Are you a good cook?

I'm not, I'm terrible at it. Not that I don't try, but my family has requested that I not cook any more! Ha ha, but that's almost true. My daughter wants me to come home (after working all night) and cook her pancakes. I told her I'd buy her some from someone who knew how to make them so much better than I did. Is that wrong? But really, I am an awful cook and burn almost everything I try.

I am a pretty good cook. the sad thing is I like what I cook and my waistline shows it! It is not wrong for what you are doing. You want to provide her with her favorite things, but you know your limitations right now and that is a good solution. that is very creative of you! Now, they also have those instant pancakes that are premade and you just pop them in the microwave and they taste pretty good. they are in your freezer section in the breakfast items. Check those out too!

The problem is she eats those once or twice then gets tired of them. We have a freezer full of boxes half-full of corn dogs, waffles, etc. That's where my waistline begins to suffer! Someone's got to eat that stuff.

I do understand about finicky tastes with kids. My daughter goes into phases with liking things and then shortly after I buy them she will not want them anymore. LOL, I think it is just the fact that they are readily available and they know they can have it anytime they want it.

I can cook pancakes, but I can't cook anything else. I can bake but I can't cook. The best thing i can do for dinner is choose which restaurant or which frozen dinner to have.Suggestion. There are some good pancake mixes out there where all you have to do is add water. I use Bisquick. With it all you have to do is add eggs and water or milk and you have pancake batter. It is something you can do in the morning, put in the fridge and make pancakes when you get in.

Why is it, some people can bake but they can't cook and vice versa? I can't do either.

Well with me I never learned to cook. All the dishes I liked either were from a take out restaurant or my mom made them. But why do some people can cook but can't bake?I got a hint fro Rachael Rey.She can cook but can't bake. The way she cooks, it is all in the moment, it isn't planned. She uses what she has and she just puts the ingredients together and she has her meals. But with baking, everything has to be put together the same way every time. That is what I like about it. You have to measure everything out,add it in the same way , every time. This would drive Rachael crazy.Just like using whatever and adding it and making dinner with whatever you have would drive me crazy. So I guess if you are a person who likes things the same way every time, bake. But if you like to be creative and make things differently each time, cook.

I don't particularly enjoy cooking myself, especially during hot weather and if I have to do everything (slicing, peeling, washing, etc.). But then if your cooking turns out good, you could feel proud and happy you've pleased the people you've cooked for. I just keep trying!

I think that's a big part of it. I don't enjoy cooking. I'd much rather do something else, then I forget about the food, and it burns, .....

Same here ... burnt food or overflowed soup. A kitchen timer helps (if I don't forget to set it!).

Hi DJ, you know, when I was younger, I was such a bad cook, I think I could have even managed to burn water. But, do you know what my first real job was??? A COOK! I'm not kidding you! Somehow I managed not to kill anyone for the year that I worked there. :) I think the best way to learn is just keep practicing. I usually make pancakes on a low heat, and add enough oil to the pan to keep them from sticking. Also, don't add the batter until the oil is hot. OK, that said, is there a local college nearby that may offer cooking classes? I suppose if there isn't, keep posting questions here on mylot. There are so many great people here that have a wealth of knowledge. I'm sure somehow we'll get you trained.

The funny thing is, I really don't have any interest in getting better! Is that really bad of me? Of all the things I would like to learn how to do, cooking has got to be at the bottom of my list. But when my daughter asks me to make her something specifically, I feel bad when I can't (or don't want to) do it.

I'm not a good cook and I don't like to cook but I have to cook anyway if I want to live because sometimes I live alone and so it's a necessity. I'm good only at making some kinds of sauce for pasta...

I'm definitely an 'eat to live' person, and most definitely a 'cook to live' person! I just do what is absolutely necessary and leave the fancy stuff to people who like it and know how.

Well I look at it like this, I haven't killed anyone yet, LOL. No I am not a good cook and I think it's because I hate to cook. So I want in there and out of there as fast as possible.

I don't really like cooking, but I've been trying to do more of it lately. I would say I'm an average cook. I can make most things I feel like trying, and my family usually eats them. I just don't think it's fun. In order to motivate myself to get in the kitchen and get it done, I have to keep reminding myself how much healthier it is to give my family a home cooked meal. I do serve things from boxes and cans sometimes, but I really try to give them real home cooked food most of the time, at least for dinner! Breakfast and lunch are a different story, though! lol

One thing is that we have such a wierd schedule. My husband goes to work at 7 am, my daughter goes to school at 12:30 pm, and I go to work at 7 pm (at night). So my breakfast is their dinner, etc.

