If you were born without all five senses, would you know that you are alive?

This is something which intrigues me greatly. In my opinion, if you were born without all five senses, you wouldn't know that you are alive. Without prior experience of sight, hearing, etc. you wouldn't be able to have any thoughts or images in your mind. I would like to know your opinions on this subject.

You are way to deep for me. You are giving me a headache on this one. I had not planned on having to think this hard tonight. I am tryig to come up with some way to prove you wrong, but so far, you are coming up right. I am going to have to say yes, you will know that you are alive. God can speak in your spirit and tell you that you are alive. God can do anything and he does not need your five senses to communicate to you. He said, my sheep know my voice and a stranger they will not follow. Most of the time that is an inner knowing. We don't have to see him, hear him, touch him, taste him, or feel him to know that he is there and that we are alive in him. Did I get it? Will you accept that answer?

Very well said. I myself find it hard to find a logical explanation so i just said perhaps you wouldn't really have an idea but you're right. God is capable of anything and everything - even the impossible - so yes, I accept your answer. And once again, thank you for your insightful response. I hope you will never get tired bringing some light into the issues I keep on asking. :)

Thank you. I admit that I admire your deep thinking. Your questions are very challenging and I enjoy them a lot. Keep them coming.

I doubt you would know that you were alive. I guess that you'd merely be in an unconscious state. You'd still be breathing, but you wouldn't be able to see/hear/smell/feel/taste anything. If you have no stimuli to react to, then you won't react. You'd merely be in a sleepy state, in my opinion.

Here's what intrigues me more... Were you alive before you were born and aquired the senses? And if you weren't then where were you?

What do you mean exactly by "before you were born" - before you were brought into this world, i.e. you are still in your mother's womb or way, way before you were conceived? If it's the former, I'd say you are still alive (which is why I am against abortion as it's synonymous to murder) but haven't acquired your senses yet and your mother can attest as well that she can feel a life within her womb. If it's the latter, well, of course you're not alive but I don't have any idea as to where exactly you are.

Yeah I mean I have a cousin who was born blind she does very well as a matter of fact she is now a school teacher for other blind students. So I thing eventually you learn to live without hearing or seeing. Now some of the other's I'm not sure about altogether. I hope this helps answer your question.

This is a good question. I'm not sure whether I would or not, but I appreciate the philosophy, "I think, therefore I am." It makes sense to me, though it's still questionable as to whether a person lacking all five senses would be able to come up with this one.

I think you would probably die if you didnt have any of those senses. It would be like being in an acomma or something... They wouldnt be able to speak or express any needs... How would you feed someone who couldnt feel, smell or taste the food... They will most likely choke since they wouldnt know how to swallow. Probably wouldnt know how to breathe either since they cant feel the air they breathe, they might just stop... I hope no one tries to raise someone like this...

If a person was born without the five senses I don't think they would know what living is in the first place. Without those senses to use a persons brain isn't able to gather information about our surrounds and wouldn't know what existence is.

I would not know about that and I can not see how exactly you would be aware of anything like that at all. I guess you could somehow without even realizing it.

Hello soulsister_16,thanks for your intersting post.Firstly I have a question.Everynight you go to bed for a sleep you know or aware that you are alive. But when you fall in deep sleep everynight during that time do you know/aware that you are alive yourself? Do you need to use your five senses when you are in deep sleep? there is a similar medical condition that you must have heard that we call Coma.God has gifted humanbeings with six senses and not five but most of the humanbeings use or have knowledges to use five senses to experience life on earth but, maybe there are few people on earth like spiritual yogis who intentionally dont use the five senses all the time, rather use the sixth sense most of the time in 24hrs to experience God, cause they believe life on earth is maya or illusion and the purpose to take birth as humanbeing in this world is an oppertunity to experience God/Creation, through higher meditation level and they request God for mukti or moksha ie nomore life or rebirth and to excuse his soul from continous recycle of life/birth on this earth.

Thank you for your informative response, humbleme. Yes, I have heard of the sixth sense before but the information I keep on finding about it is a bit clouded. So thank you for shedding some light into this matter.

Do you mean born without either of the five senses? If so I believe we would be like a vegetable. I don't think we would be able to express or understand anything.
