What is the one natural disaster that really scares you to think about?

Although I love the ocean and I'm a good swimmer I am petrified at the thoughts of a tidal wave ever occurring here. I live about a mile from the Atlantic ocean and I've seen it get to points that have seriously scared me. Whenever one happens somewhere you can't help but see the aftermath on the news and it's so frightening to me.
I've lived through a few hurricanes and a couple of earth quakes having lived in California and they were really not very big ones so nothing horrible came of them.
What one natural disaster really scares you? Have you actually experienced it or are you just afraid of it the way I am?

Where I live there really aren't any real NATURAL disasters to worry about.
Too far inland to worry about hurricanes (though I have been through them other places). Same thing for tsunamis.
No faults for earthquakes (I have lived through those too other places).
Floods, I am on high ground with deep washes to that is not a worry.
Fire, little or no ground cover to support a wildfire.
Tornados, not in an area where they naturally occur, they are extremely rare in this region.
I guess the only NATURAL disaster I need wot worry about would be a meteor strike. Small ones do come down around here regularly and a large one would affect a HUGE area.
I think, I'll just go back to worrying about the MAN-MADE disasters instead. There are more of them; and, they are more likely to happen.

I agree with you on that one! No matter where we live it's the man made disasters that we REALLY have to worry about.

I have to agree with this. Man-made disasters make me worry much more than natural ones. Man-made disasters ranging from poor city planning to war and nuclear events, thats what I am talking about. I of course sympathize with those that have been involved in natural disasters (most recently the Peru earthquake). Other than man-made disasters I do worry at times about space-born disasters (i.e. meteorite impact). I know the odds, but still, one only has to look at nearby planets/planet bodies just to have a fair understanding of why I consider it. Or take a good look at the chicxulub crater.

My biggest natural fear is Tornadoes. Man a storm comes rolling in and the sweat starts popping out all over. I am a nut during this time. What makes it worse is I live on a slab with no basement, so if one did hit there is no where to run. I know a few people have told me to get in to the tub but, um…. it's fiberglass and all that is going to do is give me a good lift off, LOL.
I had this fear since I was kid for no real reason. Then a couple of years ago I got my reason. A bad storm was moving in and I had already made plans of getting the kids and hubby and going to my Mom's, who has a basement. Well it would have worked out if hubby had not took his time in getting ready to go, old Mr. I don't panic. Well no sooner than we hit the high way, BOOM, it's no top of us. We are stuck in the car on a highway in the middle of one of the worse storms I have ever seen. Lighting, thunder, strong winds, the whole nine yards. Then about a half mile in front of us going across the road there is a Tornado! OMG! Hubby slams on the breaks, no fear of being rear ended cause we are the only fools on the highway at this time, and he does a doughnut right there. Well he gets off the road and we are flying down side streets and the rain and hail are hitting the glass so darn hard I can't see a thing. Finally he came across a street I knew so I had him turn down it. I seen a house I was just at for Bunko a week prior to this and we pulled in the drive way and we jumped out with the kids and run up and beat the fire out of this lady’s door I had only known no more than 7 days. Well it turned out it was a good thing we beat on that door that hard, they were in the basement cause the sirens were sounding and they admitted they would not have heard us. So anyway her husband opens the door and didn't say nothing but "Hurry!" and we all rain in to his house and in the basement, where we stayed until the storm passed.
Now I have reason for having my fear, LOL. To see a Tornado on TV is one thing, it is completely different when it smack dab in front of you and you have not place to run to. :o(

Don't you know he actually did pick up his speed for awhile after that, but now he is right back to his old, "don't worry about anything ways". That's ok next time I am driving and he can come with us or catch up to us, LOL.

I sincerely hope that in the back of his subconciousness he panicked and will not do this again. Your lives must have flashed before your eyes a lot of times saying this was my life! Thank God youa re all safe

I would have to say tornado's, volcanoes and earthquakes. I live in middle Tennesee and just a few years ago, our state was placed in Tornado Alley. With our lovely heat wave that we been having, I'm afraid that the next huge storm will be a bad one. We went through a heat wave before that wasn't as bad as the one we are having and the storm that came after was bad but thank goodness no tornado. Honestly though, I'm hoping that the storm that's charging towards the gulf will be small and come up towards us. Last time I actually experienced a tornado, I was a young child. A really bad storm came up fast one night while I was doing my homework. My dad came in my room to tell me it's time to go to our safe spot which was our living room, lol. By the time I sat down, I saw a flash of light and I saw this small tornado going the other direction from our house.
With earthquakes, I learned that if a major one goes off again around Memphis, we will feel it. Back in the 1800's that area had 3 in 1-2 years and it was felt all the way up to Chicago to Virgina. So that is scarey, because I never delt with a earthquake. Very freaky also with the fact that another big one can hit at any moment.
The underground volcano at Yellowstone freaks me out. It could go off at any moment as well. To top it off there's more underground volcanoes scattered around the world.
These three scare me the most is that they happen all the sudden and you really have no time to get away, especially with no proper warning.

