Has anyone ever read the Silmarillion? This is supposed to be the beginning od the Middle Eart Saga. The book was written by his son, Christopher Tolkien and it tells us how the Gods created the Earth (Varda) and its inhabitants. I would say every Tolkien fan should read this book! Any thoughts?

The Silmarillion was as said by others written by JRR Tolkein, but finalized and published by Christopher Tolkien. Later he compiled the various unfinished tales books which were stories and papers the JRR wrote and then outines that Christopher finished. Christopher is good, but not as good as his father was at the descriptions and telling the stories.
The Silmarillion showed so much of the background of the Elves and Men and the clashes and reasons they were like they were in the trilogy.

Yes, I started it a few days ago, and I'm finding it highly discouraging to read, considering the complexity of the first few pages itself. Furthering my apprehension towards reading it is the fact that I read from an ebook, and it's really irritating to the eyes!
I guess the difference in the tone of the writing, as mentioned in the Preface by Christopher Tolkien, is because that JRR wrote it intermittently through out his lifetime, and hadn't even published the first ever book he had written!

I'm a major reader and I absolutely love the lord of the rings series but I must admit that it look me awhile to work my way through the simarillion. I agree that it's a must read for everyone but I'm warning that it definatly isn't an easy read.

I love the Silmarillion and I take it as my religion (one of them). Its philosophy is really wonderful, specially the music composed by Iluvatar (the God over All Gods which is the real authot of the universe) and how the other Valars have to palay this music, and how Melkor don't want to play it... very poetic and very real in my opinion.

I read the book a long time ago, and I have to say, after reading it I didn't think Elves were that cool anymore xDD they acted so much like humans did, betraying themselves, murdering, engaging into war, etc, so I realized I'd rather feel very proud of the human race from that moment on :P

Yes, i've read it. The book has awesome passages and others that are slow, dense and even boring. However, this book is essential to understand what happens in the lord of the rings saga. Without it, you have no idea of why do the Elves return, or where they're going when they leave...or why does Aragorn have such a long life, or who were the Numenor people....it's something you must read.

I've read The Silmarillion and I gotta say that it's an absolutely good read. Wonderful accounts and historical events that portray much of the Middle Earth before the Third Age and War of the Ring. I love the elven lore and things concerning brave and perilous deeds. The inspirational tale of the noble House of Hurin and so on did not fail to awe me.
It's definitely a must-read for Tolkien fans. A great insight and wonderful magical tale fit for any yearning Tolkien fan.
Anybody heard of The Children of Hurin yet? Supposedly an account and continuation about the House of Hurin. I'm definitely buying it. =)

Ah--my..another Tolkien lover..hehe...then you definitely have class!! Do you know how many times I've started The Silmarilion? I do mean to really get serious about reading it as it does give tremendous background to the whole Middle Earth experience---one could almost equate it as the bible of Middle Earth as Tolkien wonderfully describes how everything began..with music--I have read various parts of The Book of Lost Tales, and Unfinished Tales --one section of my bookcase is crammed full of nothing but anything and everything related to Tolkien, including the large one-volume Anniversary issue of Lord Of The Rings
My favorite line of all from LOTR is

Suil a mae govannen, mellyn! ("Greetings and well met, friends!" in Sindarin)

I'm a big fan, and I heard of it too. Never got the chance to read, but heard it hasn't got much action... That doesn't need to be anything bad. Just the opposite... :)

Ive read the the Silmarillion a couple of times. Its heavy going in places but gives an amazing and essential background to the whole LOTR series. Feanor is my favorite character.
