I just went to an exhibit last march and I took a bone density test that they are offering for free. I found out that I need to drink milk or take supplements to increase my calcium intake. I'm not really a milk drinker because i'm lactose intolerant. Is it just ok to take supplements or should I really have to drink milk?

Hi, I also had a bone density test before, but mine was within normal range. I agree that we need to have sufficient calcium intake to avoid osteoporis to which we women are prone. I seldom drink milk, but when I do ( I force myself) it has to be non-fat. It is best to use calcium supplements if you are not fond of milk.

If you are lactose intolerant you certainly shouldn't be drinking milk. If you need to increase your calcium intake milk is a really bad way to do this anyway, as its high protein values almost negate any positivity gained in terms of calcium.
Eat more leafy greens and potatoes to get your calcium instead. They are far better sources and won't affect your body.

I don't like milk very much. I find it strangely unnatural that humans still drink milk --- milk from another animal --- after infancy (and we're the only animals that do that). Of course there are plenty of other unnatural things humans do, but that's besides the point. I don't drink milk plain, but I have the fat free, tasteless kind with my cereal.
I do drink soymilk, though, from soybeans. Delicious~! I don't know if it has calcium or vitamin D or whatever cow's milk has, but it tastes yummy.

If you are lactose intolerant aren't there drinks like Lactaid that have calcium? Also my friend who is lactose intolerant takes a little pill if she wants to have some dairy.

you can get calcium other ways then in milk. There is an orange juice that I made a mistake and bought for my husband that has as much calcium as milk. Can't remember the name brand but I was told not to get that one for him anymore. I haven't been shopping in a long time. Sorry I can't remember. Tums are another good source of calcium but if you take a vitamin with other things that you need then you can get more then just calcium. I love cold milk. Since I've gotten pregnant I go through 2 gallons in one week.
