Hi....I have a nine year old son who suffers from a mood disorder, he often hurts himself. At times he bends is fingers to the point where it will become swallen, he bangs his head on the wall, he bites himself and last week he punched himself until he recieved a black eye! I am really scared and worried, because I don't know how to deal with it anymore! The doctors have changed his meds three times before & he still suffers from this violent behavior.I have to phsyically restrain him when his behavior becomes violent and it kills me inside! I hate to see my son in so much physical and emotional pain. Although it is tough, I have accepted it because this is the path that the lord has provided us.
All I ask is that you please join me in my prayers for my son. It is my faith that has got me this far in life and I hope that the lord can continue to shine in our life and can provide spiritual help for my child.

It sounds to me like your son has more than just a mood disorder. I wonder about your doctors. Are they psychiatrists? Could he be autistic? Please excuse my nosiness. I am a retired mental health counselor and I have a hard time believing there isn't something that could help with his problem. Not just medication, but also other kinds of treatment. You have probably had him to a million doctors who have tried a a hundred things and I am butting in. Anyway, you do have my thoughts and prayers.

I live on an island called Saipan...I don't know if you have ever heard of it, but anyways....It has been said that he needs to see a psychaiatrist in order to get the "right" meds for him and to evaluate his mood disorder. Right now he has been diagnosed with (Mood Disorder [296.99], Epilepsy [345.1] and Learnig Disorder [315.2]) We are in therapy because that is all they say they can do at this time. Because unfortunatly we don't have a psychaiatrist on island. He is currently on Depakote...which is supposed to supress his mood swings, but honestly it is becoming worse as each day passes. Thank you so much for your thoughts, prayer and wonderful insight:)

I worked with special kids at a preschool level for several years. We did have one child who would come in with bite marks up and down his arms. We would ask him where they came from and he would say "I did it at naptime at daycare." He would get angry and violent. Over the summer he was evaluated for food allergies, and was given a very restricted diet. He was like a different child. All of that is to say that maybe he needs to be tested for food allergies. I am praying for him right now, and for your other kids, too. I would also wonder about a sensory disturbance. I understand that you are in a place that does not have lots of doctors and lots of choices, and that is so sad.

Yes, I agree that he should definitely be tested for food allergies as certain foods in children who are sensitive will set off a behavior that mimicks a behavioral disorder. Also, there is much better medication than depakote for mood disorders, but he needs to be evaluated by a psychiatrist. I pray that in your journeys you and your son will be led to a doctor who at long last can finally help him. I believe in my heart that this will happen.

Thank you so much for your insight. I have heard so many times before by others about a "sensory disturbance" I have to bring him to the hospital on monday for yet, another blood test and I will bring up the "food allergies" to his doctor. It is really frustrating because his doctor can only do so much....And the fact is he needs to see someone else! We went to Guam last month where he recieved a consultation from a neurologist and thats where the "Mood Disorder" diagnosis came from....But all he could do was prescribe Depakote. I have spoken to his doctor here about this issue but she told me that, I have to undrstand that she is not a psyciatrist and she can not prescibe the meds he needs. Even the therapist that we see told me the same thing! I love my island because this is my birth place, but I have already decided that the only choice for us is to move away. That way my son can recieve the treatment he needs. Thank you so much for your prayers:) & letting me ramble on about my problems...lol..I have recieved so many responses from other Mylot members, and I must say that it is members like you all that make this such a great place to be;) Thank You Again!

I'm sorry you live in an area with limited health care options. That makes things much harder. Does your son have problems communicating? Does he seem to occupy another world? Is he attracted to objects that flutter, rotate or move in a regulated way?
Since you do have access to a computer and the internet, do a search on autism and see if his behavior matches what you read. There is work going on for new meds for autism. It seems there is quite a rise in this illness and experts say one out of every 150 children could be affected. If you have questions, let me know. I will keep you in my heart.

I too believe that he suffers from a certian extent of autism because he does have some speech delay, he tends to fixate on certain colors and of course he seems to have a sensory defect. But the only thing that doctors have diagnosed him with is "A Mood Disorder[296.99] (unspecified), eplilesy [345.1] and a learning disorder [315.2]" He has been on the schools evaluation list for two years now, but nothing has been done! I finally choose to go to (NMPASI), they are lawyers who advocate for children with disabilities. They have assured me that my son will recive a psychological evaluation as well as speech and behavior at the beging of the school year in August. I am also praying that it goes through! The problem here on our island is that there are limited funds and thats why our children suffer. Thank you so much for your thoughts, I am truly grateful for all your thoughts and prayers.

I feel sorry for you as I am a mom myself and I fully understand how you must feel. Have the doctors told you what exactly is his sickness? How about looking for a really good doctor in that line? Do some research work so you will also know more about the disease and learn things that could help him, like the food that he should eat, exercises, etc., besides the medication he is taking. You and your son have my prayers.

Thank you for your response! I have done various researches in the hopes that I can find something that would help. But honestly, I still can't understand where his need to self injur comes from. I have done everything from blaming myself to balming others....I really don't quite know how to deal with it anymore, I have three children and it has also taken a toll in their lives. My five year old is affraid of him and my one year old at times begins to mimic him. I am greatful for your thoughts and your prayers...THANK YOU

I am very sorry to hear what your family is going through! You and your son will be in my prayers!
I was reading more on the post and you said your son was on depakote. That is for seizures and bi-polar. Could also be for migraine headaches.
I agree with another responder that the symptoms sound more like he is autistic. Good Luck!

Thank you for taking the time to respond:) Yes, he is on Depakote....The doctor said that it would help him with his mood disorer, but I am honestly confused:(...Because they are not exactly sure what type of disorder he has..they just labeled it as "A Mood Disorer!" I have been going through this for over seven years now and it has taken it's toll on me. I appreciate your prayers and hopefully, someone out there can help me and give me th peace of mind that I seek. Which is: For someone to diagnose my son with the (right) disorder and provide the (right) meds and therapy that he can benefit from! Thank you again
