So How Long and Often..Do You Stay Up At Night

Here I am once more, with another discussion. Its not 120% so don't expect much, (plus its not that much reading). Just a simple question that occured to me. How long and often do you burn the midnight oil(stay up at night)? Its sometime past midnight where I'm at and I do find myself burning more and more midnight oil especially on weekends. Sometimes its work, other times its just different things. And for those that know a bit about me, yes I'll admit, some of it could be side effects from that savory energy drink. It was worse in college, there were plenty of times I would stay up late or just not sleep at all. Most times it was school work or studying, or the late night long term projects, those were fun... And even before this, there were a few times I'd stay up beyond midnight as a kid, either to finish that new book, watch that new movie or some anime, or get further in a game(well what did you expect? -_-). Presently, I only do the college night routine a couple or a few times. So what of you? Do you stay up past midnight or do you turn in earlier? It doesn't matter if you burn the midnight oil until 4 am, 3 am, 1 am, 12:01 am, or till 7 pm! Have a bit of fun with this discussion as well. Thanks for your time and happy posting.

Hello theprogrammer. I usually stay up till around twelve or twelve thirty before I go to bed. I cannot stay that long if I don't use the computer for the Internet. Most of the time I am at mylot for discussions till that late at night. Sometimes when it is my days off, I stay even later or longer till two o'clock in the morning. I know that it is a bad habit and does no good to my health, but I just want to. I think that it is better not to stay up till after eleven thirty or before eleven so that I can sleep more every day for a good health.

You and me both William. I know this isn't the best for health, but one way or another I'm compelled to stay up. In the past it was studies, in college it was major projects (and studies and exams naturally), then there were a couple of online games, and now it seems to be more of a habit and my body seems to just be engrained in it.

Lately I've been staying up till I or 2 am. I like to do that. Trouble is I have animals that wake to the sun so I need to be awake and quite active anytime from 5am onwards....which doesn't give me much time to sleep. The weird thing is, since I started to be able to stay up late again, I've been sleeping better...lol. I've been able to do this since I procured my latop. I'm giving up smoking so right now, I would love a ciggy...it's 10:35PM. hAPPY POSTING BACK AT YA.

Well I like to do it sometimes, but other times it does feel like a drag. I don't know about the staying up leading to better sleep part, at least on my end. Seems like nearly half the time the sleep isn't the best, or it feels weird. Okay okay, I will relax. I know I've been promising it for months now, but a break is coming up. I'm taking at least ONE of those days for complete rest. Probably with some safe scented candles ^^

I have changed my sleeping habits a lot in the last three months. That is because I am off of summer break and working my day job again. Combined with that,my husband finally got off of the second shift job he had always worked. We are usually in bed by ten in the evening. We have to do that, as it is not unusual to have to get up at 5:00 am. I have always been more of a morning person. I did not do the college routine. I would more likely get up early to work on something after a good night's sleep. Boring, huh? I just found that my brain did not work all that well after eleven or so. I got my early rising habit from my dad, I used to get up at 5:00 am to spend time with him before I went to school.

Ah, yes. I think you told me this in another thread or discussion Pattie. 3:30 am is your current time now? Almost like me some nights. (Like I responded to Gabs, yes I know...probably part of my current workmania, little rest problem.) And like I said earlier, I thought I had replied to your comment. Granted the threads a week old, but I know I replied to this. At least I think? *Senile moment* O_o

Both ends vary for me too Unleashed. Its either I stay up late for various reasons, or I sleep and end up with random results (sometimes its okay, a few times its a good sleep, other times is "bleh...")

Must be great Gabs. I find my sleep schedule is completely erratic nowadays. Even during some workdays. (Yes I know...this too is part of the all work, little rest, no play scenario I've created =P) This whole staying up and working hard thing must be adding up Gabs. I could have sworn I at least replied to the responses on the first page, including yours. *boggled*

Hello Progamer, I'm an early to bed, early to rise, kind of person. I'm usually asleep by 9:30pm, and up by 5:00am. Even in college, I tried to avoid the 'all-nighters'. I may not turn into a pumpkin by midnight, but my brain sure does. My body has been on pretty much the same sleep schedule since I was a wee, little kidlet. So, even if I get the same amount of sleep, by dozing off & waking up later, it seems that I wake up tired. The good thing is that Hubby & I are on pretty much the same sleep schedule. I sometimes think that it must be really difficult if spouses have different internal clocks. For example: my associate at work is a real morning person, and her husband is a night-owl. I would think that's got to be tough.

