another school. I wouldn't be able to trust teachers that let things like that happen to the children in the school.

that was bloody tragic.. hearing situations like these will make it harder for parents to entrust their children into school. the school is suppose to take care of the kids. that was a total neglect of their responsibility as an institution. i'm not a parent yet but i felt really FURIOUS!!!

Well first let me say there would be a massive lawsuit. 1 for it happening in the first place and 2 for lying. My son was bullied at the beginning of the year when we were in Chicago. Kids would pick on him and 1 boy in particular would trip him, throw things at him, take his stuff etc. Well the final straw was the boy kicked my son in between the legs. My son beat the crap out of him. When I talked to the teacher and the principal my son was the bad guy, he got suspended not the other boy even though he started it. It wasn't fair. The teacher said the boy was ADHD, which I don't think she was supposed to tell me that but still. If he cant behave in a normal class setting then he shouldn't be there. Luckily we have moved since then and my son has been doing much better. Stay on them even if you have to be there everyday. Encourage your son to tell you EVERYTIME it happens. Report it everytime and then if they dont do anything you go confront their parents. Maybe they are unaware of the problem with their child.

Thats a terrible case. Why would the school hide the real cause of a major accident which cause a 5-year old boy his eye? i think its also ridiculous that metal planes could be found in a 5-year old class and GOD know what other injurious things they might have been playing with.
I think the school should be sued for lacking the adequate attention which ought to have been giving to the kids and i fidn it cynical that they actually told the guy to go back to class after what seems like a terrible accident. Its awful as the guy would have to make use with one
eye due to negligence on the oart of the school authorities.
For the other part about your kids, i think you should follow the case up in their school and reach a reasonable conclusion with the principal of the school as regards the safety of every child in the school and to sanction the students who were involved in beating up your children

Whoa! That incident is not an accident! The school should be blamed for such an act. Where did the children saw the steel airplanes? Such things shouldn't be in the school premises. And why did the school didn't tell the truth to the mother. It's her right. Obviously the school should do something about this.

This is just terrible, i would have my kid out of that school in a heartbeat, to have them put your kids in that position and not give a damn one way or another is just too much, i just can't believe what people are acting like these days.
These are teachers, they chose this career, it's not like it makes a heck of a lot of money or anything, so they should be doing it for the love of children, not like what i've heard from a lot of teachers - they get a nice long summer work free - yeah that's the way to go about it...
Anyway, lying to the parents just makes it worse, i don't know, i would have to say take the kid out, especially if he's being kicked in the stomach, internal bleeding or damage of any kind isn't a good thing, and what if the school doesn't decide to call you because "Oh, it was only a stomach ache"
I don't know anymore, I'm home schooling my kids whenever/if ever we have any.

That is extreme NEGLECT of the school. Reading this made me cry because the child will never be able to see normally and that he/she will not be able to live a normal life for the REST of his/her life.
Its plainly NEGLECT and IRRESPONSIBILITY of the school, im so angry and furious about this. Its like at an early age a child to experience that PAIN. And another thing, they should have RUSHED him to the hospital or immediately call his MOTHER. Its really getting to me the anger for the school.
I hate the though of having a school like that. I hope the mother wins and that the school will closed.
For me at this point SORRY or APOLOGIES can DO NOTHING. Action is needed, the accident could have been avoided and more over prevented by having people watch the kids and also NOT Having STEEL airplanes around or sharp objects too.
Oh gee, im so furious about this. I love kids, for me they are very DEAR and FRAGILE. To know that these things happen.
Thats why i told my honey, when we have kids. i will take care of them. i dont like other people taking care of my kids. He agreed with me. Because for me its still is different the LOVE and CARE of the Mother to her child is MUCH MUCH greater.
I really hope and pray that the school will be CHARGED and CLOSED for that NEGLECT.

I think the school is to blame for that accident. That is quite ridiculous that they lied to the mother, if I were her I would be suing that school for not only the medical bills for for negligence (spell check).
As far as your son goes, I would be going and talking to the principal, if the principal isn't seeing to it that you son is taken care of properly then I would pull him from that school. Also let the school board know that you are not happy with what is going on.
I've been to see the principal several times now and my daughter is only in Pre-K. They know I mean business. My daugters teacher is awesome and takes great care of her its just other issues that have come up.

That is horrible, they should have called the parents immediately. I would be a holy terror if that was my child.
When my nephew was in school, he broke his ankle, he went to the nurse and she put a bandaid on it and sent him back to class. Since it happened in the morning, he walked around all day on a broken ankle. When he got home, he showed his mother and she immediately took him to the ER, because the bone was sticking out! I don't know he endured the pain all day. My sister, his mother was furious.

I would be so furious about this if it was my child. I wouldn't want my children going to that school especially by what you just said. That school would be paying for my kids doctors bills also. Prayers for the litle boy.

that is really horrible... no wonder many parents are considering home schooling their child at home to protect them... the school had to be sued for being so irresponsible and not doing their duties properly to protect the child... what is a metal airplane doing in the class anyway??? why the teacher allowed 5 years old children to play with it in the class unattended??? this is really outrageous and make me so mad to read the news... i feel for the boy who would lost his sight forever at such a young age... i hope justice will be done to the school and the teacher...

I don't think I can even put into words how this makes me feel! Horrified, disgusted, and furious just don't say quite enough!
I'm so glad these parents are suing! I think it's time for all of you parents to get together and try to find out what your options are before something else happens! Hmmm I know schools are funded depending on how many students they have enrolled so it's very important to them to get students so they get that money. Doesn't attendance count too? Maybe you could all have a massive walk out day in protest of what happened to this poor child where every single parent called their children in sick on one day! That's just one idea, don't stop there! I would definitely contact the media too and ROAST this school and the people directly involved! Sometimes you have to play hard ball to get results and your children are so worth it!!!

What a nightmare! This should be charged as CRIMINAL negligence. Schools, being government entities, have immunity so they are difficult to sue. Although, I do believe it's "qualified" immunity, and I do believe the teacher can be sued as an individual. I'm not the suing type, but heaven's sake! This is unbelievable!
I think teachers and other staff would pay more attention if they didn't have immunity. My oldest broke her collarbone in grade school, and the stupid nurse put peroxide on the scratch on her shoulder and told her to "stop whining" and sent her back to class. She sneaked to a payphone and called my husband who called me home from work. One look and I KNEW it was broke without the benefit of medical training. My poor child suffered for hours! They refused to pay any of the hospital bills, Xrays, etc., and I couldn't find a lawyer who would take a case against a school.
I'd try to contact that mother and tell her to call the news! Going public is the only way she'll get any help and MAYBE be able to prevent something like this in the future. What a horrible, horrible shame.
I'm praying for this little guy. How sad.

How awful for that little boy! I realize that accidents do happen and that sometimes kids get into trouble on their own accord, but as young as these boys are there should have been more supervision. I also can't believe they were allowed to play with metal airplanes. I would be very upset over having been lied to and not being called immediately! My thoughts and prayers will be with this family.
