Does being ill make you depressed?

I was diagnosed with diabetes about 6 months ago. Sometimes I get so depressed about this situation I feel like giving up. But, I don't want to have all the awful complications of diabetes, so I make myself keep at it. It's so hard, though, sometimes.

noooooooo... not at all. If it's a cold then I feel drowsy, when it's more than a cold I get angry, if it's a severe cold I become ironic, I joke a lot, I make fun of my situation and I become intentionally morose. If it's an other illness I get sleepy, don't talk a lot... but I don't think I have time to become depressed...

I wasn't talking only about diabetes... and that's not the worse illness ever... or if you get diabetes you immediately get depressed? Getting depressed it's influenced, in some way, by the time you spend alone thinking and wondering how come this horrible illness struck just me and oh how bad I'm feeling for myself... on the other side diabetes it's not related directly with time... So no, Saying I don't have time to become depressed is not like saying I don't have time to get diabetes...;)

No, diabetes is not the worst illness in the world. I never said it was. But, it does sound as if you have never had anything worse than a cold. I hope you never do.

It makes perfect sense that upon falling ill, someone becomes depressed. In cases such as myself, I was diagnosed with depression and till this day I still don't know how or why I fell into such a state. Change and the unknown can be hard for anyone to cope with, so it makes sense that your feeling this way. I hope that you have a good friend to talk with about how you're feeling, sometimes that works better than any medicine out there!

I know what you mean on this one. But u know it is a catch 22 situation here working as well. Illnesses make you depressed and being depressed can also make you ill. Sometimes it seems like a no win situation i know. I am not doing to bad now no so depressed hopefully it will stay that way but i was like you are talking not to long ago.

I do not have diabetes. My dog has. She gets shots and meals every 12 hours. When the doctor confronted me with the diagnosis it was a bad shock. I read about diabetes and learned a lot. All was new and not necessarily better and it took month until this state of being paralized vanished. Diabetic dogs only have an average life expectancy of two years. But some live 8 years. One year has passed and my dog is well adjusted to the insulin shots. I have gotten more confident, I think she can make it much longer than another year. My dog is healthy and happy and she likes the diet I have to cook for her. We are having a pretty good live together. I think you will adjust and become reasonably healthy and happy again. There is much worse sicknesses than diabetes.

Yes , it sure is depressing being ill... You begin to think of all the things you should ve done to avoid this state and brood over how happy the others are and your insignificance.. unless you are well taken care off..

Diabetes is not fatal, nor does it curtail your daily activities. With the progress in medicine, if you keep your blood sugar under control you have near normal life. So don't give up, these troubles are sent to make us strong. The good part is that now you can get everything made with sugar substitutes, so if you have a sweet tooth then you don't have to deprive yourself from eating sweet things also. See a person who has no legs, you won't be sorry for not having shoes.

I don't have diabetes, but any chronic illness can lead to depression. You are right though that you need to keep up with a disease like diabetes so that things don't get worse.

I know what you're going through. I had an uncle who has diabetes... He was a really fun person until he was diagnosed.... Then he became depressed and lost all fun in life.... Good thing he overcame it.... I know you will too..
