I found an unexpected guest when I came home from work today

I used the remote to open the garage door, and saw a tarantula strolling behind my husband's car. It must have been in the garage already. I couldn't believe it! I don't remember seeing a tarantula inside the city in many years, only on highways during travels. I honked for hubby to come out, and he scooped it into a box using a spatula. I'd hate to find one of those walking around my house during the night when I have to make a potty break!

Wasn't he cool? What did Dad do with him?? You should have picked him up and let him him crawl around on the counter or something.

I sure hope he killed that nasty thing! Ugh! What a way to come home! lol I have the same fear about going to the bathroom in the dark but mine is a vision of snakes like one coming up out of the toilet and bites me. CREEPY!! But it is what goes through my mind so I turn on the light only to blind myself.... can't win!

Oh my god, I would have been freaked out. I hate those things. Well, actually I hate any kind of spider. What did he do with it after he scooped it into the box?

He wasn't sure what to do with it, so it went into the trash for pick up.

WOW, way beyond cool. I have never seen one live I don't think. I guess having them in the house at night might be a bit unnerving. But hey, adventure and excitement is where you find it.

He only wanted to be your friend...:) I had forgotten that those were common in your area. I was at Ft.Hood for a couple of years in the '70's, and saw several of them during my stay, along with the scorpions and of course the armadillos. Yes, that would be a nasty surprise in the middle of the night...here we have a lot of wolf spiders, and while they can get pretty nice sized, they are nothing compared to those tarantulas of yours...though they can really move when they want to, and they like to surprise a person at night too.

In talking about it later, it reminded us of an email picture we got awhile back showing the camel spiders some of our military men were finding. I can't remember where...maybe Afghanistan. Those things were HUGE! Some of the pictures looked like they were almost 12" across! Now that is a spider! UGH!

My brother used to have a pet tarantula. He kept it in a terrarium and fed it mealworms. He used to take it out and play with it. Sometimes it used to get out by itself, and it would wander around the house. My mom was afraid of it, and she would scream and run away from it if she found it walking around loose. It used to like to crawl up on the drapes. I wouldn't touch that spider, though my brother loved it.

Early in our marriage, hubby had a pet tarantula for awhile also. I'm older now, and for some reason have no desire to play with insects. LOL

Oh man, I would hate that as well. It is interesting to hear that you scooped it and did not squish it. That is the kind of thing I would do. Just tell it to go outside and stay outside. Leave me alone, go eat some other bug, and I will gladly leave you alone as well. Back off spider buddy, the house is mine. I am glad you saw it, that is for sure.

Tarantulas are not harmful to humans. Here's a link about them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarantula I don't have a problem with spiders except for the mess they make with their webs. Most clean up insects.

Thanks for the great information. It made me relax a bit. If it would hang around and eat all of the other pests, than I wouldn't mind. Just don't be crawling around my house when I have to get up during the night!

Yuck! Harmless I'm sure, but it reminds me of the Brady Bunch episode where the Brady's are in Hawaii and a tarantula is crawling across Peter's chest while he is asleep. Where this memory comes from, I don't know. : )

Yikes!! I hate spiders!! Good thing your hubby was home to capture it. What did he do with it, let it go somewhere else out in the woods? I hope he didn't bring it in the house! Good luck and hopefully there won't be any relatives of this spider anywhere nearby.

Oh My! I agree with you! Scary. Seems like more and more creatures and animals are moving into the city. We are destroying their natural habitat at an alarming rate. So they have to go somewhere.

EEEEEKK! That must be quite scary! Very scary in fact! We get a lot of spiders in our house at the moment but we are very lucky in that we don't really have any dangerous spiders here in Scotland! xxx

I have never like taranturlas. I do not mind spiders, but when they are as big as your house I do not like them. LOL I know they are peaceful and good for the enviroment because they eat bugs, but they are just creepy to me. When I get up at night to take a potty break I do not turn the lights on since I have two night lights. I sure would not like to squish one. I do not think my cats would let a tarantula live in the house they would have it in a minute.

Ewwwwwwwwww! I would of been freaking out and yelling! I'm not afraid of anything until I see a spider near by. LOL It's a good thing your hubby was there.

The biggest tarantula I ever saw was in my front yard in 1981 right after we moved into this house. As my wife hates spiders, we almost moved back out! Fortunately, we don't see them very often and I've never seen one that big since.

I hate spiders and don't think I could live where I know tarantulas could live as well.

I'm glad it was you and not me! We don't have tarantula's here, but we do have those big hairy wolf spiders, which are quite bad enough. Especially when you find them in the house!

How scary! I saw on television how these slow creeping creatures could kill a person. I hate even just a sight of it. Thanks God no one in your family gets hurt. Well, no one knows what kind of visitors will drop by in our house once in awhile. lol