I'm not excellent nor terrible at cooking, I must say I'm just an average cook but I do enjoy it a lot. If you want to learn you can still try, it is really up to you. Practice makes perfect or just makes you better =)

I think nothing wrong as you think that you want to give a tasty pancake from someone who could do it rightly.I feel its always better to buy any particular food itme from outside rather than to test it ourselves in preparing it and ending up wrongly. I am not a bad cook.I can cook to some extent as i dont do cooking regularly as my mom does it for all of us.when sometimes my mom is really unwell i do the cooking but my home people are so good as they manage to eat my dishes and finalyl say it taste good.

Hehe--I certainly didn't learn how to cook from my mother or grandmother...if they could they would have burned water..LOL--I must inherit my skills from my great-grandmother..she was THE cook of the house and did every kind of cuisine going...It wasn't shortly after I graduated college that I really got into cooking...French food no less! I had been inspired I guess from a French cook that was just starting to get popular here in America at the time, Jacques Pepin--so I tried my hand at it...and found I loved cooking...I not only do French cooking, but Italian, Oriental, and Mexican...but lets put it this way...if it's food, I'll cook it no matter what the nationality...and I do everything homemade from scratch...--but I do have to admit...sometimes I'm just plain lazy and will fix myself a "real" gourmet meal...hot dogs and beans LOL

I think you have to love it - or at least like it - to cook well. I just really don't enjoy it, for me its a chore.

I don't think I'm a natural at this. Its funny to find this discussion because my husband is considering dropping Space Studies to go to a school for culinary arts - he's poring over the course book now. That would have great benefits for me! He cooks for us on the weekends, otherwise I just find my own way.

i guess i am OK... my family appreciates my cooking - there are some dishes that goes well in their book. i wouldnt say i looovvvvveeeeee cooking, it's like someone wrote earlier - it just came outta necessity. i had studied abroad where the food are quite different from my own - so i had to learn how to cook my own meals most of the time, and also to sometimes feed my fellow countrymen and friends that went to the same college as me. when i got married and have children of my own... i cook because i worry about their diet, the quality of food we get if we dine out.... plus... it hurts my purse strings if we eat out toooo much ! i dun necessarily cook according to the recipes, either. like i mentioned earlier - i started to cook only when i was abroad studying - where most times i have to be flexible with the ingredients, because at times they cant be found in my host country. i continue to do that even now... i simply 'throw' things into my cooking - making do with i have at that time.... which scares my mom-in-law a lot. dun worry - i dun intend to throw in any poison and kill anyone, thou... why dont electrical gadgets then... those with timers! or microwave ? you simply prepare the ingredients put them in the pot or dish and put the timer on to the required time... i dun think you'll burn stuff that way. Good luck... take care... happy cooking :-}

My husband is that way - he just throws things in the pot. If I'm following the recipe, I have to have everything just right, and even then its a toss up as to what comes out of my oven.

I am a terrible cook as well and don't enjoy cooking but I do for our family ( they are used to my cooking lol ) . I know how to make all the normal meals with meat and potatoes but can't make anything new . I have tried but it never seems to come out like everyone else's and then I am upset with the waste of time even if my family says it taste alright because I am disgusted with myself . The only time I don't mind to cook is for Christmas dinner as everyone in the family and all of our friends like my ham dinner because they like how I make my ham so I don't mind doing this as I know it is something that even I can't ruin lol . I don't think it is wrong of you to order pancakes for your daughter . You are tired and don't feel you are going to do a good job and if you are like me , just not comfortable doing it . I can't see how your daughter would mind either as it shouldn't matter as long as she has something to eat .

That was the main thing - I was tired. If she wanted to make pancakes some other time, I'd give it a try. As to Christmas dinner - I'm forbidden to try! Its a long story involving a turkey and the plastic bag of stuff inside.... Not a pretty picture!

I am a good cook. But 6 years ago when my husband and I married I was ok but it was a lobor of love really. I think to improve you start simple. Broil a steak, lighly flour ( dont use any egg)a chicken tenderloin and sautee it, be sure to slt and pepper everything lightly. One of my first cookbooks was a Fanny Farmer cook book, it is avery old fashioned cook book and there are new editions every year, but it is all very simple recipes, with many variations on themes, there are even pankcake recipes!! I dont think its wrong to buy your food from outside and bring it home if you think she will enjoy them better, but, if you buy the cookbook and make them together, you could build nice memories and you will be helping her build a valuable skill anf toll for living!

im a good cook but sadly my baking skills are awful. dont be so hard on yourself everyone burns food or something goes wrong once in awhile. dont give up on cooking, i suggest maybe watching food tv and a good cook book should help. even if your cooking is awful at least you try and you put your heart and soul in it that is what is important. good luck
