It's been reported that at least one or two of the fires in California may have been started by an arsonist; one suspected arsonist was shot and killed by a police officer in one place. Unlikely though it may be for the culprits to be caught, if they are what do you think should be the punishment? I believe they should be charged with first degree murder because that is what it actually was in my opinion. Do you think I'm right or wrong?

This one we agree on.
It would not surprise me to find that some of these fires are deliberately set, it's bad enough when a fire is caused through carelessness, but to set one deliberately and then have someone die as a result would be murder.
Actually, the more charges that could be stacked against such a person, the better off we would all be, because they have no regard for human life, and they need to be locked up permanently.

Googling "arson murder conviction" gave over 490,000 hits, over 83,000 when changing "murder" to "first degree murder" including quotes. A quick look through them verified it is indeed considered murder though what degree is not clear.
http://www.americascriminaldefense.com/html/murder.html gives definitions of various types of murder. Capital murder does specifically mention arson, though it has to be first degree murder, meaning the prosecution has to prove that the accused intended to murder and specifically planned for it. But I think one in law enforcement would be better qualified than me to answer this adequately.

I truly don;t understand why people would want to satrt a fire. If it was an accident, like a spark from a BBQ or something like that I would not want them to be charged, as people do make mistakes, but if they intentionally started it yes they should face quite a hefty charge and sentence. Many people are heartbroken over there, and coming from Australia where fires are the norm here in Summer, I can understand how they are feeling.

I agree with you, anniepa, they should be charged with first degree murder. They should also receive the stiffest penalty the law allows. Sadly, thes fires had been predicted many months ago by a psychic on the Coast To Coast A.M. radio show. She was on again last night and predicted there are more to come over the next few weeks. I don't understand what goes on in the mind of someone that would lead them to do these horrible acts.

if you are a victim of such ungodly character, i knwow you would taught about them beig killed as capital punishment.but, my opinion is that, if it is their first time to do that act, they must be jailed as their first lesson. if they continue to do that they must be murdered because they deserved that.every people on earth created good but yet they are making themselves bad and unwanted.
