I Fell Down Flat On My Buttocks Today In the Giant Foods Grocery Store

Unhappy - Ouch is all I can say!

I did not even see the "one" sign while shopping for groceries today. Besides, the small wet spot was not even small, it was like a big puddle in the middle of the aisle - why would someone put a wet sign up and not even attempt to mop it up?!? GRRRR My husband was complaining left right and center and demanded to see the Store Manager. This is how it happened - I went ahead of my husband and son and was checking off my list when suddenly I found myself slipping and falling back on my bottom. Luckily I didn't fall and hit my head as well. I was angry and embarrassed that it happened, but was also taken back and surprised of how many people came to my aid besides my husband and son. Four other couples came over to see if I was ok, and they said to make a complaint with the Manager on duty, which I did and he took my details. One of them even said to hire a lawyer and sue them... he saw the whole thing and said it was a nasty fall. If felt like it too. I just hope tommorrow that I don't bruise or even start to feel any kind of back ache either. The last thing I want is to hurt my lower back again - that is something I don't want to ever go through again. I was shaken up by it though and couldn't wait to get out of there. That was the fastest shopping I had ever done.:(

I just read what happened to you, and I think it is too bad... sounds bad, and I guess feel bad to... I believe you should sue them, first because you do not know wath are going to be the consecuences of your fall, and also because could be a lot worse, if you were carring a baby or with your kid in your arms... Think about it!

I'm not sure if I would go that far. I did report it with the Store Manager and they were going to file a claim and get back to me about it. He apologised over and over again and they got someone mopping up the spill immediately. But your right thought, what if I was carrying a child in my arms? hmm something to think about. Thanks for repsonding terrych.

Maybe not to sue them, at least make sure that do not happen again... maybe next tiem you are not that like at this time! So it is better if there is not a next time... your accident could be prevent from hapening...

I'm sorry you got hurt, but...did you at least file an accident report with the store? It is very important that you do that. The very least they should do is pay for your medical bills. You may have injured your back and not realize it until later when the pain settles in. My son hurt his head once in a kmart store I believe, he was playing and one of the racks fell on his head, and my mother insisted I file an accident report, she used to work for sears and said everyone should do that when injured. But anyway, I rec'd a phone call in a day or so from kmart's headquarters and they wanted to make sure I took him to a dr. and had him examined and they would pay for it. So I did. I mean I didn't sue or anything. But a puddle of water in a grocery store is a SERIOUS hazard. My son used to work for Winn Dixie and he said they had to make sure to mop up spills, it was a big no no to let one stay and have someone fall. Good thing you had wittnesses too. Hope you are ok and nothing happened to injure your back.

Thank you applsofgold and toni for your responses which make a lot of sense. I did not file a accident report but they did take my details and said they were going to file a claim, is that the same thing as an accident report? This is the first time this has ever happened to me and all i really wanted to do was get the hell out of there because i was wet down the back of my pants and embarrassed at the same time. I will see what comes of it as I don't know if I really want to sue even though it was stupid of them to not mop up the big spillage in the first place. I mean if I spilled something at home it's wiped or mopped up immediately. I think I will write a letter as Toni suggested. Thanks again.

I'm really sorry on what happened to you maddysmom, hearing your story makes me feel furious also. As a former crew of fastfood chains here, we are also one of those responsible in mopping up wet floors in our store. This is strictly implemented by our store, to avoid such accidents that happened to you. After all, it is the costumer that we are serving and it is part of our job. You should take a stand on this, let them get what they deserve and teach them a lesson they'll surely never forget.

That's nice to hear my friend, I hope that they perform their duties and responsiblities for their costumers well. Though you filed a complaint not because of being humiliated, it is also for their ignorance and incompetence in keeping their stores hazard-free and safe for consumer's convinience.

I am glad that I did file a complaint with the store manager and he took my details. I had not realised that I should of filed an accident report so he said that they were going to put a claim in, but not sure if that is an accident report. It has never happened to me before and I hope it doesn't again. One of the other posters suggested I write a letter of complaint so I think i will do that and see how it goes. I do feel fine today and fingers crossed nothing else comes of it. Thanks for your response raijin.

