Ever read a book and think that the topic was oddly relevant to your life now?

It's happened to me several times.
Sometimes I thought it was an amazing coincindence.
At times I've thought it was god showing me things that I needed to see and being open to his messages.
Other times, I've just thought that when we read a book, we are just more aware of certain underlying themes if they relate to something going on in our life at the time.
Has this ever happened to you? How did you perceive it?

Yes, lately in fact, I read a book called "Who Moved My Cheese" by Spencer Johnson, M. D. And the whole book pertains to change and how it is percepted by different people in different ways. I found a lot out about myself, which I already knew, but once I seen it in black and white, that confirmed. I do believe it was God showing me a sign through the book. It was an assignment, but I stayed open minded throughout. God works in mysterious ways, and for those that love him.

You know, funny you should ask this! My life and my family growing up can be almost identical to the "little house on the prairie"! Our family was very close, just like that, and even to this day! There are eight of us, brothers and sisters! And as I watch that show, it reminds me so much of our family!
But in my wife's family, it can be compared to the story of "Joan Crawford", and her daughter! My wife used to tell me stories of her mother, that put chills on my back, and they reminded me of the way that Joan Crawford was with her daughter! Only difference is my wife had eight brothers and sisters! I'm surprised my wife lived to be an adult!

Well, I did read a book once that very much mirrored how things were for me a few years before. It was pretty intriguing because the way the conflicts were handled were also similar. Mostly it made feel all the more connected with the world, and less alone, knowing that the possibility of someone else sharing my difficulties was probable.

synchronicity. I can't specifically, off of the top of my head think of a truly relevant time when a particular book has related to something happening--aside from bizarre coincidences like hearing a jingle then seeing the words to that jingle in the morning comics or something... But, I've had plenty of those experiences, something I've read, saw on tv, had a conversation about, all of the sudden finding myself in a situation that is completely remiscent of that earlier thought/experience... and vice versa... I just think these things happen for a reason... Some suggest that it is life/the universe/God/our consciousness telling us it's time to deal with something.

I agree with that. If you get the feeling that something (a book, tv show, work of art, anything)
"speaks to you", you should listen.

A few years ago, I received the book 'skipping Christmas' by John Grisham for Christmas. He is one of my favorite authors and so I immediately started reading it.
It was very different for John Grisham, and at first I could not figure out where it was going, then I realized that the underlying theme was the way I felt about Christmas. I proceeded to laugh hysterically through the rest of the book....not realizing how many people felt like me.
While I will not do a cruise for Christmas..I am hoping someday to be able to afford a WDW Christmas.

I'll have to look for that book.
I do think we spend to much of our Christmas efforts on superficial things.
There was a movie by a similar title...any relation?
I hope you get your WDW Christmas.
Is WDW Walt Disney World?

I havent' seen the movie, but it was based on the book and I hear the book was better. I think it had TIm Allen in it.
ANd yes..WDW is Walt Disney World..
I am hoping to do that in 2012....an Anniversary trip....I figure by then we can afford the more expensive hotels..but then there might be grandchildren in the picture..so that would pretty much rule it out at least for a whilen unless we could afford to bring them

Yes I have had that happen. I think if we look at what a book is about we are frequently drawn to it because of our ideas about things or what has happened in our lives or our questions about life itself.

Yes, I have many times. It has been sometimes as if a book has leapt out from me from the shelf of a bookshop or library. It was as if my subconscious mind was looking even if I wasn't conscious of it. And each time, it was just the information I needed.. :-)

"the most common theme people relate to is not being understood by their partners or friends. "
I can definitely relate to that!
But I've also read many books that describe ideal partners and relationships. Somtimes I think those descriptions are unrealistic.

It has actually happened to me a few times. Not all the time, but enough to really freak me out! I had no idea of what to do. I finally decided that this must be somewhat normal or it wouldn't be happening. i just got used to it.

Not sure this incident is what your talking about but Ill still tell ya! hehe
When me and my hubby first moved into together I was reading a book by Janet Evonovich, I just love her stories. But anyway, I cant remember exactly what book it was, I was borrowing it from a friend, so in the story the main character was taking riding classes at this ranch and was smitten with the instructor a really handsome guy. During the end of the session the woman had gotten her right foot stepped on by the horse she was riding.
My husband came home from work that day, limping and telling me he had gotten stepped on by one of the horses! lol I just started laughing, not that it was funny, but just because not a few hours before I started that book and that it happened in the book I was reading. lol
I told him what time I thought I had been reading it and it came close to the time he actually got stepped on. So I thought that was a pretty wild coincindence!
Jokingly he had sworn I had used the book as if it were a voodoo doll. I got this magnetic voodoo looking thing from some sun tan lotion I had bought and he had always hated it, saying it looked evil. I threw it away that day. lol

lol Thanks for sharing your funny story.
I'm a Janet Evanovich fan myself. I've only read her Stephanie Plum series and Metro Girl though. I'll have to branch out.

Oh cool, yes I have her whole Plum series in hard back, they are hilarious! I first heard them while I was working at this Data Entry place and we could listen to books on tape while we worked, hearing someone read these books was even funnier and I would burst out laughing in a really quiet room! lol
May I suggest her "Full" series as I call it. Im not really sure what order they are in as they all have different characters so I dont think it matters really, but they are
Full House
Full Speed
Full Bloom
Full Blast
And she has one out called Smitten and Plum Lovin that I liked. Plum Lovin is a "between the numbers" novel.
Happy Reading! :) Bay xx

Yes, post the link here!
I think I take bits out of each book I read and notice the similarities to my own life.
Sometimes, it's just an observation, other times I find something that is helpful and apply it to my own life.

Yes, I believe that we can be more aware of certain underlying themes if we happen to have something going on in our lives that relate. However, I also strongly believe that God talks to us and directs us in this way. So I also think He probably led you in the direction to pick up that particular book at that moment in time to help you with something or to learn something.

You never know what you might come across and how you might come across it. I think there are signs and messages all around us. We are often so busy and engaged in our own little worlds that we fail to see what the Heavens are trying to show us. In a way, I can find meanings and truths from just about any book that having relevance to my everyday life. That is why I like to read. It is as if I am constantly searching for something important in every book I read. Some answer to my life.

I have always lived in books. As a kid dealing with her parents divorce, as a teen dealing with helping to raise to small brothers, as a young woman trying to find her place in life and as a married woman settling down I have always found comfort in my books.
There are alot of books that touch my life...either helping me to understand the past better or learning how to face the future better.
In my books I have traveled the world a million times, I faced monsters, demons, mysteries, outer space, and the supernatural. I've read of ppl until they feel they are like old friends of the family. I always give my Mom credit for opening a new world for me when she taught me to read at age 4.

I've read books where the situation was strangely similar to mine, or the person's personality was similar to mine. Sometimes the book helps me to see other possibilites that I didn't see before. Other times, books have helped me to laugh at myself. Once in a while, a book helps me to see different ways to deal with a problem that I hadn't thought of and sometimes a book helps me to get over feeling sad or lost. Books are great! Take care
