can't do sit ups

What can a person do to lose weight when they can't do sit ups? I have tried doing them, but I fail every time. I get out with the dogs during the day so I am not a couch potato. I can't afford to go to a gym and we don't have enough room for any equipment. Any ideas?

Honestly, sit ups aren't going to do much to help you lose weight anyway. They are great to tighten your ab muscles, and by working out your muscle you can burn extra calories, but sit ups alone will not do it.
When you say you get out with the dogs during the day, what does that mean? Is it for 5 minutes, or for 2 hours? If it is for a smaller amount of time, I would suggesting trying to lengthen that amount of time. Maybe going out 2-3 times during the day. Also, are you doing a leisurely stroll with the dogs, or are you breathing hard and breaking a sweat. The more you put into your walks, the more you will get out of it.
An inexpensive tool that might help are some of those wrist and ankle weights that you can get. Wear those when you walk with your dogs, and you will build extra muscle and work harder to get around.
When you aren't walking your dogs, find extra things to do to keep you moving. One thing I have done is when I fold laundry and to put items away one at a time, rather than piling all the towels in a pile and carrying them to the closet at once, I make 4 trips to put towels away. I started doing this when I started wearing a pedometer (you can get one for pretty inexpensively) and found that I was no way near the 10,000 recommended (12,000 if you are trying to lose weight). Getting a pedometer might be an eye opener for you to see how many steps you really are getting in.
Also, to lose weight you really have to readjust your food intake. Take a look at what you eat during the day and see what small adjustments can you make. Do you really need that slice of cheese on your sandwich, etc. Little things throughout the day add up and mean less calorie intake.
Another thing that has helped me is to keep a food journal. Sometimes as you graze on food during the day, you just don't realize how much you have eaten at the end of the day!
Good luck to you!

The sit ups were to reduce my belly. We have 2 huskies that I take out at odd times during the day. I usually get in a total of at least 6 miles a day. It is not fast walking due to foot problem and the fact that I have to breathe through my mouth. I left my ankle weights in the States when I moved. I have looked into getting another set but my foot problem won't let me use them just yet.
As far as eating during the day goes, I have a bowl of shredded wheat for breakfast and 2 slices of toast for lunch. That is it until dinner. I really don't eat much.
I put the weight on when I had my foot/leg in a cast for 6 weeks and couldn't get around. Now I am trying to lose what weight I did gain.

They say that the best exercise is just plain old walking. You don't have to have a treadmill to do that. Walking only 30 minutes a day will do the trick. I have also found a DVD exercise tape on walking. She does a 30 minute exercise involving walking. So even if the weather is bad you can still walk.

It took all summer, but I lost 16 lbs. last summer, just randomly walking my sister's dogs. I did not go fast because if we did, they pulled me off my feet. I fell like six times while I was helping to care for them, and always hurt my bad knee. Spiritwolf, keep up the good work.

I read this article with interest, as it's something I've been trying to find too.. I can't do things that make me too out of breath as i've got asthma, I love swimming, but it's too cold at the moment even to go swimming (I hate being cold with avengence) so there's not a huge amount else left to do, yes I do walking but only about once a week, when I get out and do some photography, other than that I don't have much time what with working and other daily tasks you have to complete!

No worries really because doing situps is not going to help you lose weight. Situps might at most help you to firm your abdominal muscles.
To lose weight, the best trick is to run. Just run around your neighborhood. It's free and you don't need to gym. :)

I recommend that you do swimming. Then do something too with your diet. I mean minimize the carbohydrates intake and eat less while you do more activities which can make you sweat. If you want what everybody suggest is for you to walk or run around. God bless!

Walking is a good exercise and all you need is good shoes to do it. Well, ok, you need clothes and a place to walk. But, you would have clothes anyway, and it's easy to find places to walk if you want to. 30 minutes a day is ample for good health. Remember to drink at least 8 8-ounce glasses of water a day, too. And, eat lots of vegetables. They are low in fat and carbs.

Okay, sit ups will not make you lose weight, they will tone your abdominal muscles, strengthen your back and can also make your stomach look bigger. Usually a modification called a crunch is recommended with your hands crossed across your chest, knees bent and coming up only as far as you can. You may also want to look for instructions for a reverse sit up. Lay on your back and bring your legs up in the air. I am glad you cannot see me, as I need to follow all this direction myself. Good luck. By the way, if you lose fat, but build muscle, you will weigh more, but you will be in better shape, and will be more fit.
