Dollar Store or Full price?

I was at the store the other day and I heard some surprising stuff. Let me tell you. One woman was making such a big deal about buying something that was not brand name. She just couldn't buy the brand that cost a dollar which happened to be an off brand, in fact she said Dollar stores are full of crap and she never goes there. She says she would be so embarrassed to go there with her Mercedes Benz and she says the people would probably rob her.
First, of all she was saying this stuff to some stranger at the store and I happened to hear her as I was dong my shopping. Second, I was wondering why she felt so "embarrassed" to buy an off brand. Granting that she probably has a lot of money, why would it make her embarrassed? Is she scared that her friends will she the off brand at her house?
Therefore, I have some questions for you all: Do you think the dollar stores only have junk? Do you worry that your friends will make fun of you because you buy at the dollar store? Are you willing to pay full price at one store when the dollar store has it much cheaper. I will give you an example. A soap that I buy costs around 5 USD at many stores, but the dollar store has the same soap (it is name brand, not an off brand) and it costs 3 USD, so that is 2 USD in savings. I don't feel embarrassed going to these types of stores at all.
Okay, I can't wait to see your replies.

We have several stores here where I live and I absolutely love them and I find that they sell brand name thing too. I have purchased tang juice there, ivory soap, Barbie stickers and other things. My son also bought me 4 TravelChairs for mother's day from the one dollar store. These same stores retail at another store for $20 dollars each.

I certainly don't always have the money to buy name brand products, especially on the more expensive stuff. I'm a collge kid for crying out loud. I buy cheap wherever I can and I could care less what people think about me or that for that matter. Not everyone can afford to buy the most expsensive things possible and I think it's sad that woman had to go into a store with people looking to save a few extra dollars and complain. And to make the whole situation stranger, she automatically assumes that she'll get robbed if she goes there in her Benz! Just because people like saving money does not make them robbers. That woman seriously has some issues that she has to deal with. I'll go to any dollar store, in fact I love going to the dollar tree because everything is a dollar and you can really friend some nice stuff there if you're willing to shop around and really take your time to look through everything. I like saving money where I can and when I can.

Yea, I agree with you. If I can get something for a cheaper price and it is a comparable quality, then I think I am going to do that :). I love dollar tree as well, thanks for your reply.

I always look the newspaper circulars over to see if the things I buy brand name are on sale at the dollar stores first. There are somethings that the generic is just not as good as the brand name but I do look for it if it is cheaper else where. I will not buy clothes at the dollar stores as they just do not stand up to the vigorous washings my family puts them through. But there are many products that do measure up to brand names and for me its just a matter of experimentation.

Yea, it is always good to do comparison shopping. Some of their clothes are good, they have some good jeans that I like, some of their T-shirts I bought and I still have them after a few years. I guess you just have to inspect the quality and experiment like you were saying. Have a nice day.

The 99 cent store is one of my favorites. I will try an item to make sure it is as good as a name brand and if it is I will buy more.
I also have gotten name brand things there as well. Some snack foods, cookies and such are the same name brand there and 99 cents that the grocery stores sell at full price. More bang for the buck is a good thing!

I especially love their fig newton cookies and devil's food cookies, they are very yummy and low in fat and calories. It is a nice treat to eat them with a meal or as a small snack. Have a nice day.

When I was growing up, it was taboo to shop at K Mart or like stores. (those were the days before dollar stores and Walmart) I used to shop at TJ Maxx before it was popular. My sister and I would both get $500 USD to buy back to school clothes. My sister was a snob and only bought at Burdines. She got maybe 5 pants and shirts. I would go to TJ Maxx and buy "irregulars" and get 10-15 pairs of pants for the same amount of money. You have to check quality of things, but more expensive does not necessarily mean better. I don't shop a lot at Dollar Stores as in my small town there is only one "La Tiendacita" and it caters to mostly hispanic party items. Great if you're throwing a party, but not much else in the store. I shop mostly at Walmart and can't see spending top dollar for household items, etc when you can get the same thing for less money somewhere else. If that woman wants to keep her "riches" she better learn to be a little frugal unless she's a millionaire.

I remmeber the days when KMart and similar was not something you bought at. I was a Kmart kid though, my father worked there in security so we did a lot of shopping there. I knew many kids though who wouldn't and they may have had more expensive things but not always as good or as numerous.
I also agree about the comment that she might want to be a bit more frugal if she wants to stay rich.

Hm, hehehe, I remember that too, my aunt's ex-husband called his mother-in-law a "kmart hillbilly", hehehehe. Okay that was mean of what he said, but as you were saying, they have some good stuff there. Perhaps people just don't want to do it because of what their friends think. Yea, you are right because you have to check the quality before you buy it.

I go to the dollar store and I buy there. But I look at things really closely and check the quality. I sometimes just buy one and go home and try it and if it is ok I go back and buy more. I made good and bad experiments there so I watch it in order to save money and not waste it.

