YaY!!! I just read something that proves I should go and take a nap! Seems a group of Harvard University researchers found that taking a nap at least three days a week can reduce one's risk of death from heart disease! Those who napped were found to have a 37 percent lower risk of dying from heart disease than those who stayed awake all day! (see the link below for the full story!)
What are your thoughts on this? Do you nap in the afternoon?

This is what I like about these studies. You have a lower rate of risk if you do this or do that. So, if I do several things that lower my risk for heart disease, such as in this case, then I should be able to get my risk down to zero. You know, 37% here, 15% there, 10% here...etc. And soon I am at over 100% risk free...lol. I am not convinced by these studies at all. There are too many other factors involved in heart disease and too many unknowns. This applies to most studies in other areas also. So, am I to imply that my risk is 37% higher if I don't take a nap 3 or 4 times a week? Who knows?

i always like to take a nap in the afternoon as sleeping is my best hobby... :-) i always take a nap when i am still young and even until now whenever i have free time, i will definitely take a nap... unfortunately, i am busy working now and i don't really have time to take a nap anymore... i really wish i can do that again like i used to do when i'm still in school...

I'm in a bit of a vicious at the moment with the medication I am taking. I'm having a real hard time sleeping at night and usually around 2 the next day I crash hard but don't want to go for a nap because I feel it'll make it even harder for me to get to sleep at night. The end result is that I have been exhausted for about 2 months.

Are you taking the medication (I remember which it is from a previous discussion) in the morning or evening? It is notorius for sleep problems, especially if taken in the evening. Try taking it in the morning. If you already are taking it in the morning, then I don't know what to tell you!

I take it (Lexapro) first thing after I wake up. My doc prescribed Rozerem to help with the sleeplessness but that actually made things worse

Hello, crazynurse,i also want to take a nap in the afternoon after reading this discussion but I am not able to do so,during the weekdays,i need to work and do not have time to take a nap at the lunch break,at the weeekend, usually,i will not feel sleepy or i may wake up late,i simply cannot fall asleep as i do not feel tired at the afternoon.
But I think if we have good sleeping habits and sleep enough at the night time,we may not need to take naps to keep us refresh during the day.

I LOVE napping. I don't do it often, I do it occassionaly, but God forbid somebody fine out that I'm taking a nap! I's like a dirty little secret! Apparently people who take naps are "lazy". I don't know...I guess if one isn't driven and doesn't want to be on the fast track they get labled as lazy. Sometimes people just need to relax and slow down a bit.

No problem, just a sign you are needing a nap! *wink* Yeah, seems people do want to call us lazy if we nap. How is caring for our bodies and allowing them to 'recover' and awake refrehed and with 'renewed' energy lazy? I can be so much more productive if I just cave in and nap for 30 minutes rather than be sluggish and move in slow gear!

I rarely take naps, but this might cause me to look into taking naps! I do occasionally with my husband on the weekends, for an hour or so, but then I always feel guilty for some reason. I do know that it makes me feel more relaxed, though. Thanks for the site!

Sounds good to me! I have actually taken several afternoon naps recently, only not on purpose. I have fallen asleep after sending my son to his nap on days when I was up very late the night before. It's a little disorienting and sometimes disappointing (when I had other things I was going to try to accomplish during his nap), but it's ultimately oh so satisfying!
I've seen in several different publications that it's important to get enough sleep if you want to lose weight. It stands to reason that there are other general health benefits to be had from having sufficient sleep. And, if it takes an afternoon nap to make the total of your sleep... then so be it! It's also probably good to take a break during the day to not just sleep but rest your whole system.

I never heard of such a thing, but thanks for letting us know about it. However, I cannot nap. I cannot sleep. I am too high strung. guess I won't be in the 37% low risk.

Well, that is a pretty good thing then. I used to take naps alot when I was pregnant and I hardly get any anymore. I like the sound of that and I will try to get my naps whenever I can.

That is great news for me because I do take a nap about 3 times a week. Never more and I don't really understand why I seem to do it just the 3 times and I don't feel like taking one any more often than that.

Well I would say yeah! I mean I would love to take a nap in the afternoon and but I am at my work place and it is impossible, though I would really like a new bill passed that states that every employee has to have one hour nap in the afternoon but I am keeping this idea to myself cause if they hear of it, they will haul me away to an asylum!

I fight taking naps. I feel guilty when I nap... that comes from my upbringing. I had a mother who was pretty abusive physically and mentally. She drummed into my head that if I sat down to so much as relax, I was nothing but a lazy slob. . . so, I have a very hard time taking a nap because it makes me feel like I must be a lazy slob, or like I'm wasting time that I could be doing something productive. Weird I know. I will take a nap once in awhile, but my husband has to assure me that it's Ok to do so.

That's an interesting finding. I don't have a nap schedule, but when I think I need one I'll take one. I am in Arizona for a while, and my boyfriend likes to get up early and go to bed early. This actually works for me, because I'm use to Eastern Standard time so his 9:00 is my midnight, and this allows me to go to bed and get up when I usually do at home. I hven't needed a nap since I got here.

I took a look. So a nap three days a week is good for you. Think of what napping every day will do and people just thought I was lazy! No I was not lazy. I was doing something productive. I was increasing my life span and reducing my risk of heart attacks. This applies to the ladies, doesn't it, as well as the gentlemen?

I've always thought naps are an important part of our lives. as for me it keeps me more aware and the energy for much better use..
I'm on some darn pills which have a side effect of putting me to sleep. (isn't fun)
Kudos and thanks for sharing,
