Is Homeownership as great as you had expected it to be?

Do you enjoy being a homeowner? Do you have any regrets on buying your home? Do you wish you still rented an apartment or lived with your parents? I doing enjoy having a place of my own until something breaks down that requires repairs. :-) Having things repaired is expensive? Plus I just found out today that I need to have my townhouse repiped because the pipes that were originally used are banned/outlawed. It will cost over $5000. Ouch! Stuff like that makes me wish I rented an apartment.

That is a pretty rude thing to have happen for someone who just bought your town home! We have only bought new, so repairs take awhile to come about. We've lived in this house since 1980, and it could use another new paint job, new wallpaper inside, etc. But...when renting...your money seems to go nowhere.

OH Such a good question, yes I am so glad we bought it when we did because by the time we finish paying for it it will be
commercial property!! And it will be 3X as much and then I can get my house to retire on and live in for the rest of my long
life. I love my house and my garden. I love coming home and knowing that it is mine, all mine. Rent is a lot cheaper than
rent, if you don't include the utilities.

Hello kgwat70, I think homeownership is great as I expected it. I have a house of my own and free to do what I want with it. I don't have to worry about paying for the rent and rules that have to be followed.
Sometimes maintenance and improvements have to be done but this are all part of owning a house. Plus your the one whose gonna benefit from it anyways so I think its worth it. :-)

In general i would be in the same boat as you are. We had to replace a small section of concrete and it was over $1000... Yikes $5000 is alot, though if you keep good records you could definitely take credit for it when it comes to tax time whenyou sell your townhouse. So all in all i think it works out better for us homeowners, though the liabilities are also higher accordingly...

are you still unhappy with the purchase of your house? We just signed to buy our first one, but seeing stories like yours make me a bit nervous. Did you ever get that resolved?

I am not unhappy with the purchase of my house as it has more benefits than downfalls. Just be prepared to expect problems at some point as repairs are to be expected. I have not had the piping resolved as I had some other things needing immediate attention. That is something that I will have to think of at some point. Congratulations on the purchase of your first home and hope you love it and enjoy living in your new home. Make sure you have someone inspect the home before buying it.

I agree it is really nice to not have to answer to anyone else, but the city, of course. That is until something needs done. Nothing is ever a little bit of money, it is always a real big amount.

Yeah, really!! Thankfully, we are not planning on getting a house anytime soon. We like apartments for now and we like how it is easier to move out of any apartment every year than in a house because that way you can't accumulate a lot of junks on the way. If you have a house, you intend to find a lot of stuff for your place but with an apartment, it isn't that bad that all.

Being a homeowner in my opinion is the best thing a person can do. When I was young I first rented a house at 50.00 a month and got my start from there. Nowadays rent here where I live in Canada can cost up to 1,200.00 a month. I know what you mean when you say it hurts when repairs hit but at the end of the mortage you're done and it's yours. I have a georgous 4 pound Maltese dog as you know by my avatar and no matter how large or small most places won't allow pets. The biggest problem in renting right now is there's always a chance your landlord will sell the house and you may only have three months or less to get out, owning your own place you don't have that worry. You can paint the house the way you want and do what you please. After making house payments I could never go back to paying rent so someone else gets his/her mortage payed off. Just my opinion. Good luck with the pipes my friend. Take Care

One of the best decisions I have made in my life is to buy my own home. I worked hard over the years, and have paid up fully for the apartment I bought. It's value has now risen at least 6 times the price I paid, because when I bought it, it was during a recession so the price was relatively cheap. It's a great feeling to own your own home, rather than rent one or live within someone else's home. You can do what you want with it, since you are the owner. But the downside of it is that since it is yours and yours only, you will have to maintain it, pay tax on it and fix anything that is damaged, broken or destroyed - all on your own account. It can be painful at times, but isn't the same with everything else you own?

I never regret having my own house. It's not yet fully renovated but I'm glad I have one. I been renting for about 5 years before I decided to get a house and Im glad I did it. I been with my house for about 5 years now and if you compare the price when the time I get it, gosh it almost doubled. So I'm happy I did.
Aside from that, I have a great neighbors and I enjoy living in their. And I can change/enhance the way my house look everytime I want to.

I LOOOOVE home ownership!
We lived in an apartment for a couple of years and I hated it. We heard everything our neighbours did. They would do laundry and clean house late at night, so it always woke us up when we were sleeping.
Our apartment also wasn't in that great of shape and looked really dated (think harvest gold appliances from the 70's). We couldn't paint or do anything to personalize it. Plus there wasn't that much storage space. I think homeownership is worth the unexpected costs.
With a house we can make it our own and decorate/upgrade how we choose. It finally feels like home! Plus there's the benefit of having a basement and a garage for storage space. A couple of my favorite things are having room for a deep freeze, and a garage for the cars in the winter.

Well, we live in a Condo we are buying. There are some Good and Bad that come along with owning one, but I for one can say it has been interesting, and we would really Love to own a home someday, or rent if we had too, to get away from all of these extra Fees. They can be crazy for sure. They have been talking about doing some Repairs that may cost us some extra money or an Assesment, and as the Economy is so Bad right now, I wonder how they can even get a Loan to even consider something like this. So it can definately be Stressful for us at times, so we Pray and ask God to be in control and just hope things will work out for the best.
Hope you can get your problem worked out as well, and Good to see you back in myLot. You were truly missed.

Actually the taxes, repairs and other such things is what kept me from trying to buy a home.. I am so glad I rent and I never plan to buy a home.
Unless, I win the lottery ..

Maximum mental maturity requires for owning a home because after purchase we have to coordinate with neighbour in all the ways not as yours choice in all your behaviours. For all hardships in your street you have to coordinate and tp act alike as an bafoon of circus. Rented house you can be obliged to your house owner and sleep away or goaway to your work so no mental tortures no coordinations required for rented house it is the best.

I think its a two way street with me, I love being a homeowner but I also dont like the reapirs, The things I do love tho outweigh the bad.we enjoy the privacy and no one telling us what colors we can paint and what we cant,we live in the country so the neighbors are not so close and you cant get that in an apartment.

I love having my own home and I love the fact that I can do what I want with it. Yes...there are drawbacks as there is with any kind of investment. But that is what it is...and investment. So when all is said and done you will reap a harvest in the end in the form of having an added investment!

My husband and I are building a house right now, but I'm starting to feel nervous financially since it's getting so close to miving in. I'm excited about having my own home, but all the bills and extra living expenses make me nervous. We live in a townhouse right now, but our house is pretty large and the upkeep is another thing I'm dreading.
