My computer froze yesterday

I was on the computer cleaning out emails and on mylots for a couple of hours yesterday morning. Then I set my browser window to an auto-surf site I use to advertise a couple of web pages. Later in the afternoon, hubby tried to use the computer. There was a new program/file on the computer called WinAntivirusPro2007 that would pop up on start up and then the computer totally froze. I couldn't do a diagnostic, I couldn't do a start, uninstall, I couldn't do anything! ARGH! In talking to my son tonight, he recommended starting the computer in safe mode and then seeing if I could uninstall the weird program. It worked! I then ran our virus scan and found 2 viruses...one it quarantined, one was a malware with very low threat. The computer is still feeling sluggish, but I can actually use it now! What a trip! Thought for sure we were going to have to take it to the shop!

Glad you can use the computer again. But there is also the fact that autosurfs can somtimes freeze your computer because the sites dispalyed are trying to open something or break the autosurf.

It is a big deal when our computers are incapacitated for any reason. I would hope that you know about where you got that virus and avoid them in the future. Avast antivirus has done well by me and am glad it catches things as I am working. Get rid of the malware if you can. Defrag also. Am glad you avoided the trip to the repair shop. Good luck in the future in your computing.

Another thing I've noticed is that I'm getting tons of pop ups every few minutes and my pop up blocker is on the maximum! It's driving me nuts!

I had my computer infected a month back and it was a trojan attack. Although I managed to clean it up after days of effort, I did re-install the Operating System, just to be careful. Try to protect your computer and use a non-admin account for normal internet usage.

i remember months back when my computer was also attacked by a trojan virus. my brother fixed it for me, too. but it took many hours to re install the operating system and my brother was annoyed since it always happens to my computer. hehe.

Yup, you always run your pc on safe mode. It really helps. Btw, which anti virus software are you using anyway? It should've blocked "WinAnti..." software automatically. I think you should change over to some other Anti virus software if you were using one or else get an anti virus software. And ya...do the auto-surf sites help? I mean do they pay off well? If so, could you please let me know off some! Thanks !

i am not much good when it comes to computers and i say, my computer froze many times, too... and mostly because of those pop ups. and so, my brother blocked pop ups. so, not much incidents like that now. but still, there are times when my computer froze and i don't know why and one thing's for sure, it's so irritating especially when you are doing something important.

I discovered that there was a problem with my broadband connection earlier. It will take 24 hours for the company to fix it. Right now, I'm on dial up. I'm working like a turtle here. Imagine my frustration when I need to wait for a minute to load up a new page here. Its a good thing you have a good antivirus installed in your PC. I'm currently using Trend Micro from Zone Alarm and I like it.

Mine wouldn't print anything and then froze. WHen i tried to reboot it it wouldn't reboot. I tured it off for few hours and then tried again. Voila!! It restarted. Not sure what the problem is but it happens quite often. Glad you didn't have to take yours in! I can't live without my computer!

these creepy adwares and spywares come into our computers through some auto surf programs. just to be sure that you have blocked pop-ups coming out.i had gone through this and the main cause were the viruses attacks. i had no choice but have it re formatted by a computer technician and had nod32 antivirus system installed in my pc. since then everything went on smoothly without experiencing the same.

Sorry you had to go through all that. It's good that you were able to find those viruses. That's why I don't trust autosurf sites or anything where you have to download anything. There are too many viruses and spyware out there. Good luck with your computer.

Virus are a creepy thing indeed! In the past I have tried several free antivirus solutions. Some have mentioned avast (which I recommend). I'm not sure if anyone mentioned AVG antivirus (I'm not sure if this one is still free). Linux also has a free antivirus solution that is being used by big corporate offices! Search for ClamAV... they have a windows version. This software is what turned me on to using a linux distribution (Ubuntu) which is FREE! Let me know if you have any further questions and I'll be glad to help!

I am glad to hear that it wasn't more serious than that. I have had to have my computer reformatted over some virus I picked up.
