Fruit shopping

Yesterday I went shopping at Walmart for groceries. I usually go to Meijer, who has a nice selection of produce. Well Walmart doesn't!! They didn't even have any romaine lettuce and I wanted a salad SO BAD. I had to buy the stuff in the bags which is overpriced and not as good :( Their plums and peaches were tiny and too soft.. I did buy a few kiwis and raspberries though. I hate when I go to the store and get my hopes up to buy something that they don't have :o

Walmart is way too high priced to shop also. This is why there vegetables aren't so fresh. They sit out to long.Probably why the lettuce was gone.It went bad.I went out to get bananas so I could make a banana split and save-a-lot didn't have any.I was so mad. When I asked what happened to them. The cashier told me they were getting ready for inventory and put them in the back to be counted. So I asked her if she could get someone to get one for me and she said "no"."It will mess up the count."
If you have a Box-n-save around you try them. They have very fresh veggies and great prices.

Thats weird with the prices.Walmart I think is high.save-a-lot is very cheep here. And the produce is always fresh.Mac-n-cheese is 4 for a dollar and sliced bread is only 79 cents.Hum ver odd.

We don't have any Box-n-saves around here :\ We have a Sav-a-lot, but it is really small and they only have a few kinds of produce. It is expensive, too and not very good. Meijer usually has a very good selection, I just happened to try Walmart yesterday. Walmart's prices are the cheapest around here (not the produce though dangit)

I have to agree with you Walmart's produce isn't that great. Kroger's produce tends to be better. The best produce that I have found is to be at Aldis. I don't know if you have one of those in your area. Not only is it better produce, usually cheaper priced too!

I have never heard of Aldis. We have a Kroger, Meijer, and Ric's. Ric's is nice, but much more expensive so I usually don't shop there.

Oh, I agree. Meijer is part of the Kroger group, I believe, and their produce is always better than Wal Mart. I usually find stuff that is pretty good at Wal Mart, but a lot of things are prepackaged, less chance to look it over. I will buy frozen fruits, at either place. Sometimes that is a better choice than fresh. I have clementines right now that I got from Wal Mart at a good price this week.

I hate WalMart's produce! Every time I buy some I am disappointed. They have no taste or they are too old. I end up having to go to a Kroger or HEB grocery store for fresh fruit. We dont have a produce stand near here so we are stuck.

This is the first time I have ever bought produce from Walmart, and I don't plan to again.

That sucks. My local Wal-Mart superstore has a really good produce section. Lots of stuff to choose from. They even carry a few things that I've never seen at my local grocery stores. I hate buying the bags of lettuce. They're overpriced everywhere, I've noticed.

I'm surprised. We have a couple super Wal-Marts and their produce is comparable to the other grocery stores.
Produce is a chancy buy though. sometime I go to the Giant Eagle and it's so poorly stocked that you wonder if it is a grocery store at all.
All of us ave an expectation interest. It's a psychological thing bout humans. Anytime that expectation interest is disappointed, we feel it.
I know at times I have a taste for something, such as the stuffed french toast at King's. It's like my taste buds control me. That's what I think about. And, if they don't have it, my taste buds get all funky. I feel deflated like a baloon undone.

Oh I know. Seems like that as well. I go looking for a certain fruit, Walmart really doesn't have a good selections. There oranges are over priced and small. For awhile, Aldi had fruit at a really good price. It's hard to find fruits and veggies that are still good in stores. I also hate when I go one day to get something and prices are low, then go again the next day and the prices went up. That makes it even worse when the produce is already small.

Argh- I never shop at Wal-Mart for fruit- they just don’t have a good selection- and it’s not the best- I will gladly pay extra for better quality and better tasting fruit and veggies- I shop a lot of farmers markets and fruit stands- I agree- I hate having my belly set on one thing and having to go another way because I refuse to buy it-

I don't remember the website name, but there is an entire flickr site devoted to rotting produce at Walmart.
personally, I never shop at walmart. They support offshore countries with appaling labor laws. Their whole deal is low prices, but their quality stinks, and you discovered that with their produce.
My philosophy for produce is BUY LOCAL. Go to the farmer's market, I know there is one in your area. (I'm from Michigan too) Buy local produce - it is fresher, it doens't have to travel far to get to you, this losing freshness on the way, and they don't have to use preservatives to get it to you. Buy local.

My boyfriend won't shop at Walmart either, and hates when I do :\ But sometimes when I need something and am strapped for cash, it is the cheapest. I will look for a local Farmer's Market. I know there are produce stands out on occasion here.

Over here we have open market once a week where they sell all kinds of fresh fruits and vegetables direct from the farm. The prices are much cheaper than those in supermarkets. I prefer to shop here as I can get good bargain. Yes sometimes it is frustrating to shop where they are not well stocked.

Wow! I haven't heard of Meijer's in years. you must live in the Michigan or Ohio states. Meijer's really does have a great produce selection, whereas Walmart has a very bad produce section. I tend to visit the Farmers Markets or produce markets here where I live because Walmarts produce isn't up to par.

My supermarket very close to me has fairly good produce..but not great..If I'm not feeling too lazy--LOL--I'll walk to a supermarket (no car) to this other one that is quite a distance away...We have so many nice veg and fruit shops nearby too, but I can't take advantage of them and get their food as they don't accept food stamps which I'm on...drat...

Today I went to a new Market in town. It is colored on the outside Purple/yellow/ and Red. It looks like a casino from the outside. The market is huge it took my friends and I an hour and a half to walk through it. It has lots of great produce, fresh fish, live catfish, sturgeon, and another fish I cannot remember these fish are in the meat department. You pick the fish you want and they kill it and filet for you. They have so many types of meat, they have ground pork, the ground pork was shaped like a pig face with carrots for the eyes, nose, and inside of the ears. It was so cute. You would have loved this store.

Lol that sounds like a fun store. I wouldn't want to see them killing any fish though :( I don't eat fish anyway so I guess it's all good.

I usually to to Meijer also. I think that the Meijer by my house has really good produce. We just got a new Walmart supercenter and I have not really looked through their produce section yet because I am happy with Meijer. I do hate it when I want something and when I get to the store it is not there.

I shop at Walmart a lot too. Their produce isn't great. Unfortunately none of the other stores in our area have great produce either. I usually get mine from a produce stand but their selection is limited. If I want something unusual I have to drive about 80 miles away to get it.

I don't know anything about Meijer stores,i have never been to one,in fact i don't even know if we have them here.We have an awesome walmart where i live here in the Houston texas area, but of course Walmart is one of the most famous shopping stores around this area..I think walmart should try to be better in other area's also because they are excellent here.We also have Feista stores that have great produce and also Heb isn't too bad...We have the super Walmart stores here..I do understand what you mean about getting your hopes up and get there and thaey have zero good produce though...We also have a large variety of fruit stands here also...

Yes, the quality of fruit and vegetables varies a great deal from shop to shop. I like to buy a fully prepared salad that includes washed and ready to eat iceberg lettuce, carrot and red cabbage. Sometimes I also like to buy a delicious looking bunch of carrots with their tops still on. I like to eat strawberries and raspberries but often they are not very good in appearance or taste.
