Do you eat EXOTIC food?

Bugs. Worms. Roaches.
Scorpions. Starfish. Seahorses.
Rat embryos. Bear paws. Live monkey brains.
What do the above have in common?
Well, they all make me puke. But really, they are collectively known as "exotic food".
It is not that I have a weak stomach. Rather, my taste buds are not that adventurous. No hiding that I gripe from time to time about everything tasting the same and nothing tasting particularly good, still, my perceived realm of "edible" food remains relatively narrow.
It does not matter how much these exotic food items cost - the question is simply moot. Even if you give them to me free, I much prefer to thank you politely then decline.
What about you? Do you eat EXOTIC food? Do you hunger for them or scramble back 3 steps and block your nose? Do share your thoughts. :P

Cheers my friend, I was eating a lovely sandwich as I read your discussion, ewwwww! In answer to your question the most exotic food I have tasted and virtually spat out was squid, disgusting rubbery taste, and this is supposed to be a delicacy. My dad likes swordfish, but you won't get us tasting what you said at the start which I am trying not to read again as I continue with my BLT.

I would not define this creature that I ate once as exotic but I would rather called it the weirdest creature that I have ever eaten. I once join a few friends in eating some raw sea urchins and it didn't taste that bad at all. a bit salty but it was quite nice though.

Sea urchins are considered exotic in my opinion though they are more borderline - like escargot and all... I eat neither though. :P

I'd try scorpion.
But I have a policy of trying anything, once lol.
I'd try brains too, I think. Though probably not monkey brains, some other animal's brains. Monkeys are too closely related to humans for me to feel NOT like a cannible, eating their brains.
Any other bugs, they'd have to not look like bugs for me to eat most of them. Minus scorpions. And it'd probably depend on how they were prepared, lol.
I'd try dog, but I don't think I could stand eating cats...
I'd LOVE to try squid jerky, because I've always wondered what our tentacly sea friends tasted like!
I've always wanted to try shark and crocodile. Mostly because I've never eaten predator animal meat, and always heard they taste like fish or chicken.
And I've always thought that rat might taste yummy.
Lol. Maybe I'll open a strange foods restauraunt someday. I'm a fair cook, and Goddess knows...it'd get plenty of attention, being odd ^_^

Oh, I come across it sometimes. Some things really do look gross, but other things seem interesting and potentially delicious.
I suppose it depends on how open one is to try different things, I guess.
Gross doesn't equal hospital time, usually..which is why I'll try almost anything once.
Everyone's just got their limits.

You are definitely adventurous!
Squid is a very common seafood over here but you know, I have been reading recent reports that squids are suspected to have intelligence akin to humans. I can't really recall if it is intelligence or consciousness or pain or what, but I do remember that it just make them like human.
Shark tastes pretty good and I've already tried crocodile as part of some herbal tonics... I wouldn't want to eat rats though...
Lots of strange food restaurants in e.g. China. :P

Those food sound like they can be found in 'Fear Factor'.
Durians and Century Eggs appeared in 'Fear Factor' before too. LOL I guess they are considered Exotic food to the Caucasians though they are considered as delicacy (especially Durian) to me. =D
As for those food u mentioned (ie. Roaches, bugs and etc), I will never eat them. Likewise, I do not have an adventurous taste bud. I do not even dare to eat Sashimi. This shows how unadventurous I am. =P

Hi Lord,
Well Im no Andrew Zimmerman! Hes on the Food Network and he travels all over the world telling us how great all this exotic food is. I mean really now, Im sure some things just dont taste that good, but he will tell you it ALL tastes good. Ive seen him eat all sorts of bugs, covered in something or not, worms, bat spit soup, or was it vomit soup. LOL Hes eaten the gonads from several animals, scorpions and all kinds of things I cant even think of.
I would be the person stepping back and curling my nose or covering my mouth to keep from puking! The most exotic thing I have ever put in my mouth was some Frogs Legs, and they DID taste like chicken! lol

Oh yes, I have tried froggies on several occasions. I don't particularly think they taste great.
Hmm.. they are considered a semi-delicacy here - not that I think about it, it's actually quite gross to eat them. Geez, why did I ever eat them? :P

Well I only tasted them, they were ok but not something that I could stomach eating a lot of. As I was chewing I just thought of the cute little froggies I used to play with as a kid! LOL

Nope, I'm not a risk-taker when it comes to trying new foods; especially if the food was something I would have killed in my kitchen when it was alive. :-) I suppose I would try a chocolate-covered ant or grasshopper if I was offered one, but I'd be pretty surprised if I actually liked it. As for the other things on your list, no thanks!

I have to agree with you on this one..lol
There is no way that I would be able to eat any of the "exotic foods" that you have listed..
Although, I do enjoy quite a variety of foods...seafoods and wild turkey, deer, squirrel and rabbit...
I have a friend who lives in Australia..she states that kangaroo is delicious...since the only kangaroos here in the US are in zoos...I guess that I will have to take her word for it...I must admit that when she said that though, I would never have thought about eating one...it is amazing to me the different foods that are acceptable in one culture would be strictly taboo in another though!

Bear's paws? I would sit there wondering what awful thing they did with the rest of the bear. Live things, no. Those I would definitely say "No, thank you!" or maybe even "No!" without the thank you. I'm adventurous enough to try unusual things, but fancy does not necessarily mean good, and I sure wouldn't want to eat endangered species or anything like that. On the other hand, quite a few people would consider the Offal that I regard as normal food to be somewhat exotic. I like organ meats, like liver and hearts and chicken gizzards, for instance. My favorite meats include beef tongue and oxtails. That grosses a few people out.

If I remember correctly, they just chopped off the paws and leave the rest to rot. The paws are then served cold.

Oh gosh I have never eaten any of these foods before and I think they would probably make me want to throw up. I have seen some stuff in television what people eat which to me is strange. However if I was starving I would eat anything, gag or not, it is going down. LOL

there is a restaurant here in Makati, where they serve exotic foods like, lizards, frogs, locusts, beetles, I had a chance to taste all of it. The frog is my favorite, tastes much like chicken. One factor in liking such food is the way it is cooked. I have tasted frog before but cooked differently and I didn't like it.

As for those you mentioned above, no thank you! Only if you PAID ME would I eat that stuff and it would have to be a pretty good sum of money (I'd never make it on Fear Factor LOL!).
I do have people that makes faces at me when I eat smoked salmon, mussels, and escargot. But that's as far as I will go.

I have been thinking about eating such yucky things (or worse) for money too and somehow, I think I will still decline for a million bucks. :PP

Yikes, I have never tried eating rats and things like that, I dont have the appetite to that and I have no plans what so ever.
Im a filipino I eat normal things around here but maybe some of these normal food would be exotic on your part. There are many to mention and I can name one like the balut. Have you heard of it, its a matured but not fully developed duck egg, its a sure hit in our country and I eat it, maybe this kind of food would sound exotic for you.LOL
Heres the picture for our reference.

AHHHH! Gag. Sick. Rat embryos? You can't be serious. Monkey brains? Monkeys are practically people. That cannabilism. SICK! Oh god. People don't really eat that stuff do they? I can't even look at the picture that you posted because I'm afraid of what it might be.

That's why the term is a glorified "exotic".
The picture is that of slaughtered pigs waiting to be marinated or barbecued. They are not really "exotic" but that way the picture was taken and the way they are hanging often made me puke too.
