xray question

My hubby had his back surgery yesterday and thank God it went well and he is home now to begin his recouperation. But...just before his surgery, the anesthesist (sp) came to talk with us and informed my husband that his chest xray showed a mass in his right lung. The guy was adamant that he get a CT asap. His father died of lung cancer so he is definitely concerned about this. I asked the doctor about this and he said yes, he needed a CT asap and that it could possibly be scar tissue, fungus or whatever. My husband has had many chest xrays over the years and nothing like this has happened before. I would like to know if anyone here has dealt with this issue, and what the possibilities might be. He is having the CT and the dr. wanted it done tomorrow, but he was too sore from the surgery and wanted to put it off, but I talked him into doing it next week. I would just like to know some options and hear some of your stories if you have had something like this in your life or a family or friends lives.

My brother had to have a CT scan done on his lungs. They had found a dark mass on his x-ray and wanted further investigation. Unfortunately they can't identify it and my brother wouldn't go into surgery if they couldn't confirm what it was. So, he is walking around with a dark spot on his lung and no one knows what it is. It is better to know what you are dealing with, than live with the worry, so I agree with you to get that done asap! I hope for the best on that. It is very scary especially after going through a back surgery! But thank goodness you found it and hopefully it turns out to be nothing.

Oh my, I wish your brother would let them check it out. I agree that IF it is something, better to find out and do something, ANYTHING to prevent it from spreading or becoming inoperable. Thank you so much for sharing with me. I'm worried about him too as I also have liver cancer, but I am living with mine, just fighting aggressively. It has always been my fear that he would face a health crisis too. But whatever the outcome, we will fight it together. Have a great week my friend.

that is wonderful that you have a positive outlook on the whole situation concerning yours and his health. It is very important to stick together in times like these. I too wish my brother would let him check his lungs out. He has asthma as it is and I just don't want to see him get worse! Thanks for your thoughts.

Okay don't let this alarm you yet, just remember to keep cool until you at least know what it is or could be, because it's better to be there with your whole head for your hubby than it is to be freaking with him, i can just imagine how he's feeling... I have a friend that had tumors in one lung, which turned out to be cancerous, and it was okay, they just removed the whole lung and he's living the way he always has, just can't be AS active because he runs low on air a little faster than the rest of us do. Now when i was in school another friend had had his lungs collaps, and it turned out that he had some kind of severe infection that ended up causing him to have to have a chunk of his lung removed, besides changes in his diet and the way he lived his life (he was drastically overweight) once it healed he was good to go, though he did need to have inhalers and such on him just in case, because of the less air thing. which i'm sure my other friend is on now, i'm not sure, he just told me everything was going great for him just couldn't go as much as he used to. Now keep in mind, the one with the whole lung removed was a very healthy man to begin with and the one who had part of his lung removed wasn't so healthy, and never took care of himself. Whatever the result is, keep cool, and just know that everything happens how it should in the end, take care of your hubby and yourself and i know it'll all work out for the 2 of you :)

Thank you so much and I appreciate the good thoughts and well wishes. I will keep everyone updated when I find something out. It is really comforting to me to know I have others I can share this with. I don't like to let my husband know how concerned I am. I am also a cancer patient, so he doesn't like to talk about it with me I guess he thinks it will upset me, but life is what it is, and you have to take what you get and make the best out of it. Mine is wonderful even though I am a cancer patient, I couldn't be any happier or blessed than I am right now. Thanks again, you really brightened my day :)

I had a friend who thought she was having allergy symptoms, was treated with antibiotics, and it turned out what was actually going on was a fungus in her sinuses and lungs, after being in a car wreck and having an air bag deploy. So I guess it could be a fungus. I think it is wise to get it checked as soon as possible if this is a new condition, not noted in the xrays before. I am glad that your husband's back surgery went well.

Thanks Terry for sharing with me. He is glad the back surgery is done and he can just heal now. He is not a happy camper though, he is bored and wants to work on his car he is restoring. But the doc said do NOTHING for 2 weeks until he sees him again. So my daughter likes to call him and pick at him, I said he only likes to watch car shows and engine stuff, she said to get him the Disney Cars coloring book, he got a kick out of that. Thanks again for sharing with me and have a great day :)

Hi applsofgld, last year they found such a spot on my lung and after exams I was told it is water. It was due to a pneumonia and I had many antibiotics but it somehow is still there, even though smaller. I have to be very careful not to get ill of pneumonia again however. Also wanted to extend my get well wishes towards your husband. I'll pray for him and you that all of it is nothing to worry and that he'll be better before you both know ;) TheFortunes

Thank you for sharing with me. I understand about the fluid in the lung. After one of my surgeries I developed a pnumonia and the last bit of fluid just refused to leave and I even had my lung drained, NOT FUN at all. But it took months and months before it quit showing on scans. I am hoping it is just nothing, as it has never shown up before on xrays. I'll keep you posted as to what we find out.

Any time a doctor tells you it would be a good idea to get a test done...it is better to do it than worry about it forever. It could be nothing or it could be something. The only way to find out is to do the test. Better to know one way or the other than stew about possibilities.

I'm so glad that your husband's back surgery went well. So good that he has you to care for him while he heals. I am having a hard time understanding why the anesthesiologist is the one that told you of the mass, and not the doctor in charge, which would probably be the surgeon. I think he/she is not following protocol, and may be creating panic. On the other hand, a mass (from what I know) COULD be from scar tissue or fungus. It could also be cancer. But, try to think positively, and concentrate on the lesser afflictions. The doctor will be "ruling out" different diagnoses and it could take some time. Please know that I, and other myLotters, too, will surely be thinking of you and feeling for you, during your husband's waiting period. My mom is famous for saying "Chinny Up". Hugs...

The anesthesist viewed the xray films before the dr. did. It was taken at the hospital and the only time this doctor is at the hospital is to do surgery or visit an inpatient. They do most of their own imaging at their own office. So I'm sure the xray was part of protocol for the hospital, and the anesthesist made sure to show the dr. the films as he said he would. The dr. didn't make light of it or try to shrug it off, he was direct and also stated scar tissue or fungus as being the cause. So I will be breathing a sigh of relief and Praising God big time if it is nothing to worry about. Thanks for sharing with me :)

I don't have any experience in that myself, but I wanted to extend my prayers and good wishes towards your husband. I'm going to pray that when they do that X-ray, whatever they saw will be completely gone. I've heard cases of that before, and I will pray that it happens again.

Oh AmbiePam your words make me want to cry, I feel so blessed to have such caring friends. Prayer is powerful and I believe in the power of prayer so I appreciate that you will be praying for him. I will keep you updated on what ever the scans show.