Hi maddysmommy. I am so sorry to hear about you falling at the grocery store. I am however quite surprised as well that so many people came to see if you were okay. Doesn't seem to happen quite as much as it used to sadly. Hopefully you are okay tomorrow with no pain or bruises. If by chance you do though, I would recomend suing like one of the people suggested. Their has to start being better safety precautions/standards in the work place. Not only for the employers and employees, but the customers too!

I was surprised how many people came to my aid too. I know I would of done the same as well if it happened to someone else. I need to pay more attention to my surroundings next time too. I am glad that I did make a complaint with the store manager and he is going to file a claim, so I'm hoping its an accident report of some sorts. I am also going to write a letter and send it in and see what comes of it. Thanks for responding purpleteddybear :) I do feel better today.

I think that things like that happen to everyone from time to time. It will take awhile but you'll forget about it. when someone brings it up again in the future you'll all have a big laugh. I hope your back is fine. back problems are no fun at all.

Back problems are no fun alright. I had a herniated disc late last year and it took months for me to recover from it. Triggering it again or something with my lower back is the last thing I want to happen. I do feel better today thanks pisasabird and feel the soreness around where I landed. Let's hope it goes away quickly.

Aww bless ya hunni, hope you are well and ok. Sometimes it is better to fall all way on your neck so the spine do not have to take the full force of the fall. I think you should sue them too especially if you have the slightest discomfort. Greetings from your Danish friend :)

I'm sorry you had a fall, it can be very painful. I'm glad to hear that people came over to help you. That says some good things about our society that there are still some nice people out there willing to help. I'm not surprised though that someone's immediate reaction was to call a lawyer. Funny how the first thing that comes to mind about an accident is how to benefit from it. I hope you're ok, and didn't get hurt too badly.

ouch! that hurts! if that happened to me i'd probably super embarrassed too and angry and complain to the grocery attendants. if it doesnt hurt so much, i'd probably laugh it off after complaining a little. ^__^;; if it hurts so much, i'd blame all the attendants. LOL and might even go with my husband to complain to the manager and demand them to take me to a clinic. ^__^;; one thing for sure, the janitor would be in deep trouble. he'd definitely get a word from their manager. they'll be worried of the grocery's image. take a rest mommy. ^__^ i hope that wont develop into something bad. it would probably be just a sore butt. ^__^

I am so, so sorry to hear that this has happened to you my friend. You do need to sue. This was definite negligence on their part and you need to make sure that this never happens to you or anyone else again. If there is a spill, it needs to be cleaned up immediately. Putting a sign down is like putting a Band-aid on it. Being accident prone, I have had many nasty falls and I know for sure that these things can catch up with you later on. It is like my doctor told me, you only have one body and you are going to have to use that same one for the rest of your life, so take good care of it. I hope that you feel better soon. I just said a prayer for you and I know now that everything will be alright. With a husband and small child, I know that it is difficult to really rest the way you need to now, but try to as much as possible. HUUUGGGGSSSS, I love you, Take care.

I do feel better today Rozie THANKS for the hugs and love. I did give them my details and he said that they were going to file a claim so hopefully that is some type of accident report. I wasn't sure what to do as all i wanted to do is get the hell out of there as the back of my pants was wet and i was still embarrassed. It was nice to be comforted by others though, I was really surprised how many people came to see if I was ok and offer advice. I am not sure if I will go far as sueing them but I will write a letter about what happened and see how it goes from there. Thanks again my friend and I feel fine today.

God in heaven Im glad I dont live in the US. Sueing over falling over... It really irks me that ppl will sue over nothing like that. Its part of life, and if ppl were attentive less of it would happen. True someone didnt mop it up instantly, but how do u know the person wasnt on his way to do it. If someone tried to sue because of that here where I live, they would be the laughing stock of the neighborhood and very fast of the country as it hit the news. Im sad for you fall and any pain you might had with it. But dont you think it was overworked fast, by calling the manager and then having someone tell you to sue? I see kids fall everyday, I see grownups fall everyso often as well, for what ever the reason. Most just get up and laugh it off as they themselves see the fun in it. I honestly dont see the error in it all. Yes its embarrasing, so is having your dress fly up by a sudden breeze, so is hitting someones car when you miss the signs, so is suddenly spewing milk out your nose because someone made you laugh as you drank.... but again thats a bit part of life, embarrasing and painfull things happen from time to time. Noone pushed you and there was even a sign to tell it was wet, I dont see why there is room for complaining or contemplating sueing. It was a mishap at most, or inattentiveness even maybe. Best wishes to you maddysmommy, and I hope theres no bruisings or worse effects.

