Are you surprised that microwave popcorn has been tied to lung disease?
Will the doctor's warning change your popcorn-eating habits?

This is old, I remember reading this years back. I probably won't change my eating habits on popcorn, since I don't even eat it in a blue moon (yes its that rare for me to have popcorn). But when I get the chance to have it, I'm just gonna enjoy it. Especially since plenty of current medical studies denounce virtually everything in life as "unhealthy" in one way or another.

We have a popcorn plant close to us and I have heard that the employees were getting sick from it. I did not realize that it could also make you sick just eating it. Everyone I had talked to said it was from the dust in the plant. I haven't eaten it so much since.

Not at all.
I was well aware that it was a problem for the people who work in the plants and package it.
I had even heard that some movie theatre's that use the "artificial butter flavoring" instead of real butter; had developed lung problems attributed to it.
So, it is not surprising that a person who OVER eats prepackage microwave popcorn with ARTIFICIAL butter flavoring would end up developing health problems.
This will not change my "popcorn eating habits" in the least; becaseu I don't use the "artifical" garbage anyway and I would never eat the quantities of popcorn that this person was eating (THREE BAGS a day, EVERY day).

This is rather interesting. I never really considered what goes into our foods until rather recently. It's scary that the things they use to make our food, just really ends up harming us in one way or the other. It's things like this that really make me want to consider a fresher food diet than the one I currently have. However, I don't think I'd end up staying away from popcorn, I mean, I barely microwave the stuff as it is. I think I'll just become more aware of what I'm eating and try to stay away from the stuff that I know could potentially be harmful.

I guess that I will not be eating microwave popcorn anymore after hearing this news. I do not eat popcorn very often but had some last night. Anything that we enjoy eating seems to be bad for our health. Things that we do not like are the foods that are good for us. They need to find a way to reverse that theory. :-)

I can breathe easier. I never did like popcorn, unless it was that Nutty Club with all the fixings, candied up and all that. I thought people made popcorn because they were too cheap to make chocolate chip, oatmeal, or peanut butter cookies or could not afford to go and pick up a bag of potato chips or tacos. But I suppose you have to take this with a grain of salt. If someone puts their nose or mouth over the ventilation system of the microwave and breathe in the fumes, of course, they are going to get lung disease. Go figure.

Not sure about it. It does say the ingredient in the butter is approved so I wonder if there is another reason for the sickness. I don't know anyone who eats buttered popcorn everyday but I think it's not that common for people here to do.

I've been hearing about this for a while now. I love butter flavored popcorn. It seems that just about everything is bad for you these days. One thing the researchers don't really elaborate on is just how much is too much. Research on things is done on rats. Anything given in large doses to a rat is a possible danger. This is yet another thing in a long list of conveniences of modern life that may not be so convenient. I'll keep eating popcorn. Maybe I'll use a face mask when opening the bag?

I don't eat butter flavored popcorn but I do eat lite microwave popcorn. I won't until I am sure all is OK. I don't need it and I don't need an unnecessary health risk. When the final word is out, I will eat it or not.
If it was something I LOVED, I probably wouldn't change my habits or would change to no butter (like I already eat) and add my own but popcorn is no big deal to me so I won't eat it for now.
Of course, everything gives you something and, if I didn't eat or drink everything that has been linked to some disease, I'd starve or dehydrate (she says as she drinks her diet Pepsi that is worse for her than microwave popcorn).

It's not like I go around whiffing popcorn bags all day. The fact is anything has the potential to kill us,thats why there are choking hazard warnings on almost everything, we just gotta deal with it.

Reading the story provided in the link, I have just struck out microwave popcorn from the list of items that I should avoid. These days, it seems that with more research and findings revealed, a growing list of food that people enjoy end up being harmful to health. Very soon, life will be miserable when what we can eat healthily becomes rather limited..LOL. Fortunately, I am not that much affected by the news about the popcorn, because I seldom eat this and can avoid it altogether if necessary.

The key phrase here is "several times a day for years." Too much of anything is harmful. You could die of nicotene poisoning by eating tomatoes. What's the catch? You'd have to eat about 30,000 of them in a very short time. If you eat microwave popcorn once or twice a week I wouldn't panic the next time you get a cough.
