As a writer, it is sickening and frustrating to see so many people here at mylot plagiarizing and infringing on copyright. You might think that it is ok to copy someone's article and try to pass it off as your own, but it is not.
Many writers make money from writing and when you copy one of their articles and paste it here as your own then you are now make money off their writing and that is theft. That is wrong! I don't know about any other writers here, but as a writer I mind if someone makes money off my content.
Mylot is becoming full of plagiarized content & the sad thing is some of you might not even realize that you are responding to a discussion that has been stolen. If you want to discuss an article you found online, post the link to the article. Don't steal it, seesh! Posting something without attribution is plagiarism. Making money off it is theft.
Quit stealing people! Stop! Just stop! I don't have all day to report stolen articles, but I will report every one I come across because it is wrong. Why should anyone make money here off of another authors writing.

Totally agree with ya! It's very unfair to the writer. Although some people may not realize it, we all know most do. I know I learned about Plagiarizing in like 8th grade or maybe even earlier.
I don't have time to police either, but I do report every one I have seen and there have been a number of them. All removed I might add.

I know, it annoys me too. And you usually find that these plagiarists can't back up their story because they havn't written a word of it.
I reckon htey should be named and shamed

Yes, stealing articles off the internet and posting it as your's is wrong. I agree! I think Mylot should do something about this because it's becoming a problem. Not only with articles, but responses are also being copied and pasted. It has happened to me just a few days ago. It was a new discussion that I started and I wrote a comment to one of my responses. Before I knew it, some user had copied that comment and pasted it on that same discussion that I've started. I spotted it immediately.

I agree 110%. There are proper ways to quote the work of others on the Internet, and I for one believe everyone should take the time to learn them. I know we're only talking about a few cents here on myLot, but other venues are also paying for people to write. they are not so lenient. These poeople don't seem to understand this is more than just a case of bad "netiquette. If a person is so inclined, they can sue or prosecutre someone who has plagiarized them, depending on their local laws.

Swtrose i know exactly what you are talking about and it is so very wrong. I believe what has bothered me the most is a couple of dicussions i have started one week to go on the next week and find one identical to it. And it is not just new users it is some that have been here for a long time. I do mine from the heart and from my own exeriences and to have that happed is maddening. I did not report it because that would most likely lead to making someone mad and doing something to ruin my reputation here and i dont want that either so i just carry one but it is so wrong and hurtful for someone to do that.

I have a great idea! I think mylot should hire you for your services of reckonizing plagiarism. Honestly, I am not sure I would reckonize it if I came across it. Maybe because I am not sure I would come across someone else's article twice. I do see that there are similarites in conversation at time but none exactly the same. I dont' think so anyway. Maybe it is newbies that don't read the rules they do that kind of thing. Or sure I guess some people could be just plain and simple very dishonest. I hope they are few and far between. Seriously though I think mylot needs you!
What do you think? You should ask them if they want to hire you! You obviously have an eye for this kind of thing.

I know what you are saying and I agree.
I always give a link to the real site of the artical if I found something that I want to write about.
Sometimes I will write about something that I saw on news or something, but I never claim it as mine. I always leave a link to the real site and I always let them know that I heard it on news or read it on AOL News.

So do I. According to swtrose's own set of rules in one response she says that is OK (see response # 4) Is'nt nice to know members have to get her permission before they post anything?

Great topic. You are 100% right Swtrose. I haven't had that happen but I have noticed it when I go threw the discussions topics. It is not fair that some mylotters plagiarize and infringe on others topics. Maybe those who plagiarixe and infringe on other people topics are not bright enough to come up with their own ideas. shame, shame, shame on those who do that.

Thank you so much for addressing this issue. I haven't been on Mylot for several months because of it and I decided to come on just last night to see how things have progressed. Not to my surprise, nothing has changed. I am an inspiring writer, but I have been so scared about posting anything of value here. I am even thinking of closing my account. Again, thank you and may you be blessed always.

You know, I really didn't think about that. I have posted some emails people have sent me and I have posted some devotionals from another site. It didn't even dawn on me that this is infringing on copywrite! I am sorry. I didn't even know I was doing it. I forget that we make money here. I really don't post enough to make any money to really speak of, but we are making some money.
You are right, Swtrose! Thank you for making me, and others, aware of that!

It's wrong when you don't quote the source. Then people compliment you on it but you don't bother to tell them that it's not your own work.

