I just heard on the news about these two dogs got loose and ran on a farm and the farmer shot them both. I can't believe they actually said he had the right to do that!! What if a person walked on his farm, could he shoot them too? UNBELIEVABLE!! What do you think? Do you think he should be charged? Do you think he should have the right to shoot their dogs? Why couldn't he just call the police or animal control? What are your thoughts?

He does have the right to shoot someone on his property. It is called trespassing and he might have felt threatened or maybe the dogs were just disrupting his animals. Doesn't make it good, but he has the right.

I'm sorry pillowpants but you've got that wrong. No body has the right to shoot someone else unless and only unless they're threatened bodily harm. No one can just shoot someone because they're on your property. However they can shoot an animal though. They should'nt be able to unless they're vicious but regardless they can do that. Just wanted to clarify that for you so that in the event someone comes on your property, don't shoot them or you can and will go to jail. Only if you're threatened or defending yourself. I'd hate to see anybody get into trouble over something they didn't know better about. Too many people have already.

Actually, it depends on the state. As far as people go... In Massachusetts, you need to fire a warning shot before you shoot someone In Florida, if you feel even remotely threatened they recently passed an oktoshoot law.

Well you didnt really give too much detail here. Do you know how many times he had called the police or animal control before the time he shot them? Maybe he has animals on this farm and hes only protecting whats his. These dogs could have been agressive. There are many factors in justifying this action. This could have been a reacurring situation. People just shouldnt let their dogs run free like that anyway. Stuff like this happens when they do. Bay Lay Gray xx

They were golden retrievers that got loose and the owners were looking for them. They were family pets. The owners said the dogs wouldnt hurt a fly. The farmer shot the two dogs THEN called animal control.

I'm a farmer and I've had to shoot dogs that were chasing my livestock, on the farm. A Farmer must have the right to protect his livlihood. His farm animals are his income, and calling the police or animal control would be too late. Dogs from urban homes can go Crazy when they taste blood! It is paramount that they are stopped Immediately. My wife once shot a neighbor's terrier that was chasing her geese. She saw the dog from the kitchen, she raised the window, aimed the rifle and shot the dog. The neighbor had been warned, but didn't listen. He learned his lesson the Hard way. Yes, in Canada a Farmer has the right to protect his property from Uncontroled Dogs.

Actually this sounds so sick but I know a family that claims they have shot over 500 dogs that wondered onto their property and don't feel the least bit guilty about it. They feel they have every right to kill them. I have dogs running around here all the time (not mine) and noone does anything to them. They aren't really hurting anyone so leave them alone. Hopefully this event will create awareness on this problem. Vicki

i remember about 2-3 yrs back, in a town here in maine they had this huge news making incident that hit the airwaves even on cnn news etc. but for me, it was the most rediculous thing i had ever heard ! people had seen this "beast" wondering around this town in peoples back yards etc. and sadly, this animal resorted to eating cats, rabbits etc that people had outside. after many calls were made, everyone was on edge because they didn't know what it was. some said coy dog, some said wild dog and sme even said it was an unknown beast of the wild ! but then, no one could find this dog anywhere once the word was out out. so they called it something like the unknown monster beast. which naturally had everyone scared and trigger happy. i believe some even shot, unknown dogs that trespassed on their land etc because they thought it was this unknown beast. well, when all was said and done...this animal eventually got hit by a car and was found at the rodaside one morning. it was insane how quickly the media etc were on this thing. taking pictures etc. but, it turned out that it wasn't some unknown beast monster but rather, a domesticated dog that was left in the wild. so because it was all nasty looking etc, it caused panic for days. this is why we need to hold every pet owner responsible for it's pets no matter what the bred. these poor dogs do not know how to survive in the wild and when they learn, then become a wild animal again. and because of this they end up paying the ultimate price, their lives !

In the united states, you are allowed to use force to protect your property. The dogs could have killed the farmer's chickens or whatever other livestock, dug up his crops, all kinds of things. To you they're cute and cuddley but to the farmer they are a threat. A farmer's only means of providing for his family is to protect his livestock and crops at all costs. That is why it is so important for people to obey leash and liscense laws. Its for the dog's own good. If I was a farmer what would I do to protect MY family? This is what the logical side of me wants to say anyways. My dog growing up was shot twice before for harrassing the farmers' chickens. Her "friend" (if dogs can have friends) was never found. The vet said that my dog would likely never walk again and most deffinately never be able to run or jump around as before. We lived in a very rural area on several acres of land, and I'm sure as most in those sittuations our pets were indoor/outdoor and came and went as they pleased. My dog made it through, she lived to be 13 years old. I was lucky. When I think about the sadness the owners of those dogs feel, It makes me sad also because I almost lost my pet. But in reality it was my parents' fault for how they kept our animals without leash, chain, or fence when outdoors.

I suppose it is true. These dogs got loose though from their backyard I believe. So there was nothing they did wrong. Its just a sad story. Its too bad there couldnt have been a better solution. Why couldn't they be allowed to use tranquilizers instead of real bullets? Something that wouldnt kill them at least!!

People have the right to use force to protect themselves.Perhaps the dogs tried to beat the farmer, and he shot them just for self-protection.Or the dogs kept disturbing his animals. In both cases,he isn't to blame for. By the way,did the dogs belong to him?

When dogs are kept in pens and then they escape and get around farm animals they think it is time to have fun and they will kill calves or sheep and can devastate a flock of chickens even if the chickens are in a pen. If the farmer had called the animal control the dogs might had killed his livestock and gone on somewhere else before the control officer could get out to the farm. Our neighbors dog had to be put down because it kept getting out and killing the farmer's chickens that lives behind us. One dog may not cause any damage but you get two and the can really do a lot of damage to farm animals.. This farmer was not taking any chances on having his livestock killed. I know another farmer who's chicken flock was devastated by a dog that dug under the fence. I lived in the country and we often had city people bring their cats and dogs out to the country and just drop them off so we often had to shoot them because they couldn't be caught.

Yes this person is obviously a danger to society. If he shoots dogs for going on his property, he will shoot people! He should be charged for sure. There is no excuse for this horrible act. This person is obviously insane and not fit to be out in the world around people.

I think that was pretty much bad. It's against ALLAH' teaching to kill animals without any valid reasons. That was very harsh of him to kill dogs unless if the dogs made some very serious jeopardy in his farm perhaps he has the right to do so.However, base on your scenario, the dogs just ran on his farm and so what he did is definitely unforgivable..
