Would you die for your Country?

I know that apparently the question is silly, but i don't think it is. Many people would answer yes, because they think that their country is the most important thing and it would be an honor to do it etc. But there are other people who think that one mustn't die for any flag because persons are more important.
What is your opinion about this? Do you think that you would give your life for your country? Do you think it's worthwhile? thanks on advance for your opinions, my friends.

Well the wat things are going now in my country, it seems like i will..Lol.
Now seriously i do not think i will die for anything, but i did join the army for 3 years and i do live in israel, so i guess i will.
This is a very confusing question to answer to, i just know that my country is very important to me, and i would do alote for her.
i also know that every 18 year old kid joins the army here, and that means that there is a chance that he will die for this country.

yeah, in a place like israel the idea of dying for your country is way more real than in most other countries, that's for sure. Thanks liranlgo.

Well Lightnin Honey this is a very good question and my answer is - I'm not sure! I know I would give my life for my kids in a heartbeat so if dying for my country would benefit their lives then yes I would! If giving my life for my country was a political gesture that was of no real benefit then no I wouldn't! I think what I am trying to say that it would depend entirely upon the circumstances - sorry I am so vague here - just trying to be honest! xxx

It's not vague...it's just that maybe this question cannot be answered with a plain yes or no....very true what you said about the circumstances and them involving your kids and family....really a great response hon, thank you.

I admire your answer and I was just about to write the same thing. Three years ago when I could not envision myself having children I made the choice that if I had to, I would die for my country, because I wanted to give other kids a chance to love her as much as I did.
Three years later, if you don't have children, what use is a country?

oh thank you both for your lovely words - and you for best response Lightnin darling! As for my other lovely friend I take it you would like to have children and don't? I will pray that you receive your wishes. Sometimes our country does need us but just because you don't have children doesn't mean you have to give your life for your country - you can help make it a better place in many ways! Good Luck my friend! xxx

No - sorry - absolutely not! I am not a patriotic person at all. The only things I love are my own family and friends, and though I would like to say I would lay down my life for my loved ones (don't think you can say you would definately do this until you've ever been put in that position), - I certainly wouldn't do it for my country. Maybe it's because I am of mixed roots myself. Whilst born in England with an English Father, - my Mother was from Belarussia, and her family were originally from Moscow in Russia, so I was bought up with quite a "mixed identity". Also, my partner is from Argentina with strong family ties in italy - so we are such a mixture, that I don't feel strongly about any particular country - more a citizen of the world. And certainly I don't feel committed enough to die for anything!
Cheers.

Yes, I totally agree with you. I was actually thining about MyLot here the other day, and figured that the reason I particlarly enjoy your discussion topics and answering them, is because you have a very similar "mindset" and way of thinking to my own in many things - and I guess it is the European thing:-))

I totally understand what you're saying. It's obvious that we are European, the way you and I have reasoned in this topic is very European, and hard to find elsewhere. thank you.

Seems you have a copycat Lightnin! I'll leave it to you to take care of it.

But to answer your question, to protect my country if it were invaded? To protect our families and way of life, yes I would.

No hon, you misunderstood me. I was saying that someone stole your post, copied it word for word and posted it as their own.
I see that it's been deleted so someone must have turned them in to myLot.
Sorry I didn't make myself clearer.

I've taken the oath more than once, so yeah, I would die for The United States of America. I went to Desert Storm ready to die for Kuwait. I did search & rescue and ran ambulance in the inner city, so I'm even willing to die for a perfect stranger.

How are you doing ParaTed2k.I find nothing funny in your response.I also took the oath from 81 to 84 and I thank you for your service. Most people don't understand that fighting for your country in a democracy is not the same as fighting for your current government. Our country transcendes its current government. It is ever changing at our will. I will also agree that dieing for your country is not a goal but fighting for your country and defeating your enemies is.I wish more people could understand this. We are under a threat that may take generations to play out. I hope we have the resolve.

Dying literally for a certain country may not be a favorable thing to do for some. Yes, I am talking as an ordinary citizen only. However, for our soldiers, police and those engage in surity matters, they must always be ready everyday to give their everything for the country.
Nationalism is not just dying for the country but more so living a life for the good of others or fellowmen. We need more of that living heroism rather than the dying one.
Of course, this is just my opinion.

It is actually a complex question lightnin. One that i have trouble thinking about a response. In general my first response would probably be no. Not really.
But it really depends on so many things. Were people in my country suffering, being killed, loosing human rights? In that case maybe I would .Not necessarily die, but fight for it and die if that was my fate.
On the other hand, if none of that was happening and my country had just lost it's independence somehow but everything was the same, and there was no cruelty or any loss of rights, then the answer would probably be no. It would not be important enough. Throughout the ages this happened in so many countries and that's just the way it goes. In some cases it is even beneficial - I"m thinking for example way back when rome invaded the peninsula. WE didn't like but it brought many benefits in the end.

Really good answer arka...and you're right, it's complex. People have, do, and will always fight for their lives and our freedom...and that's our animal instinct. I think we often confuse that with fighting for our country...it's really a blurry limit that separates both things.

Exactly lightnin. MOst of us will certainly die for survival, or for loved ones. We might even give our life to save a number of people that are suffering or being mistreated. WE often do that in the name of our country, but it's not necessarily so.
A few of us will fight for our country. For patriotism, or any other reasons - some not even the best -. That's commendable. But they really are a not the majority of people.

I am not the patriot kind. I live in Brazil... Do you think it would be worth, dying for my country? Come on, people kill people in here! People steal and robber everyday! Is it worth dying for this?
I think it would be much more worth studying hard and getting a job, and then donating to help my country develop. Then we're talking about something worth.

Well, I'm sure there are great people out there, but mostly it's not worth to die for those who doesn't deserve it... And there are a lot of people that doesn't deserve it!

that would depend on the situation. if its wartime, my country is invaded by id!ots, then yes i will take up arms and willing to die for my country. if my country decide that if i strap a bomb around my waist and go to another country to prove a point, no i will not.

I would give my life for my children and my family in a heartbeat, this much is for sure. But I would not lay down my life for my country. At one point and time I probaly would have, but right now there is no way. this country seems to have turned its back to those that really need its help.So no way would I do this.

I will if it would benefit majority of my fellow countrymen or it would give my family honor or security. It's very rare for someone to have an opportunity to do something heroic. If that opportunity comes to me, I'll grab it. I always wanted to be part of something.
