Should old people be able to drive?

So we have so many driving laws, but what about the old people. I remember when I was young my Gramie driving me to school, she went down a one way road the wrong way. I was like 10 and even saw the sign. Luckily a cop saw her, and pulled her over, he did nothing but help her get turned around. While I love my Grandparents there came a point where the man should have taken away that licence, and never given it back.
I think there should be a test at a certain age, not just the eye test, the HOLE test. The same way they give it go a kid just starting out.
What do you think?

You I have had this discussion with my friends I don't think it is a thing where you just put an age on it because I say to my friends it is the young ones that seem to be in all the accidents and are being killed then one old person will have an accident then the subject comes up should they be allowed to drive...I say with the statistics they should be making it later for the young to get a licence. :)

A little backwards but fine Lila. With my experience, a lot of people in many age brackets especially ages 30-50 should have their licenses revoked and be forced to walk as a pedestrian for an entire year! Many of these fools couldn't drive right and all they do is just focus on themselves and not the laws and safety of the road! You see it bright as day in their driving, their risks, their being on the cellphone everytime they drive, their crashes on the freeway, their rubbernecking and continued crashing in the area of an accident, and I can go on! In fact a lot of these bozos don't see driving as an earned privilege anymore! Oh, no no no! Its a right despite how poor or careless one drives! GRRRR!! And some are so deluded I wouldn't doubt they see it as the 11th commandment.
I hate when everyone says "the statistics say, the statistics say" $&%&! statistics! I am virtually a flawless driver. No fault accidents, no speeding, no careless action, observant at all times. People I mentioned in the first part of my rant can't even do ONE of those in my list. So if the states are gonna start pulling licenses, start with the cellphone yakking, not looking when changing lanes, self important, rule breaking, rubbernecking soccer mommy drivers and their I own the road and no one else matters backwards husband drivers.

I totally agree, the young kids are just as bad. I called the cops on my cell phone the other day cause two guys were racing each other down the street, cutting people off, and running lights. I reported there licence plate number, and the dispatcher said they already had somebody on the way out. Racing is a big problem here because I'm like five minutes from the college, and the highschool.

I think that everyone should be tested every now and then to see if they have the ability to drive safely.
Age should not be as much of a factor as ability.
I took myself off of the road in July of 2002 and haven't driven but one time since then and that was only because it was necessary.
This was due to a disability that made it painful for me to drive and because of that I wasn't able to concentrate on what I was dong. I had become a danger to myself and everyone else, and I realized that fact... so now I no longer drive.
If a person can pass the test then they can continue to drive. If they cannot pass then they have no business driving.

ok you tell me how old is Old? Old used to be 45. then it was 50. I think you know what I'm saying. There is no way to say who is able or unable to drive safely. Some over 80 seniors don't see that well so they never drive on the thruways. All kids want to get on the truway as soon as they get behind the wheel. I saw a thing on TV about a guy, 102 and still driving, He's been driving since he was 15 and has never had an accident. Can you beat that? How many fender-benders have you had?

i think you should ask this question when you are old and there is no one to drive you around...and you ran our of potato chips to watch football and its snowing outside, too cold to walk.

I understand what your saying but I don't think that potato chips should be enough to let someone that can't see anymore drive. I do realize that they need to get places still so maybe we could start some kind of senior citizen bus thing. And I'm not a little girl just a few years from thirty..

They should be able to drive as long as they can do so safely. More states need to implement some kind of law that requires those over 65 years old to take a driving refresher course and driving test every few years after that age in order to make sure they can still drive safely.
To quote Jerry Seinfeld: "The senior citizen motto is drive slow, sit low. The official flag for Florida should be a steering wheel with a hat and knuckles. I see a car passing me by and I say 'Theres no one driving that car'. There is actually a signal in florida known as the eventual left because so many people leave their blinkers on. And at what age do old people get in their cars in their driveways one day and decide their not going to look anymore: "I'm old and I'm backing up!".

Oh geez! When I see old people driving on the road I stay really far away from them.LOL I think at a certain age they should be made to take the test again. Written and driving part. Yes its a good idea.

I was recently at a driver license office and they refused to give an elderly woman her licence because she couldn't pass the eye test, but she did pass the other test. Don't ask me how that happened, but she did. They did deny her license. So, I know in some instances they do deny them license to drive. I don't know, but it is hard to let your independence go as an elderly person, but the safety of others is very important. I really don't know what else to say other than that. I sometimes get irritated with the "blue hair brigade" driving at a snail's pace, but at least they are not wizzing by at break neck speed lol.

Thats true, I know that the accident level is much higher among younger kids than it is older people. But I think they need figure something out, shut I don't want an old person cutting me off cause they can't bend their neck far enough to see me, nor do I want some kid cutting me off cause he's racing the car next to him! Cars, and insurance costs way to much!! LOL..

Hi,
I hope more aged people are very careful and they might be more matured it might be their sensitivity power that is down. May be the energy level. Age is not a matter for driving it is how one drives carefully and handles it very well. Hence I feel age should not be given a barrier. Moreover the capability and the health aspect is to be checked. Even the teens are committing more accidents may be compared to the aged.

I say once you cause a major or fatal accident you don't drive again. I can see some elderly people not having the reflexes for driving anymore, but it should be proven in an eye test and a general reflex test, those should be easy and moderate to administer. That makes me think. Maybe I should just pack a webcam/camcorder and just record morons on the road.

i think they should be able to drive to a certain extent because there have been times that they are going too slow on the highway, but i think they should still be given their freedom because they have provided so much for the country in their youth, and also i would like to drive when im an old person lol

I believe that everyone has the right to drive at any age and that right should never be taken away, unless of course you have a record of wreckless driving or DUI's! However, I do believe that after a certain age or if you have certain conditions, you should have a yearly physical to make sure you are capable of handling a vehicle or any kind of heavy machinery!
