People from Terrorist nations applying and receiving legal status

It seems the US implemented a Diversity Visa Program in 2003 to encourage people from countries with relatively low rates of immigration to the United States to participate. The Diversity Visa Program was created by the Immigration Act of 1990 and provides up to 55,000 immigrant visas each year to those countries. "Nearly 10,000 people from countries designated as sponsors of terrorism have entered the United States under an immigration diversity program with relatively few restrictions...From 2000 to 2006, the program allowed 3,703 people from Sudan, 3,164 from Iran, 2,763 from Cuba and 162 from Syria to enter the United States and apply for permanent legal resident status, the report said. That totals 9,792 new immigrants." Are we not paying attention to who we let into our country? Are we nuts? http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070921/ts_nm/security_usa_visas_dc_1;_ylt=AgYBCeoV8xbTjaD8Wng5rw2WwvIE

Well I agree with ItTakesAllSorts on this one. Do you really think that everyone from these countries is a terrorist? If you do then that's very sad because it means that you've played right into the hands of the people who want you to think that way. Just because a country is designated as a "sponsor of terrorism" doesn't mean the population of that country has signed up to it! Terrorists can come from anywhere - they could be born and bred within your own country. A terrorist doesn't have to be an immigrant. As ItTakesAllSorts says, in the 1970's and 1980's mainland Britain lived with the daily threat of Irish terrorism (largely funded I have to say from the US!) but we didn't close our borders to the Irish or restrict their movements in any way. The vast majority of Irish people despised the terrorists as much as the rest of us did. You can't condemn a whole nation because of the actions of a few fanatics and lunatics.

Well said Stiletto, but reading most of the comments here we are in the minority on this way of thinking. Scary!!!

It's VERY scary. I know the British press have done a pretty good job in some quarters of whipping up anti-immigration sentiments but generally I think most people have the sense to see that for what it is.

Too right Stiletto. I moan about this country but I am glad I live here. We are one of the most tolerant country's and this is something to be proud of.

That's how it is with the government, the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing. How can we have a war on terror with all of the wire taps, eaves dropping and all of the other security in place and then allow such a breach as this? Not only are they nuts, but they are also pretty stupid.

And then the government wonders how so many people here are able to get so much information back to their home countries for the sole reason of terrorism. It's so sad, and angering to know that these people are not only being allowed to freely enter our country, but also to stay and potentially cause problems. Somebody has got to be nuts if they don't put a stop to this nonsense very very soon.

9/11 - hijacked planes hit the world trade center
This is one of the reasons why 9/11 happened. The terrorists simply used their money to obtain student visas. So they were able to enter the United States, enroll in flying schools, then committed their mass murder. And those were just the hijackers. They must have had countless other supporters still roaming around the country, plotting their next move.

Not everyone from those nations are terrorists. In fact I know or knew people from some of those nations and they weren't terrorist or evil at all. I do agree though, there should be some definite background research and checks on legal immigrants. The worse part is, government and some people still don't want to do anything about border crossings. I'm very aware that terrorists and destructive elements are infiltrating the country that way. I also agree with what Rogue said. The country will implode for multiple reasons.

Yep. Canada's pretty dumb too. We've already spent like $200,000+ on some 200 illegal Mexican immigrants who showed up at our door and are projected to spend millions more. I mean, what the heck? That money could be used to help senior citizens get the surgery they need, help students pay for university, revamp transit systems... And instead it's being wasted on keeping these jerks alive. Apparently it could take 13 months for them to be processed, in which time they will undoubtedly start having kids just to have kids with Canadian citizenship and complicate matters further and live off Canadian stupidity :(

Are you really believing that everyone who happens to come from these countries is a terrorist. The government has done a good job on brainwashing people if they think this. I could say that the US government are the biggest terrorists going and any American entering my country could be a potential terrorist. When we went through the fear of the IRA for years, many Irish people lived and immigrated into the UK. Did they all go on to bomb us, no they never. Oh yes USA-IRA..so no more. Please don't get caught up in this way of thinking as this is what adds to racism and fear.

I really do not understand the United States...It seems to me that we just let anyone come over here from other countries like it is no Big thing...This has been happening for quite a long time...I do not think that most of the people who make up the United States agree with this system, but i do not know what to do about it....It seems the United States is weak in this area, and we are much to gullable...
