When driving down a road and spotting a sign that says "Free", do you slow down and check out what is there for the taking? My husband has now become a "Free" freak. A couple of weeks ago, he brought home a rocking chair, bird house, electric paint gun, a rocking horse, and some other wooden items. Today he is off to gather up some free insulation. Do you pull over and gather up the free stuff or pass it by?

We will slow down and look at anything that is placed beside the road. Yes, we have brought home some stuff. In my area we have what we call a spring and fall cleanup. Thats when everyone throws out their "junk". I call it treasure hunting night. One man's trash is another man's treasure.lol.

Dang it, they just came back empty handed. No insulation. He should have picked it up when he first saw it.

i absolutely will bring home anything that is considered useless to someone else and "useful" to me. now, by useful i mean that someday i might bea able to use it, do something with it, fix it, etc. my wife has begun to cringe when i bring something else home. until i prove its worth, and i have gotten some great finds, it just another piece of junk to her. i'll never ubderstand women. lol. nice topic.

Now , Now in our house I am the one who picks up the junk and brings it home. I used to shop off the curbside in Montreal .One such item is a night table which I still have. It would embarrass my husband to do such a thing .

When I was married, my husband brought home everything he saw by the side of the road - stray animals, furniture, bags of clothing, a packing blanket, dirty baseball caps, anything! Some of his finds were fabulous, but a lot of it should have stayed by the side of the road.

LOL, Honey I see free, there is no pulling over, I am trying to climb out the window while the car is still moving!!!!
Lord yes, I am a nut for the word free. The last I seen free, it this wonderful armoire that I was able to set my TV and DVDs in and close when not in use. It is wonderful. I would never pass a free sign, unless it's for more kids or another husband, then forget it, I'll break the sound barrier going by so fast :oP

yup i go for freebies too. like in the mall, they give out free samplers and i'd fall in line to try them out. i actually had a research on subliminal stimulation and the words "free" and "sale" have become marketing strategies too because they have this really big effect on a person on a subliminal level. it's like an automatic reaction for a person to switch his/her attention to that which is free or that which is on sale. so i don't blame your husband for making all those stops. my research actually says that it's the natural thing to do.

I have yet to see any signs here saying Free but wish that there would be some free signs. I would probably check things out as usually there is a catch to something that is offered for free. That is very neat that your husband got all of those things for free. Wish people would give away things here for free but have yet to see it.

It depends on the traffic. I do often stop when I see it and do it more so with my girlfriend in the van with me. Also depends on how quickly I need to get to where I am going. I had a beautiful oriental rug that someone wanted to be rid of. Was stored in the house that burned. I had plans for that despite the worn spot it had.
Time to start all over!!

No better time than the present Willowlady. It amazes me what people toss out.

I agree. When things are good people are so wasteful at times. A boon for people like me that have to start all over and picking up these items keep them from the landfills. Thanks much for responding to me. Have a great evening.

I'm always curious and do slow down to see what is there. My husband is the one that doesn't like this, he gets very annoyed whenever I'm with him and tell him to slow down, I want to see what is there. Oh well. It's usually not anything good like your hubby found. Sounds like he got some useful items!

There was a time when I was the one to ask him to slow down and he would speed right on by. When he found that old rocking chair he slammed on the brakes for a closer look. It is a great old chair.

I have never seen free stuff at the side of the road. Maybe they have people just waiting to grab it up and it's gone before I get there. I do see people going around on garbage collection days to pick up some stuff.

If it's something that we can actually use and it's in good condition, we'll stop and pick it up. There have been some things that we didn't need, but were tempted to pick up before the voice of reason kicked in. Hehe. I mean, if we don't have use for it there's no sense in bringing it home to collect dust right?

My husband seldom brings home anything that will not serve a purpose. I once had the habit of collecting and no longer do it. Although, it sometimes is hard to pass by something that you have always wanted and have no place to put it.

I have done this when I see things that I needed. I have gotten furniture for my house when I needed it. I have seen a few other items. I couldn't pick them up at the time and they were gone on the way back through. I think that this is a great way for people to get rid of unwanted items, while others can get items that they need.

For Free? sure, I would check it out to see if there was anything I could use. You just never know what you can find when people through their junk away. My neigbor is a "free" freak too and has me walking with her from time to time to check out the neighborhood LOL embarrasing but fun at the same time LOL

Hi Elusive. I see nothing wrong in taking free items that are offered to you-as long as they are things you truly need. I draw the line at accumulating things that you have no use or need for. Why not leave them for someone who truly could use them? I used to be a member of freecycle.com where things were given away. It did not work out well for me because even though I got rid of some items that I no longer wanted, I could not acquire anything since I did not have transportation.

Freecycle seems to be a hit and miss with me. There are more people looking for stuff than there are people looking to rid themselves of unwanted items.

Wow! I am with your husband. I like free stuff and yes
given the chance I will always at least stop and look at the stuff . It sounds like he really hit pay dirt? Was the stuff he got in good condition ?

in my country, it is seldom that there are free stuff lying around the streets as i assume is from wherever you are. anyhow, if i did find free stuff that will be useful to me, why not? but only if it will be useful. if it will only add to the clutter of my already-cluttered home, i wouldn't pull over. :-)

I do... I'm hella poor. Plus I was just raised that way! When I was a little kid, my dad got my bicycle, my scooter, and a lot of my other toys out of people's garbages!!!

I have picked up a few things that were free along the road. I have met people who drive around town the night before garbage pick up to look through peoples trash. They have found some good stuff that way. Sounds like your husband has a nose for the bargains.
