Sometimes I dither about buying new books, but then I consider how cheap books are compared to say, ameal out or a film, look at how many hours pleasure you get for your money. Its not expensive at all really.
Its even cheaper to buy books second hand, and its free to borrow them from the library, but as far as luxuries go most books are very cheap looked at over the number of hours they give you enjoyment for compared to other items.
What do you think?

I love books and try to buy and then keep copies of my favorite books. I often visit my local library to choose novels and non fiction books. I like to read about travel most of all. When I do buy books I look for discounted copies or second hand copies that are in good condition on the Internet. Once I was shopping in a up market type of second hand book shop. I found an expensive first edition of the favorite story i had when I was a child. Good books give me hours of enjoyment. I studied literature at university as part of my teacher training. Books that I disliked on my first reading I learned to appreciate on my second reading. These days I mostly read what I like.

Supermarkets are getting to be very cheap for books, I agree with that. From the flip side though, the authors get almost nothing from thse deals, but I suppose the increased sales volume does help make up for that. I'm all for any strategy that makes books more affordable though.

While books ARE rather expensive I tend to buy books I know I'll refer back to often.
I use the library for EVERYTHING - *laughing* Research for articles, entertainment for my kids, fluff novels, education, etc.
Often I'll get interested in a subject and request half a dozen or more books on the subject. The one or two that interest me the most, or provide the most information, I will purchase.
I usually try to avoid buying books from Wal-mart or supermarkets becuase I LIKE supporting bookstores. The selection is much wider, the quality of the book is usually better, and I LOVE walking into the store and being surrounded by so many book! Wonderful!

Yes, I do think they are terribly expensive.
I seldom buy them. Instead of buying a book, I can go for a nice restaurant meal here.
I borrow most of the books I read. Since I read so much, it makes the most sense.

Yes, I do think that books are very expensive now. I remember that books used to be very cheap when I was a kid. Now the price for almost everything is getting higher and higher. I prefer to just borrow books from the libraries or just exchange books with friends so that we don't have to consume so much in buying books and later keep them in the book cupboard and we can save more raw materials from the nature.

There are some half price book stores around where I live. I don't see the point in spending $8 on a never been used novel when I can buy a slightly used one for $4. Libraries are a great place to get books since you don't have to pay for them, but unfortunately for me they don't have the most current books the I want to read.

i think books and movies are too expensive. i go to the library or garage sales. i love to read, and i can wait for the movie to go on pay per view or find it at a garage sale,.there are so many books to read-i don't have to be the first in line to get one....i wait.

Yes, books - even new, hardcover editions - are much less expensive than, say, seeing a concert or play...and sometimes even seeing a movie.
That said, we don't do any of those things on a regular basis! Virtually all the books we buy are secondhand - we'll occaissionally hold out for technical/how-to type books at full price if they're impossible to find otherwise.
Also, if you're looking at entertainment in terms of dollar value for time, I find hand work - even that which requires expensive materials - is almost always the best value! :) And while I enjoy knitting, lacemaking, spinning, etc. even my husband has projects he enjoys - in particular, turning garage-saled old files into period-style knives and daggers. :)
Oh - and on the subject of books, if we're buying new we try to wait until we're in the US. The Canadian dollar is so close right now that Canadian book prices are robbery compared with US prices!

Books are expensive compared to what they used to be. I find that I have to chose them more carefully. It is not right just to read one through and that is that. Because of their cost, that is a waste of time. So we have to buy books where we can go back to and read again more than once or twice. The trouble is the time. Right now I am going through one book and can only read a few pages a day. It was a Christmas gift. Most of what I got I bought years ago, and the others, were either gifts or from a subscription my husband got from the Readers Digest Classics. Since I have so much to read already, I do not need to buy any second hand and the library here is too far away.

You're correct.I think the books especially the pop books related to romance for girls are expensive. To be honest,I seldom buy this kind of book coz they are cliche and the storys themselves are tiresome. But some of my friends are bigs fans of this kind of book.So I have to buy the boring books as the birthday gifts for them.
To my surprise, the price of these romance books are expensive. For example,a book with 300 pages and the price is 28RMB.I don't think it is worthy.

I must admit to being a penny-pinching book-addict as well! Craft books, needlework books, sewing books, papercraft books, greeting card books, BOOK books because I make books!!
I love the library, tho its hard for me to get there at times. When we have our town celebrations, our library always has a big sale just down the street, and I go to those.
I am able to spend HOURS in the HalfPrice books store in our area, and its great fun to go with my best friend.
But because I have limitations, I buy most of my books from half.com... reasonable prices, you can 'shop around' for the best deal, and the shipping isn't bad!! They're great for music, too!!

yes you are right... books are the cheapest entertainment compare to others such as movies or dining out... and the most important thing is the knowledge that you get by reading the books... that will stay in your brain forever and nobody can ever steal it away from you... i like to read and i think books are very invaluable...

I think with the modern technology, more people turn to the internet rather than reading books because all the information are readily available on the internet. However there are really some books that is in a specific genre that you cannot find on the internet that's why you have to buy them.

I think not. Because if you want a cheap book, you can buy the pocket edition.
All books with quality are avalaible in normal edition, but the pocket edition is not bad idea, the difference is the quality of the paper, but the book is the same.
I think, who want, also can, books are not expensive.