Thanks bunsdk. I do feel fine today and feel sore around the area where I fell. I did file a complaint and they took my details and I think that is enough. I don't want to sue, its really just not me to do that. I should of been paying more attention to my surroundings as well. I just hope that next time they spill water or there is a leakage, to have it attended to immediately. I am glad my son was no where near it as it could of been worse. If this happened while I was living in Samoa, everyone would of laughed for sure LOL I was glad that I did get some support from others too. I am over it and hope that its just nothing more than a bruise. Have a nice day!

Awww you poor soul how awful! That was very negligent of the store and I would at least write an official letter of complaint and ask for a response, it is really lucky that you were not seriously injured! I know why you are worried about the risk of injuring your back - you know I understand how you feel as I am still suffering very badly and hardly get out of the house - the supermarket is one of the few places I go and If that had happened to me I would be very upset indeed! I do hope that you are ok now sweety and haven't developed any problems! Hugs and sympathy! xxxx

Hello! Ohh...that must have hurt a lot! as in OUCH! big time..if it was me I would be embarrassed and would be crying not because of the pain but because of embarrassment..*hehe* It happened to one of my mother's friend when we went shopping, she fell on the wet floor and my mother 'the big mouth' LOL!! really called the manager and shouted at her..telling them she will send them the hospital bill...*hehe* they were so scared and so all 'i'm sorry maam' to my mother and her friend..My mother didn't really send them the hospital bill because her friend was alright. Moral of the story..read the signs..*hehe* and avoid wet floors..Ohh..I hope you're feeling better now. Just have a rest and if feeling some pain do take some anti-inflammatory medicines or pain reliever. Take care. *smile* ciao! c",)

I'm glad you weren't seriously hurt Maddy. I'm also very proud others came to help you out. Believe me, around my parts only a couple of people out of a thousand would even bother. Some would just laugh too, its a sad sight. Make sure to be careful when treading in supermarkets. I almost had an incident with an overwaxed floor. Thankfully I was able to pick up on the odd scent of wax in the cereal section, and sure enough I tested my foot and found a slick. It might be difficult when going through day to day things (I'm not always 100% detail oriented myself) but from time to time be sure to watch your surroundings. Happy shopping and living Maddy.

i feel sorry for you... i hope you are fine and do not hurt your back... well, they do the right thing by putting the wet sign there... may be the cleaner is just not fast enough to mop the spill up before any accident happen... anyway, i think you should file an accident report to the manager and ask for some kind of compensation... i hope you will get well soon... take care...

I genuinely feel sorry for you. This has happened to me many times so I know the exact feeling. The physical pain and the mental embarrassment. And then there’s the lower back too, the most sensitive part of the female anatomy. You can of course sue them, it was definitely negligence on their part. Hope you are recovering and watch out next time. with all the alertness and care that people take, mistakes do happen and accidents such as these take place.

I will make sure that I pay more attention to my surroundings. I shop at Giant all the time so I was shocked at how much of a BIG puddle it was and they had no one cleaning it up at the time (or maybe there was someone who knows!) I do feel fine today and hopefully its just a bruise and nothing more, thanks sudip for your response.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that! I would have been mad too. Those people can be so careles sometimes and leave huge puddles of water. That actually happened to my friends little girl. She was 4 at the time and was walking down the aisle and slipped in a puddle and hit her head. There wasn't even a sign though! Little kids don't know to look for puddles of water in the grocery store. My friend and her hubby were fit to be tied too. I don't think they ever even got to see a manager. I know they left plenty of complaints before they left. At least some other people came over to check on you. It's always kinda surprising when people reach out a hand to help because that doesn't happen often anymore. Anyway...I'm glad you're mostly okay. I hope you're not bruised. :)
