The top news story in my paper this morning discusses the latest in theivery. Theives are taking perfectly good car parts from cars and recycling them! Seems they are crawling underneath cars and cutting off the catalytic converters and exhaust systems! These are then cut open and the inside is loaded with high dollar metals which is then sold as scrap! A local car dealership has had several stolen from their lot and a nearby large city has reported dozens of similar incidents to both private owned cars and those at car lots. Can you belive this? Seems nothing is safe anymore. People are desperate for money! Your thoughts?

I think that people are getting desperate for money. Especially with the rising prices. I think it is going to get worse as things just keep taking big jumps. It is sad people would do such a thing. Who would have ever thought.

This reminds me of when they were concentrating on taking the headlights off of high end cars, among other lil pieces like that.
Folks will always find one more thing to steal-- Even in prosperous times there is a criminal element that is out there looking for the next big scam. How else would you explain spam?
This is just another chapter of how crazy people will get for a fast buck.

This has been going on for quite awhile here in Minnesota actually.
All the scrap yards have been told to report anyone trying to cash
in various types of metals or certain things like spools of wire etc.
HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Guess it took a while to reach the backwoods of Kentucky! You spoke of wire, we have had numerous people electrocuted/killed from trying to get some wire from the electrical poles. I believe it was copper.

Yes it's usually copper wire as that's the best for scrapping.
But the thiefs would steel spools of them from Phone Company
yards etc. Shame on them. Hahahaha!!
HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Wow, I never heard of this one. It is amazing people aren't smart enough to get a good education so they can get a decent job, but they are smart enough to come up with these incredibly smart scams and things to steal.
What is the problem with today's world? Man I feel like I am saying this every single day!

I haven't heard of this one, but you can never tell what is going to be the next stolen item these days! In one of the towns near mine, they have auto auctions every Tuesday. People buy the cars and try to drive them home, not all of them make it very far. So the main highway that runs by the auction house is littered with anywhere from 5 to 10 cars after the auction. During the night people are picking them up off the side of the highway and hitting the crusher in the morning. I know that they have been trying to make it mandatory to have a title, but I don't know if all the crusher companies require these. I don't know why these people just do not go get a real job to earn money. I also think that prices on everything are becoming so high, that people are taking more and more drastic measures to get money!

My thoughts....Hmmmmm.....Nothing is safe anymore. It seems like everything is being stolen. Nobody can afford anything anymore. I think that the government NEEDS TO QUIT raising prices. Granted that dont mean this wont happen, LOL. But im sooo sick of seeing all the prices rise soo much and for us not to beable to have or do or afford ANYTHING! It makes me sooo mad! GRRRRR! Sorry I didnt stick with the subject!

Oh no need to apologize, I feel that you DID stick to the subject. You spoke to one of the possible driving forces behaind the theft. I'm sure some may be desperate to feed a family but most are probably just money hungry thugs!

Well, I have heard of a whole car being stolen but never the parts of the car before. I will keep my eye out for my car. Thanks for sharing this.

Over the past few months, we have had people stealing wires from cable and phones lines out in remote areas for the metal. Even tubing from home owner's AC units! So, now we have to worry about our cars? Well, I guess it is a good thing that I have a garage! Replacing a converter and exhaust system is costly!!!

I believe it! Years and years ago, I had my '66 pontiac parked in my front drive right up close to the house and someone stole the battery right out of the car! Can you believe the gumption! I guess people will steal anything for a buck if that is what type of person they are!

At first thought you would think that these are lazy people just looking for a fast easy way to gain money. But in fact it is a lot of hard work doing this. So I have to wonder why they can not just get employment on the up and up. I guess criminal minds just do not think this way. Maybe its the trill of stealing what is not yours, I do not understand.

Seems a little crazy if you ask me.
I think they're are a lot of desperate people so this doesn't surprise me but why not take the whole car? instead of parts which could serious injure someone..
Oh...

o my gosh...they really are getting much more sophisticated...that should explain why most cars often stop in the middle of the street probably some of the parts ot that car were stolen...that is the main reason why i dont want to drive my own car so that when i leave it someone will watch over it.

That is just another thing for us all to watch. Thieves have found just about everything that they can to steal. While I do believe in some cases it is desperation and the result of a bad lot in life, in other cases this is because these people will not go out and get a real job. They are taking the easy way by taking things other people have worked for.
