Should pedophiles convicted of a second offense be given the death penalty?

It's long been theorized that pedophiles cannot be rehabilitated. Yet pedophiles are freed and are allowed to go about their lives, with every likelihood of committing another crime against a child. If a pedophile commits another offense and is convicted, should there be an automatic sentence of the death penalty or life behind bars without the possibility of parole? What are your views?

I reckon they should serve life behind bars. Or be sent to a prison island. It is a shame these people can't be rehabilitated. My friend who has had to study poadophilia for his degree told me that sometimes these people don't even realise they are doing wrong. He said there is much evidence to prove this in the case of Michael Jackson. If it is true that he is a paodophile, traumatic circumstances in childhood may have caused him to keep the same mind as a child, never growing up, and still feeling attracted to yound people. Although these people are sick individuals by our standards, they don't always understand this, and so cannot be rehabilitated. But I don't think we should devalue their lives so much to kill them, althouhg some of them are just evil, which is hard to distinguish between. And people must be kept out of harms way, and so maybe they should be sent to somewhere where they can't leave but they can work and live all together away from normal society.

People all over the world are exposed to trauma and rise above it. People who are molested don't necessarily go on to molest their own kids. People who are abused don't necessarily go on to abuse their own kids. One can rise above their circumstances without it becoming damaging to their psyche, and without inflicting that kind of pain, shame and horror on another person. As far as Michale Jackson, even if he believed that he was a child himself, children aren't attracted to children. Children don't touch each other sexually unless they've been given the information on how to do so. I don't believe they can be rehabilitated. There are too many instances of pedophiles being freed from prison only to go after their neighbor's children, or go online and prey on kids, or to get themselves into a position of trust where they can abuse their authority. I'm not exactly comfortable with the idea of a pedophile being released after a ridiculously light sentence and being allowed to commit those crimes that result in a second conviction. But until we start equating pedophilia on the same level as murder, they will be released. However, a "two strikes and you're out" type of thing would at least be SOMETHING to get these people out of the public and away from our kids.

Okay, we're agreed. The sentences must be harsher, and people who can be proven to have a child-like mindset should be remanded to psychiatric hospitals indefinitely.

Is the legal system so misguided that they are willing to let paedophiles comit a second crime against children. I fail to understand how the law can responsibly dictate that a paedophile cannot be rehabilitated and still release them from prison to recomit. They have already taken away one childs happiness, their youth and their innocence. I think that they should all be extradited and marooned on an island where they can never harm children again, there should be an Island for the men and one for the women so that they can not create children to torture also.

Yes, the legal system has its flaws. And since pedophiles generally are not given 25 years to life for molesting children, they are quite likely to be let out to reoffend. And where would this island come from? Our planet is already overpopulated and finding an uninhabited island that can sustain life that is far enough away from the rest of us is going to be pretty difficult. Unless we evacuate Australia and use it as a prison colony again.

I agree, I do not believe they can be rehabilitated at all. It's an uncontrollable urge they have to do the things they do. Castrating-whether chemical or physical won't help either. I say after the first offense(no second chance for something like that) they should be permanently locked away in a warehouse type of environment. No speical perks like tv, just a small 5x5 cell, with no window, 1 hour of recreation and shower time, and that's it. They repeatedly show over and over again they cannot function in society, and go on to commit their crimes again, sometimes even worse then the first ones. When I lived in Florida, there were several small girls abducted and killed, if those guys had been locked up from the start and released into society, those poor girls would still be alive today.

in short no. I think a peidophile should be kept locked up for ever when convicted of a first offense. I work with these guys in my day job and there isnt one of them that it is ever safe to release into wider society. However, nor do i believe killing them is the answer. If we kill a piedo we are simply letting them off. Each piedophile is tortured every day by other inmates. Generally speaking they are sugared. This involves disolving a large quantity of sugar in boiling water and tipping it over the piedo. This continues to burn for much longer than water alone. They never know when such an atack will happen, only that it surely will. Killing them stops this and gives them an easy way out, one they hardly deserve blessed be

I have read about a man that actually got convicted twice for a crime he did not commit and they were both crimes against children. The secound one i guess he got just because of his past and the fact that in all peoples eyes he was a childmolester. He is free today but lives a very stra´nge life. I have a weak memorie that they have also made a documentary about his life. Anyways, for this reason and many else I do not belive in deathpenalty. I do not e´belive that we have the right to kill someone, 2 wrongs does not make a right. Lifetime in jail would be alot better - even though it would cost more.

There are many proven cases of some pedophiles acturally not mentally developed past a certain age so they don't really feel they are doing wrong. The ones that know the difference are an entirely different problem. Either way they should not be allowed to roam in our society to harm another child. If it happens the first time, after a prison term they should be sent to a "city" specially developed for this type of people to live and work (support themselves not the tax payers) This would be a city where no children lived or were anywhere near. The whole city would be set up and run by these people and what products were made would be bought by the public to support this city. Most people would buy these products knowing these people would be kept there the rest of their natural life and the children would be safe from them. Pedophiles come from all money classes so each person could contribute to the working of the city and the products produced there. Working they would be supporting theirselves. Yes it is another type of prison but one that they did to theirself and much more pleasant then an actual prison that tax payers support. If they wanted to move it would have to be to the same type of city with the same restrictions and guards in an out of it. A request would be made with supervise help to make sure they actually went to said place. No way do I believe that they deserve to roam free after they abuse a child.

One of my best friends from childhood was convicted of "indecent liberties" with a 13 year old boy. He did 8 years of a 5 to life sentence. He's been out about 8 years now and hasn't been in trouble with the law in any way. I once asked him what he thinks they should do to him if he ever did that again. "I've been given a break here, if I ever do that again, they should bring back the firing squad". And I agree.
