Does vitamin C really help you not catch colds?

I have heard this so often and I've tried to drink lots of orange juice and even taken vitamins with extra vitamin C, but I've yet to see a real difference in the amount of colds I get. Has anyone else seen a significant difference when taking more Vitamin C? And, if you have how much extra do you take?

Common Cold is basically caused by the virus, which is already a natural habitat in your throat. That means these virus are always present in ones throat. These are opportunistic in nature and they attack an individual when there is lower body resistance which makes a congenial condition for them to attack multiply and propagate. When ever there is reduced immunity or body resistance the local blood supply lacks the required white blood cells which normally keep check on these virus. So this is the time the virus attacks one!
Vitamin C is an anti oxidant which means it helps in reducing the stress with its own way of action by altering the waste products at cellular level. Vitamin C also increases your resistance against the diseases. This is just a enhancer of resistance, it is no cure for cold, as there is no cure for any viral disease and body takes care of itself by fighting it out! So we are helping our body by providing Vitamin C, to increase its resistance power against the diseases.Thuis it is not a wise thing to expect a dramatic results with Vitamin C as a cure for a common cold. Remember it is just a resistance enhancer!
If are suffering from frequent colds then better to avoid cold drinks as these things can make your throat sore and this predisposes it for Common cold! Frequent attacks of cold indicates a allergic manifestation and antiallergics should work for you!
You can try 'Cetirizine' tablets after consulting your doctor if you are having frequent bouts of cold ! I am getting quite a good results with these tablets. But be sure to have these tablets only after consulting with your doctor! All the best!

What I always heard was that it helped you to get over a cold faster....but without the additional vitamin D which helps you to absorb the Vitamin C....it does not do that much benefit....in my opinion.....

it does keep you healthier but that alone does not account for not catching colds.

I think what vitamin C does it to help strengthen your body immune system. If your body already has received enough of this via e.g. fruits and vegetables, then the pills you pop will really be extra.
The good thing about vitamin C is that it is water soluble and the extra, unnecessary vitamin C will just be passed out as urine. So just take as much as you like, the extra will be harmlessly disposed off.
When you have a strong immune system, you would be more resistant to colds. It is not a fool-proof thing. You can still catch cold - just more unlikely. ;-)

Yes i believe it does. I was getting a cold and started taking vitamin c pills and drinking orange juice. And in a few days i was better. Maybe it depends on your immune system. I know i hardly ever get sick.

I believe in the power of vitamin C alot especially if I feel a cold starting to come on I will take two vitamin C 500 mg. pills and drink alot of orange juice or food with it in it. And I start feeling better the same day and no cold. It is also good to take them everyday a 500 mg. of vitamin C. It will help possibly in building your immune system up and helping you fight off colds and such. The less colds you have the better your immune system. If you already have a cold full blown you can take it still to help alleviate some of the systems though it helps or it does me but everyone is different.

It might help a bit, maybe not get the cold as bad as it could be but I believe that if you are infected with some sort of bacteria or infection you are going to get sick no matter how much Vitamin C or how healthy you are.

It does assist in boosting your immune system and therefore does attribute to less colds...if you do end up getting a cold, it is not as bad as it could be. It doesn't prevent you from being sick at all, but it does relieve a lot. When I took it, I noticed a big difference. I am lazy and forget to take it half the time!

I take 1 500mg vitamin c every morning, along with a multi vitamin and omega 3 and d. I haven't been sick in a very long time. Though if you have young one's they are constantly getting sick, and you will tend to get sick like they do. I also wash my hands constantly, which I think helps in preventing to get sick just as much as taking a vitamin.

Vitamin C supplementation in doses up to 2 g/day does not decrease the incidence of colds
However, doses ranging from 250 mg/day to 1 g/day decreases the incidence of colds by 50%
Not really sure if it works or not I have taken Vit c when I have had a cold and it didn't appear to help at all
It is controversial at best whether or not it does any good. Guess it can't hurt LOL
Some say yes and others say no
Maybe if we took on a regular basis it would make more of difference

Yes, I dont' know the dosages exactly but I do know if you increase your dosage when you feel a cold coming on it will decrease its severity. And taking it regularly will help prevent most colds.

I too have always taken a lot of vitamin C in an effort not to get sick. I think it works, but maybe it is all in the mind... however, even if it is in the mind what does that matter...we still think we feel better. I guess the best way to obtain any vitamins is through food intake however, at least that is what I hear.
cheers,