Hurricanes. Jamaica is currently under hurricane watch from Dean and I hate it when these things happen. You lose your light and water and boy life is so miserable. I normally pray and askt God to help us especially whenI remember the homeless people. They are the msot needy at this time and people who lose their homes and have a hard time rebuilding. Hurricanes are my problems

Well I was on the internet this morning and some called this hurricane Mean Dean. At the moment of this entry it had build up to a category 4. I am still praying because I believe that Jamaica cannnot take a hit like this just before our general elections too.

I think a tornado would worry me more than anything, though we do not get them very often. My neighbor survived a tornado and said it was one of the scariest things she has been through as it ripped her building up pretty good and one person got flown in the air by it. Hurricanes do not happen here very often nor other disasters. A huge snowstorm could be worrisome as well.

For me it would be a raging forest fire. We live in the mountains surrounded by woods and trees. We try and keep the brush back and maintain. But other property owners don't that are around us. Some live in other states and rarely come here. The brush on their property is thick and it is tinder dry right now. I pray to God to keep us safe and do the best we can to maintain our own property which with my husband nearing sixty and me too we are finding it hard to do. Next Spring we plan to fence and cross fence some areas, Get about four weiner pigs as they root brush out and some goats to keep it back. We have to build some enclosed buildings though for night time as we have cougar and bear that will come and kill them at night. We lost our goats we had to a cougar.

I think that tornados look like the scariest to me. I mean they just randomly come out of nowhere and twist and spin around, and get bigger and bigger! And you have no idea where they are heading, and there is no way to predict. I have never seen one except in the movies, and I hope I never do!

I guess I have a fear of all natural disasters -- I've experienced hurricanes in Texas, earthquakes in California, and blizzards in Michigan. I think the most common has been tornadoes - many times I've seen the damage these can do, the lives lost, and been blessed to escape unharmed personally.

I don't mean to scare you, but I feel obliged to inform you about something I saw on the National Geographic Channel: There is a fissured, unstable volcano near Spain named Cumbre Viejo. If and when it erupts, the entire western half of the volcano could sink into the ocean, creating a super tsunami. It would reach the United States within a couple of hours and would devastate the entire eastern seaboard. The 2004 Asian Tsunami would pale in comparison.
Whether you believe in this or not is up to you. Just wanted to share the info.

Up here in Minnesota it is a tornado that petrifies me. It is so terribly destructive and leaves everything flattened. That would be what I am most afraid of. I have actually been through a tornado. It's scared the beegeevers out of me.

Hello!
When I'm in Philippines, I always feared that one day, one of the active volcanoes near our city would errupt and I dunno what would happen. Especially everytime I hear news about some volcanoes active and errupting in some parts of our country. Its just heartbreaking, the after effects of it. Now, being here in Bahrain I'm frightened about what if a tidal wave would happen. Bahrain is a small island, and they're expanding it, building new islands. Everywhere you go here, you could see the sea. I fear that if such disaster would happen, it would really erase Bahrain in the map of the world *bit exaggerated no?..smiles* worst is i'm not a good swimmer! *smiless*. I reckon it's normal to be scared especially of the things you have no control of. Take care.
cheers! :D

I agree with some of the other responses. MAN MADE disasters are the ones i fear the most (GLOBAL WARMING). A natural disaster that i fear is severe storms. I hope that i am never caught in the middle of one.

Natural disasters are unpredictable and are inevitable. No one can say where or when a natural disaster strike. In fact, even with the high-tech machines that we have now cannot predict weather conditions, they only detect. And what's sad is, Man continue to be ignorrant of their actions, or are they just pretending to be ignorrant for self-interest? Man is so selfish, they seek for power. They never felt contented with what they have, instead it gives them greater urge. Only if they recognize and understand what spiderman said - "With great power comes great responsibilities".
