Possibly no,i'd guess....
To be very honest i hardly remember myself returning the excess change i got from the shop keeper/stores.Most of the time i.e almost all the time i'd walked away with it even if i know that the cashier has returned me the change in excess. But if i find the shop very small and very unlikely that he will become a stock holder by running his shop,i'd feel pity and i swear i won't cheat on him/her.I must had returned few times to those people, i believe, when i was a kid.Infact i remember a shopkeeper returning me a change of 100 bucks when i'd only pay him 50 bucks.Back then i was a small kid. That time i walked away only to get scolded by my dad.I made up my mind i'd never take excess change from small shopkeepers. But what about big big malls and supermarkets...very tempting...they are.I guess i'll cheat with them.
How about you?

Yes. It has happened to me many times so far. Many times , shopkeepers give me more than what they are supposed to give, but still I will go back to them and return them their money back promptly.
I do believe that, only the hard earned money will stay with you forever and will help you.

I always return any excess because I feel that the person at the check out is working for low wages any way and if they had to make up what they were short it would not be fair. I did once have an experience at a bank drive up though and if I ever came across this woman again there is no way I would take her anything back. She had lived in Public Housing when I was the director and I constantly had problems with her - especially non payment of rent. She finally moved and I didn't know where she went. I picked my daughter up from work one day and she asked me to go through the drive up at this bank so we could cash her paucheck. Well I did and lo & behold who was working there - this woman who had lived in the housing. I handed her the check - she handed me back an envelope with the cash in it and I drove away. My daughter counted it and said she had $100 too much so off I went - back into the drive up. It was the same woman and I said to her I think you made a mistake - she informed me she didn't make mistakes so I put the envelope in the drawer and told her to count it. She did - kept the overpayment of $100 and never even so much as said Thank You. Oh you can bet if that ever happened to me again with her - I would just drive away and not look back even though I am basically a very honest person.

That was a nice experience. Very overwhelming and tear-welling. I too feel pity for low-wagers(who earns lower than me,lol).Esp. if they can't meet their living out of their earnings. We put up two houses for rent in my home town. And when they couldn't pay in time i convince my dad not to be too aggresive with the rent collection, although becoz they mostly haapen to be our far kins, student friends, etc.

I will return the change every time. I'm a born again Christian and it is stealing to keep the change even if it was a mistake on the shops part. Mostly though I go into a store near me that trys to overcharge me for things every time so now I've had to get much wiser and point out if something has been reduced or they have made some other mistake. It usually is every time I go into this store that they overcharge me.

A shop i know would never return the change if its equal to a cent/two. Living in a foriegn land isn't better anyway. You are charged with exorbitant amount for evrything.Taxi, even for vegetables and fruits at the vendors. So i am only trying to take revenge for what they did to us.

I always give back access change.I was a manager in retal for over 15 years. It is store policy to fire for shortages on registers.I hated firing some of my cashiers. They were some of the best. After all the are only human and can make mistakes.

I am bad, lol.I am honest, thats what i am saying what i am and how iam. And if all those vendors are fair to me i'll also be fair with them.Infact i'll take the excess and drop it into the beggar's bowl,if the shopkeeper is a nastier one. I don't go broke and iam contented with what i am earning, but this is how life is in some city.

Hey rekhum,
a good topic for discussion, that merits a response.. Well, I always returned the extra money or excess change I received.. The only reason perhaps is that I could not bear my heart scoldin' me as a cheat..
Most times, I feel it's enough if you could answer yourself!!!.. what do u say?

Thanks,I was wanting to knit this thread long back until yesterday when i got excess change from a shop i know.
I don't know for some reasons why people of a native country always want to extort more money from the aliens. Esp, when shopping at a bargaining market. And small shops wouldn't return the coins saying 'later please,no change' .And who will go back often to get an amount equal to cent? that makes me feel okay if i cheat with these liers.

Yep, I have done that several times...I don't like keeping money that doesn't belong to me. It is tempting to take it, but I never give in...although, if I don't check my change right then and there...I guess there is no way to know if I got extra or not...!

One time I was at Target and the cashier gave me an extra $20 in my change. I noticed once I got out of the store. I had a lot to do that day so I didn't think much of going back in.. but throughout the day it kept bothering me so I eventually went back and returned the $20. The cashier was so thankful! I felt a lot better. I don't like the idea of keeping the money... it makes me feel as if I am stealing, even if it wasn't my fault. That was quite a few years ago. Now that I have had jobs as a cashier myself I understand why she was so glad... you can get in a lot of trouble if your till isn't right at the end of the day, especially if it is $20 under.

I am learning to return whatever that isn't mine from now on. Even the egg plant and a tomato i stole yesterday from a vendor a la Olliver Twist style, because he was ugly and seem to be very unfair with his weight stones and how he weighs the vegetables( he was throwing the potatoes hard into the weighing bowl;a trick they do.).After getting to know their views i will not take excess from the cashiers.I feel guilty but i havn't cheated on cashiers anyway.

I don't usually pay attention when they give me the change but when I do notice I say something before I think. After I return the money I think how stupid of me I could have kept it. I guess I am initially honest but given time to think about it I may not be that honest.

yes, I am guilty..i got change for 3 cent a and the cashier counted out three one dollar bills instead of giving me my three cents..i was at a phone booth when i was a kid and i hung up the pay phone and a lot of change came out..my dad was the telephone man(and we lived in a small village) and i told him and showed him my bag of change i got from the payphone but he just told me to keep it..was i ok to keep it?
but i have given money back to the bank when they cased a check(ss) and they overpaid me..also numerous times I have given back an overpayment..once a wino dropped ten dollars and i was his paperboy..i gave him the paper free because we had a contest..he would not have known the difference..as when I gave it back..he just said."this is my fishing money?" well, to this day I was glad i gave
WHitey his money back..but what do I know?

I think it's up to them to do their job properly. If you are too stupid to add, subtract or count, then I'm not going to pick up your slack for you! I never bother to check my change so I probably have been overcharged or undercharged a number of times. But that's ok, what you lose on the swings you gain on the roundabouts. Or, in other words, I'm not bothered about occasionally cheating the shops because I'm sure they occasionally cheat me as well, so it all works out even.

More often than not, I return the extra. Especially if it's clearly someone new working & they're goofing up because they're nervous. But on occasion when a cashiers been rude or they've made the mistake because they're busy chatting up the bag-boy, then I'll pocket the mistake. I suppose that isn't right either, but if they were doing their job it wouldn't have happened.

Hello, Rekhum!
Usually, when I notice I have got excess change, I do return it to the shopkeeper. There are many honest people, and I use to visit their stores. Knowing that they are honest, I certainly give them back what's theirs. They work hard everyday to make a good income, so I wouldn't like to be the one messing up with their lives.
Once, the shopkeeper gave me 10 Bucks as an exchange, while he was supposed to give me only 2, if I'm not mistaken. I was younger, but not very much. I went back and gave it to him. The guy gave me and my brother some free chewing gums because we returned him the money.
Now, about Supermarkets and stuff, no I don't give it. I hardly ever buy something at a Supermarket. Only if I notice on the time I get it, because otherwise I don't go back to give it to the casher.
