I suggest you wash your hands before rubbing your eyes. I guess I was in a hurry to get the sauce on and yes I rubbed my eyes. I rinsed them with cold water but they are still burning. Geez I think Ive learned the hard way about onions. Has this ever happened to you? If so what did you do?

Hubby dont let me have a knife in my hand too often, it could be dangerous. lol He usually cuts up the onion, and I recall him doing something like that on a few ocassions.
I sure hope your eyes are ok now. I know they make my burn terribly without rubbing them. lol
I poked my fork into the peppercini bottle tonight and juice squirted up, and if it hadn't been for my glasses I'm most positive it would have went right into my eye. Saved by the eye glasses! LOL

Well maybe you can make a mental note to wear them when your cutting onions! You won't be so incline to wipe your eyes with your glasses on!

I have never rubbed my eyes while cutting an onion. Some of the onions I have cut up make my eyes water like crazy just cutting them. That is bad enough. I can't even imagine how bad it much hurt to get the junk in your eyes. I hope the burning goes away soon.

I usually try to rinse them with cold water. It doesn't work immediately but it does after a little while. I try to wash my onions in water before peeling them and that helps.

When cutting up an onion, rinse the onion in cold tap water before you cut them so that they would prevent your eyes from tearing. I learn this trick from somebody close to me and it works!!

The only thing you can do. Wash them with cool water or use eye drops like visine. And learn your lesson from this and make sure you wash your hands after cutting onions.lol
Also the trick to keep your eyes from burning so much is keep the onions in your fridge. They seem to burn your eyes less if they are cold. Or run them under cold water before peeling them. I used to wear contact lenses so the onions didn't burn my eyes. But now that I just wear glasses they burn. I try to get my hubby to cut up the onions, if he's home, when I need them.

I always rub my eyes or itch my face with the back of my hand when working with food. If you get stuff in them, rinse it out with room temperature water, you eyes are sensitive and cold and hot water hurts the outer protective layer.

OH Bless your heart. I bet that hurt. I always wash my hands after cutting up an onion. I can only imagine how that felt. Bet you wont make that mistake again though.

I am sorry this has happened to you. In the future, here are three things I suggest to protect yourself from those mean onions. hehehe
1. When cutting an onion, do not bend over the onion. Pull your face back so your face is not directly over the onion. This will help a lot with onions that are strong smelling.
2. When you are done working with the onions, wash your hands with a mild soap.
3. Keep your hands away from your face at all costs. If you have an itch, have someone else scratch it.
I hope in the future you never have to go through this experience again.

I've never done that. I always make it a point to wash my hands well after I cut onions. No matter how urgent it is that I stir them into the pan or whatever... I'd rather have to start the dish all over again than accidentally rub my eyes or touch my son without washing my hands after cutting onions (or hot peppers).

Hi TerryZ! That have not happened to me before and i guess, that is pretty awful for the eyes. But whenever i cut onions, i usually get teary eyed. That is why my husband joke a lot about it that the only reason why i cry all this time we're married is because of the onions. haha.. Take care and have a nice day.