Yes, I do that as well. I buy one item and see if I like it. Many times they have some good items. I don't buy their nick knacks, I don't like stuff like that at all, but many of their toiletries are very good at the dollar store :)

Some stuff in dollar stores are just junk but if I need something and its an identical item at the dollar store hell ya I will go there over a regular store. I am not embarrassed abotu going to dollar stores and i do buy no name products so i dont' care what people think about that brand. Most of my friends shop at the dollar stores here in canada. It just makes sense to get your stuff for the best possible price.

Yea, plus there are five dollar stores near my house, so it makes it convenient to go there. Moreover, did you know some of the dollar stores accept coupons? That can be good especially if they carry the name brand products that you love. In fact, I have used coupons there before. For example, they carry St. Ive's and Dove products and those are two products that I love to use. Frequently, their products (name and off brands) are much cheaper than other stores. It helps especially if you are trying to spend money wisely. Have a wonderful day :)

I shop at quite a few different Dollar Stores here in Minnesota. As I love burning candles all day long it's the best value for candles. I also buy my puzzle books there as well as some smaller household items. I won't buy anything that I'd have to rely on for some time though from a Dollar Store as some items are pretty much junk. A lot of the items found there are also top brands but are what's called factory seconds. Like miscut pages of books. Things that are no longer made. Etc etc.

I love the dollar tree. I go there every chance I get. I find good deals there all the time. I don't think they carry junk at all. I don't care if it isn't name brand. Some people do feel embarrassed going there. I guess they think that people will look at them as poor, or close to poor. That is the furthest thing from the truth. Almost everyone I know goes in there, and I am not embarrassed at all to say I shop there. I could live in that store.

i love shoppint at the dollar store, they have alot of things name brand that cost 2 times more at a regular store, i usually go there for gift bags, party stuff. The only thing that i really don't buy from over there is the medicine they sell.I don't mind spending money on brand name medicine but if i can find something at the dollar store for cheaper believe i will be in line buying it

I go to the dollar store all the time. I think it is silly to worry about what other people think when shopping. I've found some very good non-name brand products that I like better then the name brand. I, also, use coupons, and I know that bugs people especially when they are behind me in the checkout line. But, I'm saving money.

I like the dollar store here. I'm not embarassed to shop there nor am i embarassed to tell others where i purchased something. I do think some of the stuff is junk or cheaply made but lots of it is quality stuff.
I'll buy spices and chips at the dollarstore but other foods seem to have an off taste to me. I love the candles and papers i can get there. My puppy loves the chew toys (if she wrecks them fast its not a 20 dollar toy)
I do find that i will buy towels and linens at a place like walmart..lesser cost than a dollar store and they last longer.

Hello, which dollar stores do you go to? I love buying name brand food there. One time they had Snackwell Lemon Cookies no sugar added for a dollar. Those things are around three dollars at the regular stores! I find that some of their stuff is junk, but a lot of it is good to buy. You just have to be a smart consumer, right?

I look at it this way. When a person cuts down these type of places, usually they are only try to make themselves look better than everyone else, and usually would not be ones I would spend my time of day with. These are probably the same ones that make Fun of everyone as well unless they are in their same boat Financially as well, and say the rest of the world is Lazy, and such.
But I Love Dollar stores. Not everything you find there is a Bargain, but you never know what you will find when you shop there, and some of the items make wonderful gifts for people on their Birthdays, etc. as well. We are buying a 2006 Subaru Forester and can be seen going in a Dollar store from time to time, and we are not ashamed. Hey when you can save some $$ in this day and age, I say go for it.

I love Dollar Stores and also stores like Dollar General and Walmart. I save so much money this way and really make my money go further. I'll tell people that I bought it there. I'm proud of the fact that I know how to get the most for my money.
That woman you mentioned is very foolish. She might have a mercedes beinz but you know what? If she continues to throw money out hand over fist she won't have it for long. By the sound of it she's a true snob, the type that has her nose so far up in the air that if it rained she'd drown. If she thinks the only ones who use dollar stores and the like will rob her then she needs a wake up call.
Yes you do need to check the quality of the items. Some of what they sell is junk but the majority of it isn't. I get some great deals and I'd rather give a store only a dollar then five; better my pocket then theirs.

You do have a point. Many of the generic's are made by name brand. They just come down the conveyor belt and some they slap on the name brand label or they put the generic. Same product you just pay for the name or not.

Well, I can't say about her because she may do things were she has residual income, but it just surprised me that she was so supportive of only having the name brand of something. Many times the name brand manufacture makes the off-brand. For example, if you recall the recall of Peter Pan Peanut Butter, Walmart Peanut Butter was also in the recall because Peter Pan makes their peanut butter :). Yes, it is always nice to not spend as much at those dollar stores.