If mylot was capable then they would not have a report button now would they my dear and I would not have needed to report 15 articles and if you are plagiarizing you should be ashamed of yourself. It is stealing. Posting the first paragraph, first few sentences, or a quote from the article is fine, but posting the full article without permission from the writer is a copyright violation. Having just viewed your profile, you should not be here as almost all your post are infringing on copyright. You are making money from other people's writing. I only hope and pray my lotters have the common sense to report you. Having viewed your profile every one of your discussions are articles that you have copied. You would think a lady of your age would know better.

yes, i agree with you on having this problem. lately, i have been noticing that the discussions that i started have been started all over again by some other users! i really get sad when this happens because i feel that it is really a big rip off. why cant other mylotters just be original and not steal others' discussions. :(

Hi I am new to My Lot so I cannot comment if I saw anyone doing plagiarism. Whenever I try to re-arrange my own comments, like putting first sentence last, etc and try to copy/paste, it will not let me becuase there is a message coming up that I am not allowed to copy/paste. So if what you are saying is true and you've seen them, then these are people who had been here a long time. I and many other mylotters joined because this is a way you can let your ideas flow freely and find others with the same interest. I have seen that after I post my discussion, something of similar idea either have or has just come out from another individual. It makes me smile knowing the things that concern me or things I think about happen to be similar with others...meaning I am not alone.
It is illegal to plagiarize, plain and simple...so I think those folks should be banned. I am a member of a review forum and they have a "Hall of Shame" when they catch people copying articles to submit as review they catch them and then post their photos or Names on the list. ;/

Swtrose you are very right. Im not a writer myself but i think its wrong for people to do that. I have not came across any articles myself like that. I have seen people talking about articles but i have always seen the links. How do you report these anyways?

Who made you judge and jury of what is and what not is plagiarized? Many discussion are based on uncopywrighted articles and the link is given thereby making it obvious that the article was not claimed to be the words of the person posting the discussion. Read the myLot guidelines..and I copied and pasted this..linked to myLot guidelines: Make sure to post useful links in discussions when necessary to provide authoritative guidance or to refer to a third party article.

I am not sure of what you are referring to. I had sent mylot e-mails to spam until a day or two ago. I did not get notify on your post under me.Give me a link to it and I will be happy to answer you. I am not ashamed of the fact that I will report violations. I also go hunting the bulk of the repeated offenders. I stole a look at your threads and do not think I have reported you before although I have seen you around.

It doesn't matter as it was already deleted. I wasn't online when jokes got removed and wasn't aware of it when I posted. When you posted it was a violation I thought it had to do with the mature content. This discussion has helped me understand the reason for it though. :)

Are you really sure that someone just copy someone's article. How do you know that? having the same thought is completely natural, there are 6 billion people in this planet. Is there 6 billion different thoughts too? i don't think so. One day i wrote a discussion. Then an hours later, i realized that someone has the same discussion weeks ago. As soon as i noticed that i personally apologized to her. she forgive me and reminds me to search a discussion before write my on discussion

Well I'm afraid I cannot tell you who, but I can give you an example. If you were to copy this following article without the written permission of the author, you'd be infringing on her copyright. http://www.myinternetsafetycoach.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=18&Itemid=44

Well...I have a suggestion. MyLot must create a guidelines not to permit a copied article to be pasted into another name. Meaning MyLot should screen first if the article that will be pasted is almost similar to the previous one. And if someone pasted it she/he must then be blocked from MyLot and cannot post any article or will not be welcome anymore to be a member. What do you think?

oh..really..so we will be talking some kind of honesty here huh..honestly is all what it takes. if they ain't gonna stop so it will go back to them. do you believe in "karma" just let it be. or if they too don't believe it they must remember this golden rule, "DON'T DO UNTO OTHERS WHAT YOU DON'T WANT OTHERS WILL DO UNTO TO YOU" :)

For me, the whole issue of copyright and plagiarism is a touchy issue. The primary field I write in is just full of it. It has been going on a hundred years now, one writer copying another; at this point, it is tradition.
It does not help when you get someone who gets up on a soapbox, and declares that those who have knowledge of the subject should give their knowledge up without any benefit (profit). These people have no problem copying someone's articles and books. And they do it from the stand that if the writer was enlightened that they would give the material away, but because they don't that they are spiritually flawed.
Never mind the fact that my only real job skill is writing. I am supposed to be willing to give away hundreds of work for the liberation of the masses. It doesn't matter that it is my livlihood.
Of course, this brings me to my point. Yes, I have a point.
I have noticed that those who are touchy about copyrights, and cite their sources, have a stake in a copyright. That they make part of their living from intellectual properties, only those who are robbed (or have something to rob) care about their property value (copyrights are property--they can be sold and traded).
In the end, we can only conclude that those who steal another person's writing have nothing worthwhile to say themselves; otherwise, they too would be concerned about copyrights and people ripping them off.

Morgan,
What about emails? I have posted several emails I've received on here and a couple of them got deleted. Is that not allowed?
I have also posted some poems from other websites. I'm not sure if they got deleted or not, but I guess that would be under copyright too?

Emails fall under copyright law too.
In fact, many of my articles start off as emails. Because I (somehow) became an expert in my field, I receive emails asking me questions about that field. Quite often, I end up cleaning up and expanding my original replies into articles (I figure if one person had that question, then there are probably others wondering the same thing). Therefore, I am touchy about people copying my emails also.

Well i agree with u...but again u can do very less to prevent it..u cant put copyright on evey letter u write down..u shud probably just leave it to the guys moral...if he/she just wants to earn money by copy pasting..u know he/she has got no creativity n cant go farther..n i m sure he feels guilt at his heart..if he/she is soft hearted enough though...lol

She also owns the copyright on her reply to you.
You own the copyright to anything you write as soon as it is written down (with the exception of "work for hire").