I've always been a night owl. I tend to stay up at least until midnight on work nights and later on my weekend. I don't have kids at home so I can sleep late. I'm not sure why it started. I guess, reading books or watching dvd's after there wasn't anything else on to watch, or now...getting on mylots! LOL

You and me both Esther. That was almost like looking in the post and seeing myself. I'd just add videogaming and the occasional night workout or stargaze.

Until 23:00 I have to be ready for bed and I'm not allowed to use the computer. Where I stay i live with the rules of my uncle, i know that he wants for me the best and to be fit having time to sleep and rest for tomorrow, but still it's so boring. Only in weekend I can break his rules but the rest of the week no. Before I burn the midnight lamp until 12 or 1. Now 11 pm is the holy hour for me to stop playing or what i do and sleep (because after shutting the music or game or what i was doing i don't anything else to do, except reading to make me sleep better)

I never go to sleep before midnight. I usually stay up until about 2 am. My daughter (18 mos) stays up until we go to bed, so I usually lay in bed playing on the internet on my phone until I finally fall asleep.

Well, before I got married, I used to stay up late every night until around 1-2 am. I could do that 'coz I worked from home, so I could get up late every morning and start working late he he he he he...Usually I stayed up late to watch some DVDs or TV. Now that I'm married, I only stay up late on weekends, when my hubby also stays up late. Sometimes we're both doing our own thing with our respective computers (mostly he'll be gaming), sometimes we watch some movies together at home. ;-D

I burn a lot of midnight oil for various reasons, not all of them in my control. let's see...I'm a natural night owl to begin with and have been for as long as I could remember, I have an almost 5 year old night owl that will rarely fall asleep before 11 no matter how early we wake him up, I have a 1 year old that still wakes up in the night, s/o's mom never goes to bed before 1am so even if everyone else is sleeping and I am tired before that I still can't sleep because she (and everyone else here) doesn't understand the concept of being quiet when people are sleeping. I am considering alternatives to midnight oil however. I'd like to switch to a cheaper, greener alternative source. How about some midnight ethanol? Or maybe midnight wind....err no that sounds to much like what s/o likes to do under the covers just as I get comfortable...

I'm your classic night-owl, in the truest sense of the word. My "average" turn-in time is about 3 am. I can't help it, I'm much better if I go to bed late and get up late then if I go to bed early and get up early. That "early to bed..." nonsense doesn't apply to me! I take care of my mom and she's one to go to bed early so I enjoy the peace and quiet of the late night. It's my only real "me time". I get so mad if I get bored online and all the TV channels are running stupid info-mercials or else something rerun from earlier that I already saw or heard. Annie

I usually stay up until 2 am. Sometimes I go to sleep sooner, maybe 1 am, but I currently have a cold so I've been staying up past the usually time and going to sleep around 3 am. I don't like going to sleep this late, but it's hard for me to get comfortable enough to fall asleep while I'm sick.

Interesting. For me, if I'm sick its breathing easy to get some rest. Well maybe if it was a very violent cough then I'd have trouble. Other than that, if I'm ill, all I have to do is just lay down and sleep (or get a dose of Nyquil)

I never go to sleep before midnight and since I discovered MyLot I go to sleep even later. I just can't stop writing sometimes. Then I get up very tired in the morning because I get up 7:30 each morning but I just can't make myself go to sleep before. I drink a lot of coffee usually so it helps me during the day. On weekends I go to sleep even later sometimes at 2 or 3 but then I sleep until 10 or 11 in the morning. I never take noon or afternoon naps, I just feel even more tired after it.

Mylot can get "addictive" in that fashion. :) Usually its the writing, seeing what friends are up to, or reaching some post count that gets people burning midnight oil here.

I think I've heard of that expression. I might start a discussion on it. I have noticed even in bed I end up spending minutes, even hours thinking about the day, or the next day, or some other thing. I guess having a supercharged brain does have a couple of downsides.