Dollar store or Full price - I vote for dollar store.
In our country is this kind of shops called "bargain sale" and I like it very much. They arrive in your village, you needn't go to the town, you can browse on casses full of discounted goods for hours, shop assistant is usually very nice and helpful (and usually this shop assistant chooses all goods which you can see and buy there and so when he/she has even got a good taste...) - and I usually find some peace of wear made from such a material which I hadn't even seen in "stone-shops" for ages. And so I like any kind of sales. And when I know that somewhere is any kind of goods cheaper than in other shops, then I will go there and buy it - I have no problem with it. (But I come from post-communist country where distinctions between people weren't so big for tens of years, I must say. - My neighbours and relatives and many people here likes shop in the same way as me and neighbours and friends usually give each-other a piece of advice about where to shop and where you can find some quality goods for cheaper prices).
I have ansvered each of your questions I think and in the end I must say: I really do not feel embarassed shopping in these types of stores - I even tell my friends that I have bought this or that in sale - to buy quality goods cheeper is clever I think - And so why should I be so stupid and go to the most expensive shop?
- I shop there sometimes, too - when they are selling some kind of goods which you can't buy in any other shop and when I like it and need it, then I start to save money - but before I'll buy it there, I usually check the internet shops - doesn't anybody sell this for a discounted price?

Wow! Your response is very good, yea I agree with you, I love looking on the internet, for example at the store Palmer's Scar Serum is 10 USD for one bottle, I bought 3 bottles with eBay (and the came with free chap stick) for 21 USD (including shipping), it was a very good deal and it is helping my scar a lot. I think it would be interesting to see traveling shops like you are talking about, but we don't have anything like that in my city :(. Sorry about that.

There is no shame in shopping at the Dollar Store. In this economy, if anyone should be ashamed, it's Ms. Mercedes Benz. Puh-leeeze! She needs to get over her insecurities and face reality. Dollar Stores DO have a lot of junk, but they also have lot of quality items at a fraction of the price. Big Lots and Tuesday Morning are also great places to find bargains.

That lady has mad problems. Buying something cheap and using it, is not a disgrace. If I can find my pink dove at the dollar store. I will buy it, I sure will. If she wants to buy something expensive let her. It is her money that is being spent fast. It is sad to see the woman acting as if she is too good to buy something of a cheaper brand. You just continue to shop and never mind the stingy people. There is nothing wrong with shopping at a dollar store.

Wow...I love the pink dove as well (I've never seen it at the dollar store though). I know Sam's Club (probably Costo too?) has a pack of it 16 bars for just under twelve dollars. It's the best, right? It makes your skin so soft. Anyway, regarding that woman shopping after many people have commented I think she just lives in a "circle of friends" that buys only name brand. So when her "friends" come over they may make fun of her. Now maybe it's because she has lots of money or maybe it's her friends, but you are right many of the discounted brands (generic) are very good in comparison with the name brand.

It sounds like that woman has "rich b*tch" syndrome. (Please pardon my language, sorry.) I think it's very unwise to just throw your money away (because you have the means to do so) on frivolous things, not to mention throwing your money away on things you really need, just because it's a name brand. It infuriates me to no end when "richies" look down on us for being poor - like we *WANT* to be poor?! Granted, I agree with some of the respondants on here that some things require you to spend a little more money (better quality and durable), while other things of use allow you to be a little thrifty (doesn't need to be so durable.)
Example #1 (The 'grey' area) - purses, for instance; they need to be durable and last a while; however, you won't see me plunk down $2500 on a Prada bag just because it's Prada. I'd much rather go to Ross or TJ Maxx and find a leather purse that will be just as durable, and if it's a brand name, fine - even if it's a common brand name like Rosetti. (Rosetti happens to make excellent handbags, and prices are reasonable.
Example #2 (The things we can afford to be thrifty with) - household cleaning sponges and supplies. Sponges don't need to be all that durable; a couple of uses and you have to toss them or you'll be spreading bacteria around - that's with ANY sponge. (They harbor germs like you wouldn't believe!) I'm not going to rush out to the store and buy a 12 pack of BOUNTY sponges when I get get a 12 pack off-brand at the dollar store, and they'll last the couple of days that I need them. Same thing for cleaning supplies. Comet works the best; I get get a couple of cans at the Dollar Store for what *ONE* can costs me at the supermarket!
example #3 (Things that require a little more money, but for a good reason) - make-up. Yes, I will splurge for Clinique; their brand is comedogenic and good quality. I mean, we put this stuff on our face! Covergirl, in my opinion, will rot your face off. It used to be a good product, back in the day, but not now. I'd say that stopped in the mid 80's.
Even if I am to one day own a Mercedez... I'll still shop at the Dollar Store, and if my friends make fun of me for doing so, then they aren't my friends and I don't need them. I will never be ashamed of being smart with my money. You shouldn't be, either! :o)

Thanks for the through reply. You are right items like cleaning supplies are usually cheaper at the dollar store. I especially like their gneric version of Feabrees (spelling?) the fabric refresher. Well you know the name brand is well over four dollars, and dollar tree sells a generic brand for just one dollar. It pretty much works the same. There are some things that I like to spend a little more oney that would be lotion, soda, cologne, and clothes...hehehehe. Well I haven't heard about too much concerning makeup, but I even see dollar tree has that! I think I would go with a good brand because some of the stuff just isn't too good, right?
