This is going to be one of the those discussion that I start and I don't know where I'll end up. I do that a lot.
I'm not sure if I'm venting, blogging, looking for advice, sympathy, or what?
I'm just typing.
I've been a stay at home mom for the greater part of the last 11 years. I say "the great part" because I did work part time for about two years when my sone started kindergarten. Then I got a real estate license and quite my "job" at the (real estate) office that I was working at and tried my hand as a Realtor. I had a few successes, but have determined that I haven't wanted to do the things required to become a successful real estate agent. At least not for now.
So, last December I started searching for info in Work at home Jobs. I didn't find anything that suited me.
December turned to May and then school was about over and I decided I'd continue staying home with my gets until summer was over.
I've begun the job search again. I'm looking for a part time job. It doesn't matter if it's work at home or away from home. As long as I can drop my kids off at school and pick them up when they are done.
I've been sending out letters and resumes on and off for a couple of weeks now. I haven't found anything yet.
I think I have decent job skills. I've never had this much trouble finding a job before.
Have any of you ever had trouble finding the job your looking for?

The State of Florida runs One Stop Service Centers all over the state. It is a State of Fl agency, so you can find it in the Government pages of the phone book. They have tons of local job listings and counselors who can help you match up your skills to available jobs.
As well as resume polishing advice, getting back into the workforce advice, etc.
It's free, it's for any resident of the State of Florida and it just may be what you need! Good luck and let me know how it goes, ok?

Well this is kind of a cheat cos I have read your post about getting a job so I have the benefit of foresight! lol I know it isn't easy when you have kids to think of - I am lucky as when I am still fit to work my bosses are very good at fitting my shifts around my other halfs so that I don't have to worry about childcare! You definitely have the right idea sweetheart - the kids come first! xxx

I've been looking but not having any luck. It doesn't help that I can't go much more than half a mile away (since I have to walk wherever I'm going) and would only be able to work M-Th 9-2 with no nights, weekends or school holidays. At this I'll take anything.

Well I am trying to find a better job. The job I'm at now is okay, but I always strive for the better. At least I'm honing my professional skills so my chances of landing it are better.

Good morning, I believe you are thinking in the right direction, but perhaps looking in the wrong area. there are a lot of jobs that are done from the home, the biggest one I can think of is where you transcribe meetings. and also I have heard about are medical transcription, as well as legal transcription. Now how you get these jobs is something I can not tell you but there must be ways and means of doing so. Also keep in mind a lot of offices are downsizing to smaller physical offices and use remote workers, I am almost sure the real estate industry does that exact thing. the same as a notary republic. Bookkeeping services,And here is another services to visit the elderly to keep company for say a hour or hour and a half.there are a lot of distant family's that would be willing to pay good money for you to visit and check on an elderly parent, Think out of the box. If you like animals do day visits to pets that are left alone you just have to look at what you might want and then offer it out there.

I am at the stage where I am trying to figure out what job to take up. My son just started kindergarten and i thought to wait a little longer before i start looking for something. I need to redo and upgrade my cv as it doesn't include the last job I worked at a year and a bit ago. (I have only been a stay at home mom for a year and a half now). I wouldn't mind trying something new and like the clothing industry or working in a clothing store or homeware so I could get some decent benefits and discounts on stuff. I am not fussy on where I want to work but it will be only part time and something close to my son's school.

Boy! Have I had trouble finding a job! It isn't even the kind of job I want, but it's a paycheck.
I have 17 years medical experience. We moved and I figured I would have no trouble finding a job. WRONG!!! Every doctors' office and hospital in the county had a copy of my resume. Every one. No hits.
We had to move back to the large city that i absolutely HATE so I could work. My husband has to drive there to work anyway. I started looking Sept. 2006. It took us moving back and my using an employment agency to find a job. It took until June 2007.
The job I have is in medical collections. Now, I will argue with insurance companies all day long. No problem. I just don't have the heart to be ugly to patients. Right now it doesn't seem to be an issue. They have me doing retarded-monkey work anyway. I WANTED a job at a doctor's office. That's what I'm good at and what I enjoy. No luck yet...I'm not bilingual and I refuse to be.
So I'm still having trouble finding the job I'm looking for.

I love the job that I have now but would really like to find something a bit closer to home with different hours. In my search, I have found there is much less to choose from and none can match the pay I currently have. I have also looked for part time work off and on to supplement my income....There is even less to choose from. I see your dilema. One thing I can say that may help you is rather than mail the resumes, take a day or two to go around to different places and put the word out that you are looking for a job.
While you may be very qualified, so much time out of the work force may be inhibiting you at least on paper. My boss is currently trying to find help and I do know that he goes much more on his impression of the person when he meets them than their resume. There have been many with wonderful resumes that he just gets bad vibes from upon talking with them and visa versa. he is usually right.

Hi Miamilady,
I definately feel your pain! I have a degree in Medical Billing and Im unsuccessful in finding a position in this field. My situation is a bit complicated and Im not going to get into it, but I have even resorted to McDonalds and was not able to become employed there! I have many skills and a good work history, but cant seem to grab the attention of any employer. I would really enjoy getting a career in my chosen field, and Im sure that its all about location, location, location, and thats where my problems arise. I must admit I do enjoy staying home day after day and taking care of my husband and our home, but I want more responsibilty and a feeling of accomplishment from my day. As much as I like hanging out on myLot most of the morning I would much rather be at work! lol
Im still searching and will continue to search with much hope, I think you should do the same. I like to think this lack of response is just holding me in place for something more wonderful than Im expecting!

If I were you, I would identify the areas that I really want to work in or the job I really want to have. If you know what interests you the most, try and find a job in that area instead of taking just any job you might qualify for. If you loved real estate and working with people, then you would have been willing to make a go of it in that area. By the same token, when you find something you really want to sink your teeth into, then you will find it easier to stick with it until you are successful. I think that as long as you take any job just to have one, that is only a temporary solution and will not get you very far in the long run.

I owrked for the same company for over 22 years when I became unemplyed. Over 200 applications and 2 face to face interviews later. I took a job that pays way less then 1/2 of what I made before.
I have a Masters in Computer Science...but face it..I am old.
Good luck in your search.

Yup! For years I worked in Dr's offices or hospitals doing everything from medical records to billing and insurance filing to management. Now much of what I used to do you have to be "certified" to do. I have forgotten more than these people will ever know! Plus at my age I have discovered that places would rather hire a young person than someone over 50. I worked briefly in 2000 ask a night desk clerk at a local motel. I hated it. Then I sent out several dozen resumes to hospital and doctors for the type of jobs I used to do. I got 4 calls and no offers. Now that we need money I am trying again without much sucess. I really would like to work from home. Most of the good home jobs are call center types. Some of them require night or weekend work. I'm looking for some part time during the weekday times. I have applied at some but have not heard a peep. Good luk on your search.

I know that there are Telemarketing jobs that are available in some locations where you can work from home and use your own phone.
If you did RealEstate sales I'd think that you'd be adept at doing something along those lines.
You may want to contact Medical facilities and Insurance companies
to see what's available.

I find myself in the sam boat as you. I have babysat at home for friends for the past 9 years and I've been a sahm for almost 16 years. I began in July to look for a job outside of my home and have not had any luck yet. I've begun to wonder if it is the right thing to do, or if I should just find more kids to babysit, or apply for jobs that don't require are much skill. I have been looking for a receptionist/office clerk type job with no luck. I have not tried an employment agency. Have you? Just wondering if that might be the way to go. Well I'm rambling so I'll end.
Good Luck!
